IMO, that makes him more attractive (depending on the price). Sign him to a minor league contract for a 'large' amount (for minor league, say, 100K) and call him up if needed.

You know the rules better than I, but I think Medlan would make at least the ML minimum, no? I can't imagine there isn't a team that will add him to the 40 man...

They offered Ishikawa a contract. I am shocked.

That means we have no openings for the rule V and any FAs we sign will require a DFA.

Not a good sign.

I don't necessarily agree. At least 7 guys who are "DFA-able" for a FA:

JCP
Parker
Kickham
Duvall
EA
AnVil
Dominguez

Others who could be easily traded:
Black
Heston
Cordier
Brown
Hacktor
Kontos

That's 13 guys...I think we are plenty flexible.

So, here's my estimate of where the payroll is at right now:

Bum 7
Cain 21
Huddy 12
Timmy 18
Biggie (1.5)
KCya 5
JA 6
JLo 4
Machi 0.5
Kontos 0.5
Strick 0.5
Buster 17
Susser 0.5
BB9 (3.5)
Panik 0.5
Craw (2.5)
Kobe 1.5
Duffman 0.5
Scoots 7
Herk 19
Oxy 10
Shark (3.5)
Ishi (1)

TOTAL 142.5, with SP and LF needed, maybe 3b. (Arb estimates in parens)

Assuming we raise payroll 10% over last year, that gives us about 23MM to sign two guys.

Now bring me Santana and Rasmus!

Also, David Huff was non-tendered by the Yanks.

That really surprises me...he pitched incredibly well for them.

Sabey Sabes...get on it!

IMO, I would avoid Santana. Why waste the draft pick when they could sign McCarthy, who had similar numbers and is the same age. Giants aren't going to target guys with QO's attached to them, unless it's Scherzer but I still have doubts we are really pursuing him at all.

They seem to be targeting Lester...

Juan Francisco, anyone?

It might come to that, or Mark Reynolds :noidea:

I looked into Francisco when I saw his name on the non-tender list. Just looks like HicKs all over again, but maybe with a little more consistent power. Anyone know about his D?

Why go for Reynolds when Francisco looks like a younger, cheaper version of the same thing? Maybe with fewer Ks, though...

Agreed. I have zero interest in Santana UNLESS we sign AT LEAST one other QO FA. Signing only Santana would be almost as bad as Michael Tucker.

Amazingly, Reynolds K rate is falling and his walk rate is alright. Francisco is the definition of free-swinger. Actually, looking at the numbers, Reynolds' looks like his .196 average last year was extremely unlucky. His BABIP was a terrible .218, that is bound to increase. And his contact rates are alright, he swings at pitches in the zone and spits on ones outside. Neither player is known for their glove. I can't say definitively who is better, but Francisco is a man without a position, plays 3B by default because of is arm. Reynolds has played more 1B recently, but still has played a decent amount of 3B.

Also amazingly, I've convinced myself that Mark Reynolds wouldn't be the worst signing if we got Lester and a decent LFer. His power plays anywhere, and he's due to hit for better average. Not .300 better, but .230? Hey if he's batting 7th, I'll take a 30 homer threat player there for cheap salary and Lester pitching.

Multiple reports have Santana looking for 5 years and after having to settle for 1 year deal last year, you know he wants to get paid. Add that to the loss of a draft pick, not a smart move IMO.

A few other non-tenders that are interesting...

1) Daniel Descalso - St Francis alumn and has played quite a bit if 3B.

2) Evereth Cabrera - Has a PED past, and has had a HORRIBLE year away from the diamond, so I do not expect the Giants to look at him, but the kid is a wiz with the glove.

3) Wade LeBlanc - Certainly worth a non-roster invite to compete for the 5/6/7 spots.

4) Gordon Beckham - All the talent in the world, but has never been able to put it together.

5) Justin Smoak - I am not interested in him, but Toronto just traded for him, now they are exposing him to the open market. Interesting.

He seems to be an average defender, projects as a backup and not a starter. Kobe is probably better

So with Lester and Hunter off the board that leaves:

1. Scherzer
2. Shields
3. Headley
4. Melkman
5. Liriano
6. McCarthy
7. Markakis
8. Rasmus
9. Hamel

As possible targets
