The TV partners are paying the NBA $24 billion to broadcast these games. You have a nationally televised game between the top team in the East and a top 4 team in the West being shown during prime time and one team sits it's 3 best players?

Then, that same team is playing the next night against a team that it might actually still be able to beat without it's 3 best players in a game that is only going to be broadcast on that teams channel, but it's 3 best players are going to play?

The excuse used to be "2nd game of a back to back" but now it's the first game and vs. the better team? I'm sure the league office, as well as the TV partners, are very unhappy and hopefully this will be addressed in the off-season.

I wonder if the TV partners have any recourse to take action if the NBA isn't putting out the quality of product that they are paying for?

How long is this new TV contract signed for?
I imagine the recourse is not agreeing to pay near as much in the future, which will lower the player contracts.

Not sure how long the current TV deal is. You're probably right re: the recourse being that they won't pay as much next time. I was wondering/hoping if there was something that could be done during the current contract.

I'd expect though, that unless there is some specific language about the quality of the product, that there isn't much the TV partners can do other than wait it out and come in at a lower amount next time.

Not even sure how sophisticated the offense actually is. Even the simplest of offenses will work if you have good ball movement and guys who can shoot and are willing to make the extra pass.

This team is so fun to watch.
I was so sick of watching ISO ball where 1 of 2 players would dribble the clock down for 18 seconds without a pass.

They could select to show other teams next year, but that might be counter productive because then some people won't tune in to begin with.

He should go in with a razor wire wrapped bat at this point. It's beyond ridiculous now. Adam Silver is going to have to step in. It's disrespectful to the TV partners that paid HUGE amounts of money to show these games and they are sitting players in these national games. Those TV partners are the exact reason why the NBA has boomed over the last decade and why people like Lebron and every other player have loaded their pockets. They're gonna have to implement some kind of injury DL where if you're placed on it, you can't come off for X games (so you can't pick and choose games claiming injury like Kyrie and Love) and a rule that says you can only use a DNP-CD for "rest" for 1 player per game and it can't be consecutive games either (to prevent multiple people sitting out like the Spurs and Warriors do)

I agree. I think also having independent physicians on hand to evaluate players is another method as well. But for Lue, there's no stopping him from playing Lebron and others for a couple of minutes, then sitting them the rest of the night.

I'm not saying this is even remotely realistic, but I would be pretty bummed if the Heat derail the Cavs and prevent the rubber match. And me having to worry about that shows how good the Heat look right now.

It's a remote chance that the Heat take the Cavs down. The Cavs would be rightfully heavily favored in that matchup. But do note that if the Heat were somehow to take down the Cavs, the roasting on this forum would be legendary. You'd never have to hear Wiggy talk shit again.

From Lebron's perspective, this works out perfectly. The NBA and these TV partners sign contracts that last for about a decade or so (not sure of the length of this contract). But when it comes time to re-negotiate these deals, the next crop of players are screwed on this one because the TV partners are going to note games like last night, or the Spurs vs. Warriors a few weeks ago. The biggest loser from all of this last night was the NBA fans and Adam Silver. Meanwhile Lebron will be able to get paid well over $30 million for the rest of his career over the next 5-6 years. Once he's an owner he'll be on the other side where player salaries going down will help him.

Agree. It's nice to have a star quality player who can do that when necessary. But overall, it's a far better brand of basketball when players are all working to get anyone on the team the best available shot, rather than waiting for 1 or 2 guys to get their own shot.

It's basic economics at this point. Yes, the market dictated that some of these players were going to get these outlandish contracts. But guys like Conley who's a decent PG, but not even a top 20 player making $30+ mil per year was a sign that this wasn't sustainable. The irony in all of this is that not only will this not last long term. It will be the players/coaches themselves and their actions that get the next TV contract at a much lower value than what it should be.

Yeah, that's where the problem is. People, especially casual fans, tune in for "names" whether it be players or teams.

That's why any team Lebron is on or that has multiple stars will get the most nationally broadcast games and why the Lakers get more nationally broadcast games than they deserve based on the current product and record.

Leaves the TV partners to choose between games involving teams/players that casual fans don't know or care about, but will play all of their players...or games with star players who may not play because they're "tired."

I don't see it ever happening, but this why I would prefer a free market system in the NBA. If done correctly, it would create a system where players are paid a lot closer to their actual worth.

I think we can all agree that players like Lebron, KD, Kobe when he played, etc. don't come close to making what they are actually worth in a free market system.

At the same time, we all have been complaining/laughing at some of the contracts that were given to 2nd tier players like Conley, guys who were paid on who they used to be like Rose, Deng, Noah, etc. or guys who even at their best, have never been worth the contracts they got like Mozgov and Tristan Kardashian.

A free market system would remedy that, but it won't happen because the CBA has to be voted on and agreed to by both sides and there are a whole lot more "rank and file" NBA players than there are superstars.

Yup. There's no clear and cut perfect system in place unfortunately. Lebron can take solace in the fact that his endorsement money exceeds his NBA salary and that he'll likely be part of the 3-comma club in the future. At the same time, Lebron making about $70 mil per year off his salary alone would be gross when he sits out marquee games like the one last night. I saw tweet somewhere about the amount of games that Karl Malone missed over his career. This resting has gotten so far out of hand.
