By my math, the Giants are currently approx 47K over. I assume Williams is an under-slot player, otherwise, the Giants are in the penalty.

11th - Jason Delay, C- Did not sign
25th - Mike Rescigno, P- Did not sign
28th - Jayden O'Dell, P- Did not sign
31st - Adam Laskey, P - Did not sign
33rd - Jarret Montgomery, P - Did not sign
38th - David Lee, P - Did not sign
39th - Andrew DiPiazza, P - Did not sign
40th - Nick Bennett, P - Did not sign

So we get 31 of 39 signed, 22 of first 23.

Biggest surprises: 30th rounder Nick Deeg. High upside lefty, many thought was going back to school. Signed today, very last minute. There was even less likelihood of him signing this morning when we signed 13th rounder Jose Layer, as his bonus pushed us to 4.9% over our allotment. If we went for any offer over $100K to Deeg, we would lose our 1st rounder next season. Apparently, Deeg signed for less than that, which was a pleasant surprise. Huge dude, 6'5" and his velocity has really gone up in the past year. 11th rounder Jason Delay. Pretty shocked he didn't sign, but still has a year of eligibility. I'm also just surprised we were able to sign so many of our top guys. The Giants usually do a great job of this, but this year more than most it seemed they got a lot of guys who would be tough signs.

According to MLB ( 2016 Draft bonus pools, pick values ) , the Giants have a $3,494,900 bonus pool for the first 10 rounds.

Adding up the numbers above (including $50K for 13th - Jose Layer), I get $3,664,300, an 'over' of $169.4K : 4.847%. Great work SFGRTB!!

I do think the org proactively targets signable players with the draft, which is why they lean hard toward college players. High school kids, unless they've got 7 figure dangling in front of them, probably think that they've got JC and/or the 4 year option to get drafted higher. Even JC players see one to two more shots are better draft positions in a 4 year. However, juniors will typically sign, unless they have been told that they are severely underdrafted and/or have been injured. Seniors see this as their last possible shot to go pro. The negotiations with them, especially, has got to be easy.

First...

OMG!!

The org really went bat-shit getting everyone signed. And six 100k+ bonus babies. Wow.

Second...

The org appears to have REALLY concentrated on OFers. 3 of the first 5 picks were OFers, and they all are playing real well in their first few weeks as pros. But on top of that, we got three 100k bonus baby OFers AND Jacob Heyward. That is 7 legit OF prospects in one draft. Just wow...

Thought I'd take a look at this draft, 5 years later. Here we go.

First, to recap, the guys that did not sign - Jason Delay, c (11th); Mike Rescigno, p (25th); Jayden O'Dell, p (28th); Adam Laskey, p (31st); Jarrett Montgomery, p (33rd); David Lee, p (38th); Andrew DiPiazza, p (39th); Nick Bennett, p (40th)
The following were later drafted and signed by other orgs: Delay (4th round, 2017, Pirates) Laskey (19th round, 2019, Cubs), Montgomery (7th round, 2018, Orioles), Lee (27th round, 2017, Pirates), DiPiazza (NDFA, 2020, Rockies), and Bennett (6th round, 2019, Brewers). Rescigno and O'Dell never played professionally. Both were college pitchers when the Giants drafted them. Delay may get a shot with the Pirates but none of the others are performing very well this year (or are already out of professional baseball).

Among those that the Giants signed, the following are no longer playing in any kind of professional baseball leagues: Gio Brusa, of (6th); Alex Bostic, p (10th); Ryan Kirby, 1st (12th); DJ Myers, p (15th); Chris Falwell, p (16th); Reagan Bazar, p (17th); Brandon Van Horn, ss (19th); Justin Alleman, p (20th); Will Albertson, c (21st); Malique Ziegler, of (22nd); Jacob Greenwalt, p (23rd); Nick Hill, of (26th); Mike Bernal, ss (29th); Nick Deeg, p (30th); CJ Gettman, p (34th); Sidney Duprey, p (35th); Ryan Matranga, c (36th); Chris Bono, of (37th). **It should be noted that Duprey did pitch in a winter league this past offseason but does not appear currently on any summer rosters.**

This leaves only 13 of the 31 players who signed in professional baseball. Three of these players are in independent leagues: Jose Layer, of (13th); Jeffry Parra, c (24th) and John Timmins, p (32nd). Parra is hitting well in the Frontier League but Layer and Timmins are both struggling. Timmins just latched on with Ogden of the Pioneer League after the Giants let him go a couple weeks ago.

Another pick, Ryan Howard, ss (5th) was let go this season by the Giants. He looked somewhat promising early in his time with the Giants org but could not hit well either in AA or AAA.

