Highlighting the top-10 edge defenders expected to enter free agency | NFL Analysis | Pro Football Focus

8. Preston Smith
Smith is an under-the-radar free agent this offseason that has increased his performance throughout his career. This past season, his 76.9 overall grade was a career-high, and he increased his pressure totals each of the last two seasons to 53 in 2018, tied for 24th among 109 edge defenders that logged 250 or more snaps this season. He’s also proven his durability by playing over 2,300 snaps over the last three seasons and 834 this past year. Smith is a name to watch as a potentially sneaky signing that could offer high-level production and a high return on investment.

Highlighting the top-10 safeties expected to enter free agency | NFL Analysis | Pro Football Focus

3. Adrian Amos Jr.
On an unquestionably elite Chicago Bears defense, Amos Jr. has been a stalwart. After allowing passer ratings when targeted of 115 or higher in his first two years, Amos Jr. has brought that mark down around 80 for the past two seasons and has subsequently become a top cover safety. And with Amos being just 25 years old coming off his rookie contract, suitors will be lined up for a chance to add him.

7. Tre Boston
Boston is likely the most underrated safety on this list. He’s yet to earn a grade below 70.0 in his five seasons with three teams. And the longest pass he gave up all year was 22 yards — which is quite impressive given how often safeties are burned deep.

9. Eric Reid
The former first-round pick didn’t have an exceptional year, allowing a career-high 14.6 yards per completion, but it was one that fit the mold of his solid career. Reid has been a consistent force in his six seasons, allowing passer ratings when targeted less than 100.0 in four of them and reception rates below 70 percent in six of them.

I highly doubt that BQ has any chance of signing FA DE Trey Flowers with limited money available and that includes even if Lang is cut and GQ retires.

If Flowers wants to get paid and go to a Contender then it should be to the Colts, imo. The Jets are just as much of a longshot at contending as we are but if Flowers is looking at strictly money then the Jets and Raiders might be in play.

Quandre Diggs asks Jordan Hicks to join Lions

Hicks has not been the same player that was the best coverage linebacker in 2016, but he was not bad either last season. During 2018, Hicks has 91 tackles, three sacks, five pass deflections, a fumble recovery and six quarterback hits.

Hicks has battled numerous injuries throughout his four years in the NFL, from a torn pectoral muscle to a ruptured Achilles to am injured calf that caused him to miss four games this year. He has missed a total of 19 games in his four seasons.

In his first 24 career games, Hicks had 100 career tackles with 14 pass deflections, seven interceptions, four fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. He's just the fifth player in NFL history to put up those numbers through the first two years of his career and the first linebacker to accomplish the feat.

In Hicks' only full season (2016), he finished with 86 tackles, five interceptions, 11 pass deflections as opposing quarterbacks had just a 53.7 passer rating when the ball was thrown in this direction.

Over the last two years, those injuries have taken a toll on Hicks. He had 28 tackles and a fumble recovery in 2017 before rupturing his Achilles as opposing quarterbacks had a 115.1 passer rating when targeting him. This season, they have a 112.3 passer rating.

BB_72; you can click on the statistics in that link. If he can be had on the cheap similar to C. jones then he might be worth the risk. JRM is just as risky and hasn't showed the ability to produce in coverage whereas Hicks has in the past.

JRM will be cut before the reg season begins anyway if not prior to new league year so long as he's heeled from injury.

2019 Free Agency Profile: Kareem Jackson | NFL Analysis | Pro Football Focus

Kareem Jackson finished the 2018 season with an overall grade of 85.7, ranking fifth out of 131 cornerbacks. As he approaches his 31st birthday, Jackson still has plenty left in the tank. As good as he is in coverage, he’s probably better in run support, as his 91.1 run-defense grade ranked second among cornerbacks this past season. Jackson is a do-it-all corner who isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and get to work.

Jackson finished this past season with a coverage grade of 80.5, ranking 14th among cornerbacks. He allowed a passer rating of 75.2 into his coverage, ranking 16th. However, where Jackson shines most is against the run, as he recorded 20 run stops on 327 run-defense snaps last season, good for the third-best run-stop percentage (6.1%) among cornerbacks. Wherever Jackson ends up, he’ll make an immediate impact as one of the most complete corners in the game.

^^^^^

If BQ could get K. Jackson for 5-7M per yr avg on a 3 yr contract that could be wiped out of guaranteed money in 2 yrs I could live with that.

I still want BQ to draft a #2CB that can start by years end and draft another CB on day 3 that can compete for outside CB or slot CB duties.

Detroit Lions re-sign LB Steve Longa, DE Mitchell Loewen

Lions re-signed exclusive rights free agents DE Mitchell Loewen and LB Steve Longa.

They'll get minimum salaries if they make the 2019 roster. Loewen appeared in one game for the Saints last season, then was cut in late December and claimed off waivers by the Lions. Longa made nine special teams tackles in 2017.

I'm looking over the list of FA for S. any thoughts on FS Eric Reid to come in as a backup for Tracy Walker. He'll probably want a chance to start but he received slightly above what Don Juan was getting when he was here.

Eric Reid Contract Details, Salary Cap Charges, Bonus Money, and Contract History | Over The Cap

Panthers re-signed S Eric Reid to a three-year, $22 million contract.
Obviously blackballed last offseason, Reid lingered on the open market until September. He almost immediately became an every-down player for the Panthers upon making his Carolina debut in Week 5, continuing his solid, if unspectacular, play from his 49ers days. Still only 27, Reid is a big hitter with positional versatility. He should remain a starter for several more seasons.

I can't ever get the correct spelling of the last name between those two so Bob Quinn needs to go.

This way I won't be confused.
It's a simple solution, to a complex issue.

The sooner we start the search for the next Jim, the better.

Players who fit what Bob Quinn wants in a playmaker

At Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn’s end-of-season press conference, he mentioned the need to add playmakers to the roster.

“I think this year when you look back at the stats and how our defense played, we didn’t really turn the ball over as much as we would’ve liked,” Quinn responded. “So, that is something that’s a combination of players and putting them in the right positions. When we’re going through the evaluation process, (we’re) making sure we’re taking a close look at game-changing plays that the guys we’re looking at in free agency and the draft.

“I think that’s something that’s crucial, you know third downs, red area, are two really critical areas. So, we kinda break down defensive players, by kinda area of the field as well, and see how they do on third downs, see how they do in crucial situations. See how they do in the red area, because (that’s) the bottom line for a defense in the NFL. I’m ok with giving up 500-yards a game, as long as we don’t give up any points. So, ultimately, it comes down to scoring, so we just want more players to take the ball away.”

Players who fit what Bob Quinn wants in a playmaker

While red zone success is subjective for a defender, turnovers are easier to track and among the upcoming potential free agents, there is one defender at a position of need who ranked near the top of the 2018 turnovers list: cornerback Steven Nelson.

Nelson is a balanced defender who can cover as well as stop the run and last year he had the most interceptions of the potential available free agents (4) and an impressive 15 pass breakups.

At only 26 years of age, and with an estimated Spotrac Market Share of a $9.6 million annual salary over five years, don’t be surprised if Nelson is the Lions’ top target when free agency opens in March.
