What else are the Kings gonna use the cap space on for this year and next? Chances of getting one or two top FA's will be at about 0% and Vlade doesn't seem to get how to use it to gain assets like the Nets did. Getting a tough defender like Smart who could play some 3 being able to defend SF's will help add toughness to the team. They'll need good role players around if one or two of their young players turn into all stars/superstars and get them back to the playoffs, and Smart is a good role player who's only 24 years old.

i get what you are saying---- and i do suppose it is contingent on him accepting that same offer from the Lakers.

As far as I know the Lakers never made him an offer. The did the QO that they had to do to maintain their rights to him. But that was it.

Id think staying at home and playing with LeBron would be a draw more so than a hindrance in that negotiation though.

There was no negotiation. He wasn't part of the future. He asked for and was granted a release making him a UFA.
