According to Baseball America, the Giants have signed 30 of the 40 players they drafted in 2017. That includes 9 of the 10 top picks and 18 of the top 20 (they've only signed 4 of the top 10 picks). Out of the 16 position players, 14 have signed. That means 16 of the 24 pitchers have been signed.

I forgot to post it, but the Giants have signed 8th rounder John Gavin. Not sure what the bonus is, but he posted a picture of him signing his contract so it's basically official

So far: $101,600 above slot

And right on cue, his bonus is announced.

John Gavin signs for $125,000, $29,200 under the slot.

Looks like have their top 19 picks signed, 27 of their first 28 (20th rounder Keaton Winn unsigned). Good stuff.

So that puts the Giants $92,800 over their allotted slot bonus for the first 10 rounds. Reminder, they can go $318,180 over the slot, so the Giants have $225,380 to spend in rounds 11-40 if they want to exceed any bonuses over $125,000, which is a lot of extra. Looks like they signed Totsado to a $175,000 deal, so they have $175,380 to spend on these remaining players:

20. (606) Keaton Winn - RHP (over 50% likely, with overslot, remote without)
29. (876) Frank Rubio - RHP (50/50)
30. (906) Sean Watkins - CF (likely)
32. (966) Blake Rivera - RHP (50/50, with overslot, remote without)
33. (996) Peyton Maddox - C (likely)
34. (1026) Connor Nurse - RHP (remote)
38. (1146) Antonio Saldana - LHP (remote)
39. (1176) Brad Dobzanski - RHP (remote)
40. (1206) Liam Jenkins - RHP (likely)

Pretty surprised the Giants got this one done:

Giants signed 34th rounder Connor Nurse to a $250,000 bonus. Still leaves them a little bit of room, about $50K.

Nurse is a huge 6'6" right hander. Only 17 (turns 18 July 31st). Throws 92 right now, many expect some growth. Really nice get.

So the highest non-sign is #20?

Not bad at all. AND they pulled some of their reach picks.

I've noticed that 4 of the draft picks have not been assigned to a team. Has anyone heard the status (injury, rest?) of the following:
Matt Brown
Connor Nurse
Doug Still
Brac Warren

And Frankie Tostado.

I can say for certain that Tostado has undergone Tommy John and will be out until next year.

Still, Brown and Warren signed well ahead of the deadline, so I'm guessing they're all injured somehow. Nurse signed very late, so maybe there is still some hurdles he needs to pass. Unfortunately, that's all the information I can find.

If Brown, Tostada, Still and Warren are all hurt, maybe Nurse is helping them out?

I was aware of Tostado's surgery, which is why I didn't include him. I have noticed that the Giants will sometimes sign a couple of the low end draft picks merely in case of a roster emergency (for example, they signed a guy named Jameson Hennings a few years ago and released him, I think, two years later but he did not appear in any games with any farm team) but a couple of these pitchers were taken pretty early in the draft so I assumed that they were injured but hadn't heard anything.

In light of the fact that the 2022 draft will be held in less than two weeks, I thought I'd look back at the 2017 draft, since it has been 5 years ago. This was done by a different regime so its not a good standard of measurement of how the current FO drafts. Their first draft is still too early to make a definitive call on, especially with the 2020 disruption.

