I just hope one of the Sams falls to the Flames in the #4 hole (not likely, but you never know what the Oilers might do).

You can probably get Michael Sam there. Good PR move too

If the Panthers don't trade their pick I think it ends up being Ekblad, One of the Sam's, Drasaitl(sp) and then the other Sam

I'm hoping the Pens can find a way to acquire some draft picks. They have their first and then don't pick again until the 100's somewhere. Yuck.

That probably means having to trade Letang and or Neal or someone of significance - it'll be hard to get picks without trading some significant pieces

I wouldn't bother if I were the Pens.

1) It looks to be a really shallow draft with not much after the top 10. One never knows but that seems to be the feeling for this draft.

2) The Pens front office might not be in the best state to give up players for picks, given their recent changes. It might take some time to develop a sound drafting strategy

Yep this goes along with what I said earlier, if you're going to get picks you would have to trade some of your better players - basically what you'd be saying is that we're not really in it to win next year(even with Crosby and Malkin), we're trying to restock for the next 2-3-4 years

Asked six scouts at the #NHL combine today who they would take first overall if it was their choice. Every one said Aaron Ekblad

Burke might not want Sam Bennett anywhere near his team. Hard to have pugnacity, truculence or belligerence when you can't do a single pull-up. And he may need a healthy dose of testosterone.

Yeesh. My pushing-forty, out-of-shape ass can still do at least of couple of those bad boys. :L

Who cares if he can do a pull-up or not? You could probably do a pull up or two but that doesn't mean you are an NHL worthy player - same with me

Only thing that matters is what he does on the ice - he has the talent, plain and simple - can't teach that - he will do just fine

I hardly insinuated that I'm an NHL worthy player. Quite the opposite actually, which was kind of my point.

I was mostly joking but since you went all preachy on me I'll tell you who might care that he can't do a pull-up... NHL GMs and scouts.

Here's why:

1) It shows he hasn't yet developed enough strength to play with men. Not necessarily a big deal but it means he's probably not NHL ready and likely won't be for some time. There will be significant extra development needed for this player.

2) He obviously hasn't yet developed a strong work ethic off the ice. This is something that player personnel people (many of them at least) will consider.

3) His upper body strength is flat out not as good as his peers. That is likely a concern for some but probably not for others.

I love his style of play: edgy, a bit mean and has great vision. There's a lot to like about this player. This is a definite flaw though. He better get a bunch stronger if he wants to keep playing a tough, edgy style with the big boys. I'm sure he'll still go high in the draft as plenty of teams feel they can fix this by implementing their own diet and training programs.

However to say that nobody cares is not true at all. The combine is meant to inform NHL front offices about draft eligible players. I'm sure they have input on what they want to see and I'm sure most of the teams will give this some thought/discussion before the draft.

Didnt rnh do only 1 bench at 135 at the combine his draft year?

I think gary roberts did something similar at his first procamp

The kid might not have had a good training program. To have put upthepoints he did as a 17 year old in the o he must have some semblance of strength... Who knows? Maybe he over trained his lower body and has alot of lower trunk mass (i said pardon?) and his under trained upper body couldnt lift it. Although he didnt end up top 10 in the leg strength tests either :noidea:

Any gm or scout who questions the kids work ethic based on a pull up test should be fired

Now i can see it affecting his draft position because sure some teams might want a guy in the lineup next season. It sounds like there are only a few kids capable of that for next season anyways. So maybe teams picking 4th or later with such a short range focus should prob trade down for a guy already in the league who can step into their lineup right away

How much time does a cdn major junior player have to work out hardcore anyways with the schedule they have? Esp a skilled guy who is relied on so heavily and plays big grueling minutes?

Versus say a euro or us highschooler who might be playing 20 to 30 fewer games a season???

The summers are their chance to put on muscle. A pro team will be able to give him a pro workout program

I bet Tyler Biggs did lots of pullups before the Leafs traded up to take him. Now he sits in the AHL pressbox.
