How many teams do you think would be up for a stand-alone championship game this year? The top 3, that's it. Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson. Don't even start with UCF.

Go ahead and show me a year where there were 5 deserving teams. I'm going to guess if that's the case, the #1 is far above the other 4.

The problem is, deciding who "deserves" to be in is opinion based.

Washington won the PAC-12. Because the PAC is considered a "weak conference" or having a "down year" and Washington lost 3 games, many have the opinion that they don't deserve to be in the playoff.

However, there are also many who have the opinion that because they are a conference champion, they should be in. In an 8 team playoff they would be.

Additionally, so what if teams get in that some feel don't "deserve it"? If they truly don't deserve to be there, it will be proven on the football field by players rather than in a board room by people in suits.

And why not "start with UCF"? They have been unbeaten for 2 straight years and beat #7 ranked Auburn in the Peach Bowl last year.

Finally, an 8 team playoff means more football and more football is a good thing.

Brad Stevens?
Someone above made the exact same post, and my reply was: he's on the right track but hasn't won anything yet

The rule seems to be Pitino or Donovan or Hoiberg and the exception Brown

...and they're done by 12/15, other than the FCS championship game (1/5). They sacrifice regular season games to start the playoffs earlier. All 3 are down to their final 4 already.

You sure about that? Just looked at NDSU's schedule and they played an 11 game regular season and have played 2 playoff games so far.

If they make it to the championship game, they will have played 15 games. Teams that make it to the NCG will have played 14. So the lower division schools sacrifice 1 regular season game and with their playoff, only end up playing 1 more game and that's only if they make it to the finals.

I mean if Washington had 1 loss maybe theyd have an argument- but if Washington had 2 they wouldnt have a prayer and to think they even deserve a 2nd thought with 3 losses is ludicrous.

What is the line on OSU/Wash right now? and OSU is 6th in the final rankings.

OSU is a 4 point favorite over Washington

and the Bucks would have been at least a 7-8 pt dog against Bama...maybe more....

though OSU would have been slightly favored against OKlahoma in a hypothetical matchup.

@DJ

how much we betting on Washington OSU?

I remember when people on here ripped the Pistons for the BG trade saying they'd be stuck as a 7-8 seed with no way to get better than that.....

LMAO.

LMAO.

Do you have quotes to back this up or are you making shit up again?

I'm pretty sure people we're using that as their ceiling for last season after making that trade.

Pistons were 22-26, 9th in the east, and without one of their best players when trading for Griffin

Some quotes from the BG trade.

He's not.

Next season......when Jackson and BG are both on the bench for 15-25 games, they will regret it.

The same way he and Jordan played and that worked out fine. Drummond is essentially the same player as Jordan. Not quite the same, but close enough to where it won't be a problem. Detroit's real issue is getting some starting PG not named Reggie Jackson

They want/need a star. They have a new building so they need to sell tickets and haven't been relevant in quite some time. They damn sure weren't getting one in free agency so this is their best shot at one. And they really didn't give up much for him. Bradley was gonna hit free agency anyway. Harris is good, but just a starter. The pick can have some value but its likely in the teens. That's a fair price for guy with Griffin's resume and potential. Yes, they eat his big salary (fwiw, I said last summer no team should give him a big number for that many years due to his injury history), but its a worthwhile gamble for them. IF Griffin is healthy, they are a better team. Now they still aren't championship caliber, but for a team that's languished in obscurity for years, perennially being in the playoffs is an accomplishment and they can build from there down the road. That's their thinking.

There is no down the road though.

This is the same copout BS move that poorly run franchises always make. They just maxed themselves out as a 45-50 win team with no chance of being a legitimate contender in the current build cycle.

Granted, it was unlikely they would have been anyway, but still. Teams who build for a mediocre playoff squad are doing it wrong, IMO. I don't currently see a pathway for this group to be more than that.

More the Pistons will be stuck as a 7-8 seed with Blake quotes from the NBA board.....

Blake isn't a game changer, but if he can stay healthy, he does make them better. Unfortunately for them, not contender level better, but 5-6 in the East better.

I agree that it seems more business than basketball. From a basketball perspective, I can only assume they are thinking they can use Blake to maybe attract another really good player to help push them closer.

Most people feel it was an overall win for the Clips. Time will tell from the Pistons side.

Yeah, that's why I said time will tell. Blake hasn't made an all-star game in 3 years (which is again due to injury mostly) and he'll need to regain that superstar form for this to work out for the Pistons.

@flyerhawk was the only real negative one outside of some Pistons fans but still didn't see a single post where anyone said they would be stuck as a 7-8 seed. If you're going to make ridiculous claims like that, please bring actual quotes.

I cannot for the life of me understand why the Pistons made this trade. It makes zero sense. The Pistons are not measurably better now with Griffin but they now have a huge contract and lost a bunch of assets.

There are no good basketball reasons for the Pistons to make this trade.

Congrats on playing the semantics game. The one commonality in all of the quotes you provided is that most thought trading for Blake wouldn't get them over the hump. Your point of them being a 5-6 seed vs. a 7-8 seed doesn't change that consensus.

BG is a very talented player. But he gets paid a ton of money and he never stays healthy.

The Pistons can be a playoff team but their ceiling is probably a 1st round exist.

Nobody said it would make them title contenders but i didn't see anyone say they would be stuck as a 7 or 8 seed either