Out of the remaining 9 picks, 4 are in other organizations. The best known, Bryan Reynolds, of (2nd), has been playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He debuted with a nice season in 2019 and really struggled in 2020. However, he has bounced back with another good year, to date, in 2021. He has been, by far, the best pick by the Giants but they have never been able to see the fruits of that pick. Matt Krook, p (4th) was traded to the Rays prior to 2018 and is now pitching in the Yankees' system. He's pitched well in 12 games (11 starts) between AA and AAA. He could well earn a shot with the Yankees by the end of the year. Garrett Williams, p (7th) was also traded after 2019 and is now with the Cardinals, where he has struggled in their AAA bullpen. Lastly, Stephen Woods, p (8th), was also traded to the Rays prior to 2018 and since landed with the Royals. He also has been knocked around, both as a starter and reliever on their AA team.

That means only 5 of the 2016 draft picks remain within the Giants' organization as players. The highest remaining pick, Heath Quinn, of (3rd), has seen his career stall out. As recently as 2018, after he repeated a season with San Jose, he looked like he was bound for the big leagues. Then, he struggled in a month long stretch in Richmond in 2019 and got demoted back to San Jose, where he hit well. He, like every other minor leaguer, didn't get to play in 2020 and is back in high A ball, now with Eugene, for a 5th straight season (he appeared in 4 games with San Jose in 2016). He is hitting incredibly well (.326/.408/.674) in limited playing time (13 games) but is 26 years old and stuck behind numerous other outfielders.

The next highest remaining pick is 9th rounder Caleb Baragar, p. The guy who only signed for 20k is one of only 3 picks to make it to the big leagues so far. He did a serviceable job in the bullpen for the Giants last year (pedestrian 4.03 ERA but nice 0.985 WHIP) and is doing the same this year. His ERA has dropped to 0.49 but his WHIP went up to 1.364 and has seen his walk rate go from 2.0 to 5.4 and his K rate go down from 7.7 to 6.9.

The only other pick to make the big leagues is 14th rounder, Conner Menez, p (14th). Across three seasons, he has posted a 4.04 ERA, 1.299 WHIP, 4.3 walk rate and 9.6 K rate in 42.1 innings (4 starts and 19 relief appearances). He had his best year in 2020, but was inexplicably sent down to the alternate training site, despite some of the best numbers in a very shaky bullpen. Currently, he is struggling through his time with Sacramento.

The other two remaining picks are Jacob Heyward, of (18th) and Pat Ruotolo, p (27th). Both are currently on the Richmond squad. Heyward has slowly climbed through the org ranks despite okay to mediocre numbers. This is his 2nd year with the Flying Squirrels and is slashing .203/.335/.430 in 128 at-bats. Ruotolo is an intriguing player. He's pitched phenomenally throughout his professional career. In 134 games, all in relief, he's posted a 1.73 ERA, 0.962 WHIP, 3.2 W/9 and 13.0 K/9. This year, he's posted a 2.66 ERA, 0.56 WHIP, 1.3 W/9 and 12.8 K/9 in 20.1 innings (21 games). He looked like a fast riser early in his career, having reached Richmond by the 2nd half of 2018. However, an injury limited him to only 13 games in 2019 and, for some reason, the org sent him to San Jose, not Richmond or Sacramento, when he was healthy. He did well, lost the 2020 season and, again, got lost in the shuffle, going to Richmond to begin 2021. In my opinion, he's getting the Tyler Rogers' treatment by the org. I hope he gets a chance in AAA soon.

Overall, this draft has to be considered a bust. Within 5 years, 19 players are out of professional baseball and another 7 play elsewhere. Only 3 players have made the big leagues. One looks to be a solid starting outfielder for years to come but with another team. The other two look to be serviceable relievers for a few years. There is a possibility that another 1 to 3 picks could make the big leagues but its too early to consider them anything more than journeymen 4A/big league bullpen pieces.

I referenced three trades and forgot to show the return.
For Krook and Woods (along with Christian Arroyo and Denard Span) the Giants received Evan Longoria and cash. Essentially, they got a starting 3rd baseman for the past 3 years for 2 players who've yet to make the big leagues, a guy who hasn't stayed healthy enough to play regularly and a guy who retired after 2019. Pretty good trade for the Giants, especially since all 4 of those players only last 1 year with the Rays.
Garrett Williams was traded to the Angels with cash for Zach Cozart and Will Wilson. Cozart never played an inning with the Giants but Wilson is currently playing at AA and is a major prospect piece. Meanwhile, the Angels lost Williams to the Cardinals in the minor league Rule 5 draft.
Bryan Reynolds was traded with Kyle Crick and international bonus slot money for Andrew McCutchen and cash. McCutchen never panned out very well with the Giants but they did send him over to the Yankees for Abiatal Avelino and Juan de Paula. Avelino was allowed to walk and de Paula was traded, with Derek Law and Alen Hanson for Kevin Pillar. This trade sequence is a little more complex but, essentially, a top prospect was bundled with a bunch of other prospects and some former prospects who didn't pan out for Kevin Pillar.
The first two trades were genius moves by FZ to recoup some value on fading prospects. However, the last one was a major fumble. Will Wilson's future may make the difference between a net loss and a net gain on these trades.
