Lester has either come into his own, or just had his career year and will regress to norm. (Last season was a HUGE best year for him. Best in ERA, WHIP, K/BB)

6 of the last 7 years, his ERA+ has been well above league average, averaging 127. He's put up less than 200 IP only once in those last 7 years (191), averaging 4.3 WAR/season over that time frame. Seems to me his outlier season was 2012, and the other six years he was at an all star level.

If you were ever going to do the Zito again, this would be the guy.

I heard him say that on KNBR.

That is about as definitive a statement as can be made. And that was said post-Panda, so I actually believe it now.

Yeah, but it's only some chump named Bobby Evans who agrees with you....

Yeah, what we really should have done is traded him in July like some here suggested or demanded.

:L

Far be it for the FO to posture. They would never ever do that. Would they?

The game is chess, people. Not tic tac toe.

I don't get it. He spends his entire career so far with one team, has been an all star, and has three WS rings, and bolts for 6% more money? Did some one offend him at some point, like talk about his mama, or does his agent (read: money) have that much power over him?

Boy, a bunch of panda hats are going to clog the landfills. :)

One aspect that hasn't been discussed is that successful people, like Sandoval, need new challenges. He has three rings. A king's ransom. He wants to move on, keep things fresh. If that is the case, I don't blame him.

Fify.
Take Tony G for example. Spent his entire career w/pads, and even gave them a hometown deal to boot.
Now you may want to quibble whether he was successful, i.e., no rings. I don't. Jeebus, I almost cried when he left us.

Too bad he'll be 31 next season and is a career .258 hitter in 11 minor league seasons. Maybe he tears it up next spring, but not gonna get excited about a HR derby win in Venezuela.

Why not? Edgardo Alfonzo always did very well in winter ball! :gaah:

Medlen was non-tendered by the Braves today. Does he have injury issues? He had 197 IP, 1.223 WHIP and 3.11 ERA last year and only made 5.8M (from BBRef).

Assuming there are not any injury issues, I would put him at the top of my wish-list...

Edit:

Oops...

Just saw those numbers were from 2013. He was a TJ dude in '14...

Nevermind...

Nick Markakis Statistics and History | Baseball-Reference.com

OPS the last two years: .685, .729. oWAR: 0.3, 1.9. Meh.

dWAR last 3 years: -1.2, -1.3, -0.5. Will someone please explain how you win a Gold Glove when you are scored as BELOW replacement level?!?

IMHO, someone is going to WAY overpay for him, and frankly I hope it's not us. Spend the money on overpaying for Lester. LOL.

Everybody needs to get over Melkyphobia.

I don't think most of us here would mind adding Melky. But the guys who actually make the decisions will simply not want him back.

I hope he signs somewhere soon so you can just focus on telling us Posey should play third.

IMO, that makes him more attractive (depending on the price). Sign him to a minor league contract for a 'large' amount (for minor league, say, 100K) and call him up if needed.

Well, I would talk about last night's game but...

Sorry, wasn't clear. Sign him to a non-guaranteed minor league contract (100K), with a pro-rated $2M contract if/when called up.

Yeah, I wouldn't be opposed. It's his second TJ, but would be worth a look IMO. I think he will be sought-after by quite a few teams. Beachy is another arm I would be intrigued with that the Braves cut loose.

Also, Alexi Ogando was non-tendered. He could be a minor league option as well.

For the record, I don't want Markakis either. I am a fan, but he is starting his decline. I saw a lot of him when he was first coming up because I lived in Delaware at the time and I got the Orioles network. I would rather re-sign Morse for way less money/years, and focus on a Starting Pitcher and a 3B......
