I think this was better than some of his losses to Djokovic at the USO or AO.

He had a better chance to win this one.

I am not sure about that but what I know is that at this stage in his life, Roger has proven that age is not only a number but he is far and above a true, true champion.

If Roger is going to win another major, it will need to be here. Hard to imagine him winning another Hard Court or French Open title.

Rafa is my favorite player. But down the road I am crossing my fingers for just one more outta Fed.

as fans, we're lucky to have had the 2 greatest players of all time (in my opinion) playing at the same time.

You may be right, but I will not write off Roger in any major.

off of grass, i don't like his chances at any major now

fed has nothing to prove, though, and if he still enjoys playing, then good for him

Really wanted this for Fed. This is the best he has played for a while and it still wasn't good enough.

We should all feel privileged to have lived in the time of Fed and Nadal

Yeah Fed has nothing to prove. The guy still makes it to the 2nd week of majors and usually the QF of most majors at his age.

I'm not sure why people are counting him out at the US Open. If he serves like he did at Wimbledon, people will have a very tough time breaking him. At worst, he'd be getting into tiebreaks, and those are basically coin flips. Remember, last year was the first time in over a decade Federer lost in less than 5 at the US Open.

Agreed, but there is a reason he has reached each of the GS finals 5 times. I remember him being written off in 2009 at the FO because he had never won the French and he did. He is playing at a high level now as he himself said.

it's his 2nd serve and his ground game that make me not like his chances.

his 1st serve was clicking today as well as i've seen it in a few years...maybe since his wimbledon run in 2009. and it still wasn't enough to win wimbledon. and a player like nole is much better at returning on hard courts, where the ball bounces higher. same with murray, who i think will get his feet back under him this us hard court season.

i'd love for fed to win another major, but his chances off grass are less than 50% in my opinion. it's been nearly 5 years since he's won a major off of grass, actually, and the field is getting better and better.

Small correction: He lost in 4 to Berdych at the 2012 USO.

On one hand, hard courts like the USO and AO give him a better chance to break others, which is what he needs to avoid tiebreaks.

On the other hand, it gives his opponents better chances to break him too, and he won't keep serving like he did today. This was a once 2 years type serving performance.

Looking at the AO, he's made 14 straight SFs. With a break in the draw, can he win another?

I think the most troubling part of FED's game is his return, he has to be able to get balls in play. Not sure if surface matters as much as the particular opponent.

He'll basically have to serve like today, AND return better, against the good opponents. Or get a break in the draw with an easier matchup.

I like the way he can use the court when he's aggressive, but watching some of those unnecessary slices in the 1st set, I see he doesn't always do that.

Federer said it took him until the 4th set to figure out how to get into Djokovic's service games, and it surprised him that it took him that long, considering how often they've played.

I would only count him out of the French. He should just skip the clay season and extend his career even more. He really does not play a grueling style and has not had much in the way of injury and is still in good shape. He could go 3 more years after this one.

I thought this would be more like the 2012 Wimbledon SF match, but Djokovic played a lot better, especially his serve and movement.

And he did well coming forward.

He (Fed) has peaked in terms of the new racket (incorporated enough feel in his game through practice and match play). He is extremely fit in that it was Djokovic who had to take medical time out in the tough five setter in the final and not Fed.

I can see Fed doing some damage at the USO if he doesn't get spent trying for too much during the warmup events leading up to the Open. The goal is to peak again at the right time like he did for Wimbledon. Go Fed!

^ Federer will have to play Nadal at the US Open (or lose to Robredo so he doesn't have to play Nadal).

Also, the US Open isn't on grass......

Not a big problem for Fed of he serves like he did at Wimby.only issue is the back to back days of SF and final.
