I really don't think so. They have Jarry is the system too, which would make losing him a bit simpler, but Murray is the future in goal, so I doubt they move him. There were rumblings last week about Calgary calling, but being told no pretty quick.

Every team has their untouchables. It makes sense that Pittsburgh doesn't want to trade Murray. However, I think Fleury has played very well the past two seasons. Pittsburgh really needs help on defense. The only possible playoff team that might need a defenseman more is Detroit.

I never thought they'd be this desperate for defensemen based on how they've drafted of late. I mean, they're really not in an awful place. The top four of Letang-Maatta, Dumolin-Daley is fine, and if you wanna go based on top four most talented put Pouliot instead of Daley. Really right now, Pittsburgh's cupboards are bare so all prospects are pretty much untouchable. Murray and Sprong at least.

Pittsburgh had like 6 really good prospects on defense, but have traded three of them the past couple of years. They got Dumolin from Carolina. I remember at last years draft Darren Dreger said Pittsburgh was trying to get a 1st round pick. It obviously didn't happen. The Pens either weren't willing to give up the asking price or didn't have it to give up.

Garth has been smart up to this point in terms of not trading away the farm system. I hope that continues.

Detroit needs scoring way more than it needs defence.

What's interesting is the ones they moved didn't necessarily pan out. So far at least.

I don't think so. They need the guys they have to play like their capable of. Especially Nyqvist. Kronwall will make a difference, but they need another defenseman like him.
They're 11th in GA/G, 22nd in GF/G. If they only have the luxury of acquiring one rental piece, it should be a goalscorer.

Yeah you can have Harrington back.
Yeah, so far the guys traded on defense are Harrington, Despres and Morrow, and they kept Maatta, Dumolin, and Pouliot. I don't think everything can be written in stone, but I think so far I'm happy with who was kept and who was dealt (outside of the obviously shortsighted Lovejoy-Despres swap). Even the forwards traded in rental deals haven't been big factors anywhere, save Kapanen who's yet to make NHL impact, it's the picks that have hurt. That damn Doug Murray deal is haunting. Shero had some really great trades, but he got trade happy with Murray, Iginla, Morrow deals.

What's funny is a 1st, two 2nd's, a 3rd and 3 prospects probably could've landed Pittsburgh any of the stars that have moved in their primes in the past few years instead of 2 months each of Iginla, Morrow and Douglas Murray.

The New York Rangers know they shouldn't be in the high-rent(al) district at this trade deadline, but I'll be curious to see if they can resist the temptation.

Especially where it might concern Eric Staal.

The Rangers haven't had a first-round pick since 2012 and they don't have one this year either. Anthony Duclair, a third-round pick who developed like a first-rounder, was sacrificed‎ last year to get Keith Yandle, who is now an expiring contract who can't/won't be re-signed in New York.

Tuesday night's poor effort against New Jersey notwithstanding, the Rangers have played well enough over the last couple of months to not want to shop Yandle in the rental market in an effort to recoup some future considerations. They surely must think they still have a shot; that contending in the East is something they can still see if they squint a bit and don't look too closely in Washington's direction.

But the Rangers also haven’t played so well as to think they're just one notable player away to continue throwing caution to the wind and loading up the mortgage even more. Their current deadline philosophy calls for more cautious spending of lower-level future assets than first-rounders or blue-chip prospects. Or maybe they would consider moving a younger roster player. That is, if they're to add a piece at the deadline‎ - the operative word being if.

But you know how it is when you're in debt. The temptation is always there to go a little deeper. You know, in for a dime, in for a dollar.

And Eric Staal ‎may represent a unique opportunity.

But the Rangers do know two things: 1) Eric Staal could help them in their bid not only this season but for the next few years were he to sign there as a free agent, and, 2) they have on their roster a defenceman who goes by the name of Marc Staal.

Eric has enjoyed playing alongside brother Jordan in Carolina. One would have to presume he ‎would feel the same way about playing with other brother Marc. Perhaps that gives the Rangers an advantage no other NHL team has.

Now, the Rangers still can't afford to be cavalier about flushing draft picks and/or prospects for a thirtysomething forward. But what if Eric Staal weren't a rental? What if his Brotherly Love cap hit-discount, in a place like New York, was deep enough for the Rangers to consider him a longer-term option and not just a one-and-done rental?

I want the Pens to stand pat at the deadline. It'd be nice to find someone to step in for Lovejoy, but we're also talking about the defenseman who's going to get the fewest minutes on the team, and I think Ian Cole can fill that role just fine.

I will disconnect Jimmy R's phones if I have to.