There is still some room for this draft to look better, but its not looking too good so far. Here is where the picks are currently:
1. Heliot Ramos - Sacramento, with very brief cups of coffee (more like espresso shots) with SF. AAA numbers are concerning but he is still young.
2. Jacob Gonzalez - Finally hitting well with the Pirates class A affiliates (drafted by them in last year's minor league Rule 5 draft, after not hitting after his debut year)
3. Seth Corry - Really starting to look like a bust. Down for the year with an injury after struggling in the early going with San Jose
4. Garrett Cave - out of baseball since 2019
5. Jason Bahr - Pitching in relief for the Rangers' AAA affiliate. Has struggled there these past two years.
6. Bryce Johnson - Hit okay last year in AAA and started off well there this year but has faded badly with the bat.
7. Logan Harasta - out of baseball since 2019
8. John Gavin - Injuries have derailed his career and he pitched poorly in 2019 in high A ball. He started this year with the ACL, made one appearance with San Jose and just got promoted to Eugene. He is a 26 year old reliever in high A ball right now.
9. Aaron Phillips - out of baseball since 2021
10. Rob Calabrese - out of baseball since 2018
11. Doug Still - retired in 2020
12. Aaron Bond - out of baseball since 2019
13. Tyler Schimpf - released from Richmond a month ago
14. Michael Sexton - out of baseball since 2018
15. Orlando Garcia - out of baseball since 2019
16. John Russell - mediocre reliever with Richmond. Hasn't had a good season since 2018.
17. Brac Warren - out of baseball since 2019
18. Chris Corbett - out of baseball since 2019
19. Frankie Tostado - hitting well with Richmond (.830 OPS) but this is his 2nd year there and plays mainly 1st base.
20. Keaton Winn - did not sign (but did sign in 2018 with the Giants)
21. Logan Baldwin - out of baseball since 2019
22. Greg Jacknewitz - out of baseball since 2018
23. Shane Matheny - suddenly hitting well with Richmond (.914) but also his 2nd year there. Career OPS, with 2022 included, is .688. Does play multiple infield positions. Probably why he's still around under the current regime.
24. Nico Giarratano - released by the Giants' org during 2019. Signed by the A's but never played a game. Went to Mexico, didn't play and retired.
25. Franklin Van Gurp - 2nd best name in draft. Out of baseball since 2021 (after stints with Padres and Mariners' orgs).
26. Kyle McPherson - out of baseball since 2019
27. Matt Brown - out of baseball since 2018
28. Peter Lanoo - out of baseball since 2019
29. Frank Rubio - released from Richmond a month ago
30. Sean Watkins - did not sign
31. Keenan Bartlett - out of baseball since 2018
32. Blake Rivera - did not sign (but did sign in 2018 with the Giants)
33. Peyton Maddux - did not sign
34. Connor Nurse - on injured list with ACL team. Likely out for the season.
35. Dalton Combs - out of baseball since 2019
36. Joey Marciano - pitching well with Sacramento (2.48 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, probably best reliever on the club). He retired half way through 2019, decided to return in 2021 and could possibly buck the odds and play in the big leagues! At 27 years old, a bit old for prospect status but still a cool story so far.
37. Andy Rohloff - out of baseball since 2019
38. Antonio Saldana - did not sign
39. Brad Dobzanski - did not sign
40. Liam Jenkins - did not sign

Summary stats:

Total picks - 40
Total picks signed - 33
Total picks still playing - 13 (including Schimpf and Rubio since they pitched in 2022 but are currently unemployed)
Total picks still in Giants' org - 9 (not including Schimpf and Rubio)
Total picks to appear in big leagues - 1

Of the 13 players still active, there are not many that seem to have a chance to play at all in the big leagues. I'll rate below those from most to least likely:
1. Ramos. Already played a few games. Still a stud but has some concerns with his hitting with Sacramento.
2. Marciano. A 36th round pick in the 2nd slot is an indicator of the quality of this draft but its also a testament to this player's endurance. He could get skipped over but I have to think that if he continues to pitch well, he will force at least a cup of coffee appearance before getting dfa'd.
3. Johnson - He is more of a glove first outfielder with some speed. The fact that he's played at AAA shows that he will be considered.
4. Bahr - A turnaround in numbers at AAA will get him to the big leagues. The question is, will he be able to turn it around?
5. Matheny. His versatility and the ability to hit with Richmond will at least get him a chance somewhere in AAA next year (even with another org) but if he struggles, his career could well be over in 2023.
6. Tostado. His numbers, while good for Richmond, are a bit low for a 1st baseman only type (who plays a little left field). Still may be able to force a brief appearance if he continues to improve.
7. Gavin. He's a bit old for a guy still stuck in high A ball but has some pedigree from the draft and pitching well so far in relief this year. Could possibly make it if he continues to pitch well as he moves up.
8. Russell. I don't know what his stuff looks like but it must be intriguing considering he's lasted this long. Still a long shot to make the big leagues.
9. Gonzalez. His numbers with the Pirates, and the fact its with the Pirates, give him a chance to climb the org ladder and possibly make the big league club there. Still, he is hitting at a level where he is a bit old. He'll need to hit in AA to have a chance.
10. Corry. His career is on life support. He probably gets one more chance when he gets healthy and if he struggles, he will probably get a quick release.
11. Nurse. Got a bump to high A ball last year, despite poor numbers, and struggled. Injury this year does not help. Wouldn't be surprised to see him released or retired at the end of the year.
12. Rubio. He's out of organized baseball and likely done.
13. Schimpf. He's out of organized baseball and likely done.

I think it should be mentioned that Van Gurp was traded one-up for Dickerson. So that pick, I think, can be considered a successful pick.
