I wouldn't overreact too much to the Stanford game. They have a great defense and there aren't going to be many offenses that are going to move the ball well against them this year.

Now... if the Husky offense can't move the ball against a Cal defense that just allowed the most passing yards in the history of FBS/Division I football, then there's a problem. Granted, Halliday is really, really good and they throw the ball a lot at WSU, but based on the number of wide open completions I saw just in the highlight reel of that game alone, I don't think scoring points should be too difficult next week.

My comments about Smith aren't just due to that game. That was the 5th game with him as coach and play caller and his offenses have not adapted in game to things that aren't working and haven't seen the progression from game to game we expect. Yes, they should score more points next week even on the road, but Cal also scored over 60 themselves and have a hell of a passer.

They had two weeks to prepare and work on the problems on the offense that even Petersen acknowledged they had. We will find out a lot about that staffs ability to coach in this game. If Miles looks as bad throwing screen passes and they have the same issues I'll be calling for Smith's head. If they look like they are progressing I won't. Just that simple.

It's game day guys.

I'm excited and nervous. No idea what to expect from UW's offense, but we will learn a lot about this team after this game. UW has the talent advantage across most of the positions, but Cal's QB is on fire while ours ice cold.

Very excited for this game as well. The line was basically a pickum. The books as well knew we find out a lot about both teams as well and weren't willing to favor either.

Stanford was a beast of a way to open PAC play with our new coaching staff . Like how this game sets up and our chances. Minimize Cal trying to turn it into a pinball machine shootout.

P.S.

I want them to unleash Shaq all game long. At least 5 RB plays with him as well on offense. Today needs to be the Shaq Attack show.

Take a win by large numbers every week, all week. Still, they were fortunate to have so many things go their way this game. Obviously Ross's play was huge and I'm glad they got him the ball a lot more than twice and they did find a running game at times. Wasn't that happy with the play calling and I don't think you are going to get those kinds of drives on screens and draw plays against some of the better defenses around the conference.

They were really gifted 14 points, one that was one of the more strange plays I've ever seen. Pretty sure I've never seen a player fumble a ball just outside the goal line on what should just be a straight QB sneak.

Take those gift points away and the offense scored (or was primarily responsible for) 17 points. That's a problem when this was maybe the worst defense you will see the rest of this year (WSU not withstanding).

That defense though. All but shutout one of the nations top offenses. Kikaha was killing it. Shaq brought it. Budda baked it. They still made mistakes, but really played a solid game.

What was your views? Happy, but still have concerns? Stop bitching, it was a big win! Dude, it's just Cal so we learned nothing? Chime in on Petersen's first conference win.

Happy, but still have concerns

...and they are offensive in nature. Naturally!

Grats to Coach Pete and the kids first off.

However... We've played 3 P5 teams to this point, in those 3 games we've totaled 9pts in the second half. Not sure whats going on here. 2 of those games were against very weak defenses. :noidea:

I do like that Coach Pete had the kids ready for the road trip, and they delivered in a big way the first half. Well the D did all game. Offense is still worrisome, but there are some likeable things there as well. Most notably the lack of turnovers. Still only 1! :suds:

Yeah, well you aren't going to turn it over that often and your QB is going to have a high pass completion percentage when you throw mostly just screens all day. :gaah:

But enough bitching for today. Time to be happy with the W for now.

Plenty of positives and few negatives.

Defense? What more could you ask for. They went down to Cal and kept one of the most prolific offenses in the country. An offense that was avg 50+ points a game, and held them to 7, including shutout in the 2nd half.
And our pass D really stepped up today. We're talking the Bear Raid. We kept them very honest and rarely gave up the big play. Great pressure up front. Nicely done. Our D continues to keep it close for us. Bravo.

Offense: Best game out of Miles this year for sure. Looked confident out there. Passes were crisp and mostly on target. A huge one was that we really got the run game established early and kept it up. Nice mix of the run and pass today. Offense didn't make a lot of stupid mistakes.

Turnovers: Cal - 3, UW - 0

Special teams: Didn't give up anything big. Solid.

Negatives: As wiz pointed out, the offense kind of sputtered during the 2nd half.
Some flags were we def deserved the call. I saw very Petersen like disciplined ball today, but also got a bit too chippy during a lot of plays and were very close to personal fouls a few times.
As for the offense, yes, good dose of screen and short passes today. But again, some of that could of simply been Petersen knowing all too well the major deficiencies with Cal's D and was comfortable with running more of those kind of passes. That we didn't have to depend on just trying to bust open the big plays on most passes. The TD passes to Campbell and Perkins were still big time throws.

Overall, most complete game from the entire team today. Lots to be positive about going into next week.
5-1. Very much on target. GO DAWGS!!!

It was a quality win! Needed and now we have the week of zero's, I know its down there, but I would not be surprised if they went in there and stole a win.....

Side note, if Shaq goes in the draft this year Kelly drafts him for the Eagles....

Congrats to Hau'oli Kikaha. Now holds the single season record for sacks (15.5) and still 4 more games to go.

Not expecting much from this game. Zona has a tough offense and you really don't even need a defense to stop our offensive Juggernaut. I'm guessing UW will be down by double digits before the half and will fold well before the end of the 4th. I just have zero confidence in this squads ability to string together 4 quarters of UW football.

PAC12 announces the Apple Cup gets a 7:30pm start time. Sat, 29th. FS1.

Atleast it sets up better for a good Husky fan presence there compared to the the past couple @WSU apple cups with the PAC putting it as 12noon the day after thanksgiving. Those sucked.
