Melky: NOT HAPPENING

Well, neither was WSC III when we were going 5-18 in June/July.

You are probably right, but I'll bet the odds aren't at zero.

IMO the odds we sign Lester or Scherzer are higher than the odds we sign Melky.

Markakis an average to below average defender, so I can't see them moving Pence out of RF for him. He's a solid starter, not an all-star, so I could get behind something like 3/36 or 2/25. Don't know if he'd take the pay cut though.

Didn't Markakis win a gold glove this year?

Residual steroid perceptions aside, I don't like the idea of signing a supposedly top-shelf pitcher to an expensive long-term contract. The odds of success are historically not good. Lester or Scherzer total contract values will likely be double that of Melky. And it could be argued that we need a quality OF more right now than we need a quality SP. My two cents.

And Jeter has multiple GGs on his mantle.

To be fair, I have not seen Markakis play in the field, so I do not know if he deserved the GG or not. I just know that GGs CAN be complete jokes.

I believe that tz agrees with you here. He wasn't saying that the Giants were going to sign Lester or Scherzer. He was saying that the Giants were NOT going to sign Melky.

Which I agree with. Melky is not coming back.

You missed my point. We have ZERO chance of signing either Lester or Scherzer (for the reasons you state). And that's still a bigger chance than we sign Melky. IMO.

Yeah, I wouldn't know him from Adam; never seen him play. I just heard that he was a gold glove winner this year. I would think though that one would have to at least be pretty good defensively to get one.

In the absence of any other data, sure. It is a good QUICK gauge of a players defensive prowess.

But there are too many "Jeters" out there to take the award at face value. Jeter was a below average defensive SS for most of his career, yet won multiple GG awards.

You are assuming he will have a "normal" performance arc assuming his gets the long contract. I see ZERO evidence that that will occur.

He stated a couple years ago that he would get fit "later". That he didn't need to at that time. Then he comes to a contract year and, surprise surprise, he is in shape.

Being in shape is just not the norm for him. He does not have the interest in it to keep it up when his nuts are not in the fire. A 6-year contract officially removes his nuts from the fire.

"So he will relax the first couple of years and pick it up in the 3rd or 4th year". But he will be older by that time and likely not able to turn it back on. I stated earlier that I would prefer a 4/80 to a 5/80 just because of this issue.

I'm assuming four years of 120ish OPS+ and 3.0ish WAR. Not all star Pablo, but a solid, above average starter. You know, kind of like what he's been doing.

And why in the world would you prefer 4/80 to 5/80? That makes ZERO sense, bro. You could just release him after year four if he's awful.

Defensive metrics/numbers from previous seasons were largely against his defense before this season.
