Headley isn't worth it. Let Marlins land him. Talk about over paying.

But 9 million for a guy who throws 60-70 innings is totally plausible?

(And I say that as a Miller fan.)

That was my initial, gut thought as well. But then a few points need to me considered...

1) He is a valuable FA (not a dumpster-dive).

2) He plays a position of extreme scarcity at the MLB level at the moment.

3) there are medical explanations for his drop in productivity over the last 2 years. There are also indications that those issues have been addressed and he should be closer to the old Headley then the Headley if the last two years.

Baseball salaries for non-dumpster-dives skyrockets every year. This is nothing new, but fans are never able to grasp this. I remember when, i think it was Canseco, signed something like a 5/16 and I was absolutely floored. It was a contract that me shake my head anytime I thought about it for more than 5 seconds. Today, the absolute minimum you see a 5-year deal for would be in the 55M range and the longest you will see a 16M deal would be 3 years, and that is either an older player who was able to get someone to pay the extra year, or a kid buying out a few arb years.

The market seems to be cooling on Chase Headley. Giants (wisely) won't go past three years. The Astros and Yankees appear to be front-runners.

The Astros beefed up their bullpen Wednesday by signing Luke Gregerson and Pat Neshek.

Both former Padres. When Gregerson has that slider sliding, he's a deadly setup man. When it's hanging, someone's going yard.

I like Gregerson. Astros were probably always going to get whoever they wanted in relief because of the lack of state income tax. A team like the Jays (who were in on him) probably would've needed to bump up their AAV to $8m or so, which would be too much.

Its great to see Neshek get paid. I'm sure he'll be good for at least two seasons

Having two shut-down setup guys is big. Especially with the SPs the Astros have coming up, having a solid bully is important for their confidence.

I like both of these deals.

So many are reporting that Headley is the most sought-after free agent left. I'd say he's played his cards very well. Whoever gets him is going to drastically overpay but I predict he out-performs Flablo over the life of the contract.
