Thinking of all the parents who died with their children on Sunday in that helicopter crash. Wonder if they were all able to get a final word in with their little girls or if it happened so suddenly where they didn't have a chance to say anything
This is the part of the tragedy that breaks my heart. I almost hope they didn't as that would mean it happened suddenly and no one knew what was coming.

So how long do we only talk about Kobe? How long before the sports sites talk about actual basketball again?
You can talk about whatever you want, this is a public forum.

But, you'd probably get a lackluster response.

I'm hoping this changes by Sunday, but, right now, I don't even give a shit about the Superbowl.

I wasn't a fan of Kobe the player, for obvious Clipper-related reasons.

I'm sad for him, his family and the families of the other folks that lost their lives.

It took me a minute to realize why this event has me so shook.

It's not because I was a Kobe-stan, a Laker fanatic..

But, because I am a parent , with a daughter the same age as Gigi, that has been reminded of my mortality.

If it happened to him, it can happen to anyone.

Very well put Mecca. As a parent myself after I heard the news I thought of my sons. They're now in their 20's but this tradegy made me appreciate what I have even more.

I get wanting to keep talking about if that's what you choose, but you (nor any of us here) are not any of them so kind of irrelevant. So to compare this him losing his spouse was absurd.
I can't speak for anyone else because I have never been emotionally invested in any sports team like some Lakers fans.

Kobe was their religion.

This situation makes me incredibly sad. Feels like I knew him...

Exactly.

My 13 year old is totally taking advantage of the situation and has slept in my room the last 2 days " so that I won't feel sad".

Totally has nothing to do with the fact that the TV in my room doesn't require a code to rent movies.

Terminator Dark Fate, Zombieland double tap. Joker, Harriett, 21 bridges...

My husband is gonna be mad as shit when he sees that bill.....lol

If it happened to him, it can happen to anyone.

It does happen to people. Every single day.

I guess I just don't get why his death is getting people so shook given that you didn't know him personally.

I get why Shaq or Phil or other people that knew are upset.

It's sad that he died. It's sad that his daughter died. I just don't get why people seem obsessed with it.

But I guess I'm just a heartless monster.

It is sad, no doubt. Very sad....but guessing you wouldn't compare this to losing your own spouse (or kid).

I do get this line of thinking....I really do. But I get what flyerhawk is talking about as well. I certainly know who Kobe is, but I don't know him personally. I am just as sad about the others who lost their lives on this flight. No more sad to me than had it been any random parent and his/her child.

But I do get this would be different for a Laker fan than a random NBA fan. And also that people are free to look at this however they choose.

Geez....dramatic much?

I never said, nor implied, anything remotely close to that.

My guess is, it's the same reason people lose their shit over actors, actresses, musicians.

Motherfuckers still aren't over Elvis, Michael Jackson, John Lennon and Tupac.

Understanding is not a requirement for acceptance.

They feel that way, the why is inconsequential.

Sorry. I wasn't suggesting that you were saying that.

I've just never understand why people are so invested in celebrities.

I don't begrudge anyone their right to be as upset about this as they want.

I just get annoyed when I go to the Athletic or ESPN or CBS Sports and it is wall to wall Kobe articles.

You aren't (or maybe I am too) because I totally understand that line of thinking. My thought is if a random person had died Kobe doesn't give it a second thought if he were informed. Happens every day.

That said, I get why it is the news story that it is.

Agree...while I agree with you on how you look at this, as I said earlier, cannot tell other people how to feel about it. But doesn't make you a bad person to ask why.

All true.

Dude, I went on a totally self imposed news, TV, internet, radio BLACKOUT on several occasions.

Trayvon Martin, Laci Peterson, Casey Anthony acquittal, Trump winning the election...

Didn't know any of those people either. I was still incredibly sad, and disgusted, for those who lost their lives and it took me many moons to move past it.

My empathy is not exclusively reserved for people I know.

Kobe was an enigma.

So, I can't refute any of this.

But, there are lots of celebrities out there that actually give a shit about the common folks.

Shaq has paid for many a funeral, bought cars, homes and created ways for people to become self sufficient.

Lots of others do it too and want to remain anonymous.

Kobe might not have been one of them. But, there are others that care.
