2013 MLB splits:
Runner on 1st - .263 AVG, .728 OPS
Runner on 2nd & 3rd - .263 AVG, .774 OPS
Runner on 3rd - .270 AVG, .768 OPS

If it's so much harder to hit with runners on 3rd, why is the league average and OPS higher in those situations?

Got an excuse for that?

Is it just me.. or did you post that the ops is lower with a man on 3rd? Which is what I said is caused by the sac fly. If you are talking about the difference from runner on first to runner on 3rd.. ever heard of a intentional walk? it happens when a runner is on third to create a situation where a double play can happen.. did i teach enough for tonight?

You are the one that wants to know why the batting average is higher when a player is at third... I told you.. that is also why the ops is lower.... clown.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What? A sac fly negatively affects OBP, as the player gets the plate appearance but doesn't get on base.

So sac fly's still don't fully explain why the OPS is higher with runners at 3rd.

I'd like to know why people are defending a guy who's hitting .208 with 6 runs and 5 ribbies this month?

This guy likes looking at stats.. and has no idea what they mean.. if you dont think that even crap batters get intentional walks when a runner is on third to put a man on first and get the double play.. you are a ding dong.. but I think you do know that.. but are not smart enough to figure out why numbers differ the way they do from situation to situation.

I wasn't aware of anyone touting Harper as a five-tool player. I heard hitter with massive power who could hit for average as well when he hit his peak. Hustler on the bases and in the outfield. Good arm.

I never heard anything about him being a base stealer or an elite defender. Maybe I just missed those reports, but most of what I heard was about his power. And he's shown power.

The average hasn't come, but I think he was called up earlier than he should have been, and he's learning things in the Majors he should have been learning in the minors. But there is an improvement evident in his contact. And the power is very real.

Honestly, he's performing at about the level I expected for his age and given his early call-up. But then again, I'm reasonable.

I don't think he's overrated, because I think he's above average in every facet of the game. And I think he's getting better. And I think he's still about 6-8 years away from his prime.

I am still waiting for him to show me what stat is a better representative of a players contribution in scoring a run than an rbi...

You think he is above average in every facet of the game? Like hitting for average? Or not striking out? Or defense? Or base running? Really? Above average in all those?

The only thing he is above average on at this point is power.. Everything else is very average.. or below.

Never posted that

And if you're going to claim that it's a result of the sac fly, prove it....show how you concluded the precise number to claim that the OPS difference is caused by the sac fly.

I just told you why it is higher compared to when a runner is just on third as apposed to when a runner is on first... scroll up.. my god.. ITS CALLED THE INTENTIONAL WALK. Its done regularly to put a man in place for the double play when a runner is on third.

You weren't aware of that? I find that hard to believe. I had to read/hear/watch this kid since he was in junior high basically. He could do it all! Hit for power, average, great arm, great hands, run with the best of em. (Babe Ruth comparisons for crying out loud) And he was a catcher. Now he's an outfielder, floundering at the plate in a poor lineup(For a team people liked to include with the best teams in baseball coming into the season). While he was hyped more than any young player since probably Griffey, we've got Machado, Myers, Trout, Segura, Puig, etc etc having excellent seasons, but Harper has all the reasons why he's not living up to the pre fight banter. And he's got to start to be an AllStar, twice. Only logical conclusion, he's overrated. (Went 2-3tonight I'm told)

As for hitting with runners in scoring position, how is it harder to get a hit? There are still nine guys in the field, they're still the same guys, and the pitcher is still trying to throw you quality strikes to get you out. If the pitcher is waiting until there are runners on base to start trying to get guys out, he's probably not a particularly effective pitcher.

Sometimes, the infield is drawn in, which helps you get hits on bloopers or ground balls. It effectively increases the size of the holes in the infield and between the infield and the outfield. Sometimes, the outfielders are playing shallow, which leaves more room behind the defense for doubles and triples. And lefties who get shifted can't get shifted nearly as much because you can't leave a runner all alone at third base, or else he'll steal home.

Some pitchers buckle down in those pressure situations. Others fold. Honestly, between all the factors, hitting in each situation is pretty much a wash.

RBI is not the best stat for run producing. It's too dependent on circumstance. The likelihood a guy won't make an out is much more telling (OBP), for example. And remember that run producing is not just driving guys in, but putting yourself into a position to score. When it comes down to it, offense really boils down to just getting on base and making as few outs as possible.

And sacrifice bunts are useless except for pitchers (and comparable hitters). I'm okay with them when only one run is necessary and a top hitters is coming up, as well, though.

Puig should have been an all star over him... Not a Puig fan either.. he is a prick just like Harper.

Not striking out is not a facet of the game. But yes, I do think he's an above average contact hitter. Average to me sits around .250. He's at .264, thus above average. He's still learning on the bases, but I think you can argue his hustle creates more runs than it costs, and the same is true in the outfield. His walk rate is also a tick above average.

I'm sorry, but he can't even drink legally yet, and he still is posting an OPS over .850. I cannot see how that isn't living up to the "elite hitter" hype. He was called up too soon, and he's still outhitting the majority of Major Leaguers.

LOL. this guys is cracking me up.. .264 is above average to you? Really.. i guess nitpicking it may be right around average.. but if you think .264 is above average for a out fielder.. you are crazy... as for striking out not being a facet of the game? Plate discipline isn't a major facet? Really?

Is he out hitting the majority of players that play his position? Including pitchers, catchers, and ss in the mix sure does make him look better huh.

Why some men fall in love with male athletes so much they defend them even when they don't perform is a little scary.. its a good thing not to many women come on this site.

This year, it's not a contest in terms of offensive value between Mauer and Fielder. Mauer is leaps and bounds ahead of him. He's getting on base 40% of the time and even out slugging Fielder. Fielder's in a much stronger lineup, hitting behind a guy who is on base almost as much as he isn't. Of course he's going to have more RBIs. In general, though, their values are about comparable. Fielder's a little down this year, and Mauer's having a strong year even by his standards.

Where did my buddy go that wanted me to explain why there is a higher ops when there is a man on third than when there is a man just on first... I guess I taught him something he didn't know before today.. that most intentional walks happen with a man on third and first base open to get in position to get a double play.. thus increasing the ops in the league when a runner is on third...
