I'm not implying the Heat 4 would win a pickup game over the other teams listed young players.

I'm talking chances of competing again any time soon.
Which of the teams that you listed would you say have that chance?
Which of those teams has any significant cap space next summer?

I'm not saying that none do, I don't know.
I only know that the Heat does.

As far as next years draft picks.

2017 Activity
First Round: Miami’s own pick

Second Round: Miami’s own pick to be sent to Memphis if it lands in top 40 per the terms of the Chris Andersen trade on 2/16/16, and to Atlanta if not per the terms of the trade for James Ennis on 6/27/13
so yah you dont get it if its in the top 10 of the 2nd round because you gave it to memphis to cut salary- big surprise

most all those teams have significant cap space next offseason- more talent, and more draft assets

I'm also not in the business of comparing who have the best young core. Reason is it usually does not matter unless you're able to make a slam dunk in free agency or through a trade. That is usually what puts you over the top and turns you into a title contender.

well...having more draft assets and more talented young players certainly helps you facilitate a trade.

If an all star level player got put on the trade market- teams like Philly, Boston, Minnesota- that plenty of young players and or draft assets would easily have the inside track over teams without the same player assets and draft assets.

you can always try and rely on unrestricted free agency- but how often do you get the guy you are actually targeting- AND- how often do those guys actually work out?

does it surprise you that you wont get your 2nd round pick this year becuase you gave it away to Memphis to take on Chris Anderson's contract and to save Arison $$$$? does not surprise me.

No, I have Bennett worst, unless he becomes serviceable.

Guys like Bowie and Oden failed due to injuries.

Bennett just sucks.

He has no excuse.

I also have Thabeet up in the top 5.

Somewhere, the Kandi man and Kwame are doing a happy dance.

At least those guys and Bargnani lasted beyond their rookie deals.
id have to go Oden just because of the expectations....benet's draft was historically bad and its notli ke anyone in the top 7 of that draft makes you say- WOW- they blew that pick and should have got player X.

Oden was supposed to be the next Hakeem---- and picked right after him was Durant.

Building strictly through the draft without any success doesn't usually work that well....Unless you're drafting a Lebron or Durant...or get lucky as the Warriors did in B2B years with Steph and Klay.

Building through the draft is fine but you also need to be successful in free agency. You can't just build through the draft and fail every summer in free agency and expect to be a good basketball team.

Being cheap or being smart?
Do you know/understand the penalties for repeat tax offenders?
I doubt any 2nd round pick will offset that, and nobody knew Bosh would lose his health when that trade was made.

The Heat seems to be pretty sharp on finding diamonds in the rough.
South Beach will always be South Beach.
Talk to me a year from now, and show me your comparisons.

Your Cavs are a prime example that sucking for years guarantees nothing.

sure you need to supplement your core with free agency- but you cant build a core through free agency.

especially in todays era where the CBA has incentivized guys staying with their current teams even more- and the propensity for teams to trade players before they become free agents to at least recoup some of their value.

in the last 3-4 years how many major free agents have changed teams and made a big impact outside of Lebron? It just doesnt happen that often. You might be able to pry away a Al Horford or a declining Dwight Howard--- but stars just dont often move via free agency and the new cba rules make that even harder.

RW just signed an extension, so many guys are signed long term now...Blake Griffin and Chris Paul are free agents- but i doubt either leave.

Trade seems like the best way toge t something done in todays NBA and if you are looking to trade a star thefirst teams you dial are Boston, Philly and Minne becuase ofthei r load of assets.

Minnesota is the best example as they havent made the playoffs in well over a decade-

but no one in their right mind would possibly pick Miami's roster and picksit uation over Minne's, Bostons or Philly's right now- or the Lakers, or really- a handful of other teams.

I mean- even John Wall, and Beal- id rather have just those 2 then the Heats core-

Giannis, Jabari Parker, Khris Middleton, Thon Maker- not a contest. especially when you consider Miami has dealt away 2 future first rounders and multiple 2nd rounders into the future.

the Cavs are a great example of what tanking and renting out your cap space can do.....i mean- they played it perfectly

tank- get astud to build around in Kyrie- get a ton of assets totrade foranother stud- K Love---- and show all that to free agents- to convince them to come play here-lbj . get some high end support players like Tristan...

they played it perfectly.

But where are these teams going without making moves in free agency or by trade? The Wizards missed the playoffs last year and very well may miss it again this year. Milwaukee missed the playoffs last year and will miss it again this year. Minnesota will likely miss the playoffs again. In other words they're going nowhere.

They didn't play anything perfectly. They just got lucky that LBJ is from Ohio and wanted to win a title for his state.
