So what is everyone's take on Gradkowski being activated off PUP yesterday? It made me think of a few different situations:
1. Landry Jones was being given the start to camp/preseason to prove his worth. The coaches saw this as his make or break preseason for him, so they weren't in any rush to get Gradkowski back. No Bruce meant more reps for Landry. Now that Bruce has been activated, I'm thinking the coaches saw all that they needed to see from Landry.
2. Gradkowski's injury was more serious than originally indicated. The urgency to get Bruce healthy and back into form was increasing. Last week of camp, so they probably wanted Bruce to get some sort training camp practice in.

Not sure which idea holds more water, but I'm thinking option number 1 seems the most logical. Bruce was seen throwing during each practice, just not in pads. So I doubt the shoulder hindrance was anything serious. One things for sure, I don't think we will see much more of Jones this preseason. At least not in the fashion that we have seen him in the last 2 games (playing 75-100% of game). They might let him play the last preseason game against the Panthers, but that's probably all. I hope they give Tyler Murphy & Tajh Boyd some reps in these next few games.

My take on Jones is that he underwhelmed, yet again. He showed some improvements in his decision making, but the mechanics just weren't as developed like they had hoped. He went from being wildly inaccurate to simply inaccurate. Don't get me wrong, he did make some great throws, but he was still very inconsistent. He still struggles with pocket presence, as he almost always looked like a doe in headlights after his 3-5 step drops. His checkdowns were flustered because of it.

I want to say that I don't think he is going to make the 53 this season, but I think he has showed "just enough" to keep the coaches in his corner. I hate it, as I'm sure you all do, but unless Murphy or Boyd really steps up this week and the rest of preseason... Jones might very well make the 53 again.

I think they were just taking it conservative with Grad...he's the clear cut #2...knows the OFC, should not require a ton of reps to get ready to watch. Whereas Landry I think they wanted to give him a chance to earn the #3 spot. Has he earned it? idk.

Landry is never going to be a starter in this league...I think they know that now...I thought they wanted a dual threat guy for QB3, but unless we see them getting reps in this next game...there is a chance that Landry does indeed make the 53.

heres my take. When landry jones was in school, he had talks of being a surefire round 1 pick, then he opted to go back to school. Well he stunk and dropped to the fourth. The steelers saw his protoypical size, and prior hype and were really hoping they got a steal, a guy that could bakc up ben, and be pretty darn good. Here we are years later, and they want to know if they can resign him as a long term qb2 or not. He has shown that hes junk, and we have depth at alot of other positions. so i think thye may be getting bruce back to get rid of landry, he may not make it past first cuts.......

He's going to make it past first cuts. Because the deadline for first wave of cuts to reduce rosters to 75 is 2 days before the final preseason game. I'm thinking he will be a 2nd wave cut. They'll keep him around to play some fodder time during the final preseason game. They don't let Ben play that last game. So if they want to protect Ben's insurance policy, aka Bruce, then they need to keep capable arms around.

But Murphy or Boyd could be around. I think Boyd is going to be a 1st wave cut because if he hasn't been able to steal reps from Landry then he must be awful.

I'd be more content with Gradkowski as the backup. They should look into another project as the QB3. Someone will get cut that is worthy. Bringing in Orton or Vick should be reserved for desperate times.
