Not much action on day-one for the Giants, first Giants pick is number 59 overall.

I haven't prepped all that much, but hey I'm going to take a shot at the dark here and try to narrow down who they'll look at with the 59th pick.

Bobby Dalbec 6'4" 220 lbs. 3B/RHP Bats-R
-Big time power bat
-Strong arm, but limited defensively. Probably won't last at the position
-Down year in Junior season at Arizona, might be tempted to go back to school and re-gain some draft stock. Was talked about as a a 1st-round talent going into this season
-Scouts think could be converted to a pitcher

Gio Brusa 6'3" 220 lbs. OF Bats-Switch
-Power, power, power
-Athletic enough to play RF with a good arm
-Injuries have plagued him, with a left-shoulder injury, a right elbow, and a right-arm on his list
-Is a senior, so there's pressure on him to sign and the Giants could save money some money for later in the draft

Nick Solak 5'11" 175 lbs. 2B/OF Bats-R
-Pure hitter, gap power
-Probably limited to 2B defensively
-Above average speed, intelligent baserunner
-Has never been drafted despite being a college Junior, not ideal size

Mitchell Jordan 6'2" 200 lbs. RHP
-Probably not a target with the 59th pick, but right up the Giants' alley in terms of type of player.
-Advanced command, not overwhelming stuff. Think Clayton Blackburn.

2016 MLB Draft: Bryan Reynolds, OF, Vanderbilt University

Continuing our series of 2016 MLB Draft profiles, we turn our attention to the college hitting ranks with a look at Vanderbilt University outfielder Bryan Reynolds.

A high school player from Brentwood, Tennessee, Reynolds wasn't drafted coming out as a senior in 2013; scouts were certainly aware of him but he was committed to Vanderbilt and was raw enough that teams didn't want to buy him away from school.

He proved more polished than anticipated, quickly seizing a regular job as a freshman, hitting .338/.395/.480 in 2014 while contributing 14 steals with a 23/49 BB/K ratio in 281 at-bat for the National Champion Commodores. His sophomore year was very similar: .318/.388/.462 with 17 steals in 286 at-bats, 31/67 BB/K. Hitting like that for a premium program put him in the spotlight heading into the wooden bat Cape Cod League and he didn't disappoint, hitting .346/.470/.395 last summer with three steals and a sharp 17/14 BB/K in 81 at-bats.

Reynolds has capped off his college career with an even better junior season: .335/.462/.615. He's already knocked a career-best 13 homers while showing an improved approach at the plate compared to past years, with 46 walks to his credit. Strikeouts remain fairly high with 57 whiffs but the production is undeniable.

Listed at 6-2, 210, Reynolds is a switch-hitter and natural right-handed thrower. His physical tools are more steady than excellent. His running speed is average to a tick above, reports pegging him anywhere from 50 to 55 depending on the source. He uses that speed very well, is a steal threat on the bases, and has handled center field without trouble this spring, playing errorless ball and showing good range. His arm is not a cannon and he may wind up in left field if he loses a step with age, but if he hits as expected that's OK.

Reynolds should hit. As with his running speed, his raw power isn't exceptional but he gets to it frequently thanks to a keen batting eye and a refined swing. The only real critique you can make is that his strikeout rate is a bit higher than ideal, but it certainly hasn't hampered him in any way. He had no problems with wooden bats in the Cape Cod League and has shown more pop this spring; the consensus seems to be that this is not a result of aluminum. Long-term he should hit for average with a high OBP and at least moderate power.

Overall, Reynolds is regarded as one of the safer selections in the draft and one who can reach the majors quickly. While such players are often knocked for having "low ceilings," Reynolds should not be under-estimated. He's done nothing but thrive against top-quality competition the last three years.

Most sources are projecting him in the back half of the first round or in the compensation rounds but it would not be a surprise to see him go sooner than that, maybe much sooner if he cuts an under-slot deal.

Here's some recent video from Andrew Krause.

Everything I've read is that this is a STEAL of a pick. 1st round talent, inexplicably fell. Just got home from a cousin's graduation, will do more research soon.

COACH CORBIN QUOTE:
Very talented young man who possesses multiple skills sets. Bryan could virtually play any position on the field but has transformed himself into an accomplished center fielder. He can impact the game from an offensive and defensive standpoint. In the short amount of time that he has been at Vanderbilt, he has developed as much as anyone as a player. He certainly has ‘special player’ abilities.

edit: wasn't Beede from Vandy?

Batted .346 in the Cape Cod League. Want a preview to who the Giants will draft? Check out the Cape Cod League standouts and go from there. They love kids who preform there.

2016 Draft: Bryan Reynolds - River Avenue Blues

2016 Draft: Bryan Reynolds

June 8, 2016 by Mike Axisa 7 Comments

Bryan Reynolds | OF

Background
Reynolds, 21, was undrafted out of high school, but he’s been a three-year starter at a powerhouse program in Vanderbilt. This spring Reynolds put up a .330/.461/.603 batting line with 13 homers, 49 walks, and 58 strikeouts in 62 games. He also performed well in the Cape Cod League last summer.

Scouting Report
Reynolds is one of those guys who does a little of everything but nothing exceptionally well. His weakest tool is his below-average throwing arm, which relegates him to left field long-term. Reynolds has good speed and instincts in the outfield, so he should be able to hold down center for the foreseeable future. At the plate, he’s a switch-hitter with good power from both sides, and his advanced approach allows him to hit for average too. No player is a lock to do anything, but Reynolds is as good a bet as any player in the draft to become at least an average big league hitter. Swing-and-miss issues are a concern — he had a 20.4% strikeout rate this spring, which is awful high for a top college hitter — especially since he’s not a hacker who will chase off the plate.

Miscellany
In their latest rankings Keith Law (subs. req’d), MLB.com, and Baseball America ranked Reynolds as the 16th, 23rd, and 31st best prospect in the draft class, respectively. The Yankees pick 18th. They’ve been connected to college bats in mock drafts recently, and outside of the elite top of the draft guys, Reynolds figures to be the best all-around college position player available when New York’s pick rolls around.

Giants draft Vanderbilt outfielder Bryan Reynolds with 59th pick of 2016 MLB draft

With the 59th pick of the 2016 MLB Draft, the San Francisco Giants select Bryan Reynolds, a switch-hitting outfielder from Vanderbilt. Now let me tell you exactly what to think about this player because it’s not like I googled him five seconds ago.

MLB Daily Dish took all of the pre-draft rankings from various sources, and they made an aggregate ranking. Reynolds was the 29th-ranked player in this method, which suggest that the Giants might have picked up a first-round talent with the 59th pick in the draft.

Keith Law had Reynolds going #30 overall to the Rangers:

Reynolds is a college guy who has more tools than your typical college hitter, with power and the potential to stay in center field.

MLB.com’s Jim Callis had him at #31 to the Mets:

Scouts would like to see Reynolds make more consistent contact, but he's a switch-hitter with the chance for four average-or-better tools. That makes him a first-rounder in this college position-player crop.

Almost sounds like a switch-hitting Jarrett Parker. Baseball America had Reynolds going #18 to the Yankees, and they wrote this in his scouting report:

Reynolds has a well-established track record as a three-year starter and steady performer for Vanderbilt, and he played for Team USA as a rising sophomore and had a strong summer in the Cape Cod League leading up to his junior year. Reynolds is a switch-hitter with intriguing raw power from both sides of the plate. That power has begun to translate into game action this spring, and some scouts project him to hit 15-20 home runs at the highest level.

Cape Cod League! Drink!

His bat-flipping and general flair? A solid 60 with 65 potential:

Because Reynolds was projected to go earlier in the draft, there might be some concerns about his signability. The recommended bonus for the 59th pick is $1,090,000, which might be less than expected.

But the Giants have a pretty strong track record of picking players who aren’t going to jimmy-jack them around (baseball term). While there was some concern about Buster Posey’s bonus demands, they proved to be mostly overblown. The toughest sign in recent memory was Conor Gillaspie, who angled for a 40-man roster spot. The Giants brought him back as a warning to their future draftees, not unlike Pentangeli’s brother inGodfather II.

At least, that’s probably what happened.

Welcome, Bryan Reynolds. Do good things. Most of the first selections of the Giants do good things and win championships, no pressure.

Sounds like Giants expect him to move rather quickly through the system. John Barr (the Giants scouting director) says the kid can play all 3 OF spots, and bat 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in a lineup.

Overwhelming positive reviews so far. I'm excited too!

Seems like a prototypical Giants OF pick. He LOOKS like Gary Brown, but his resume reads more like Parker.

Heath Quinn, OF 6'2" 190 lbs. Junior at Samford University.

Was the top available player among many lists when the Giants picked 95th. He was being linked to the Giants with the 59th pick. Another great value pick.

Power corner OF bat from the right side.

Matt Krook, LHP 6'4" 220 lbs. University of Oregon (scoooo Ducks!)

This is a high risk-high reward pick in the mold of Andrew Suarez from a year ago. Krook has the stuff to be a 1st rounder (was actually drafted in the compensation round out of High School, didn't sign), but was decimated by injuries most of his college career. Lacks the polish and command, absolutely needs work on them. If he does, he's definitely an impact pitcher.

I'm a little surprised, hope the Giants can sign him. They must have some under-slot picks lined up the next few rounds because it's going to take an over-slot to sign Krook. Though as a Bay Area native (San Mateo), he might have a little more incentive to sign.

Here you can see the fastball/curveball combination that can get him far. His stuff is nice, but it doesn't show the bad in this video.
