When a runner is on 3rd or 2nd and 3rd, an intentional walk in 2013 has happened 393 times in 6,944 total PA's

393 / 6,944 really looks like 40%

I love stat guys that dont even understand stats.

Wow, that's not even 6%. I'm surprised it's that low, actually.

But Vice, the numbers are right in front of you now. How can you possibly say we don't understand the numbers which are right in front of us now?

This is pointless.. Stat nerds will be stat nerds.. You can always find a stat to base an arguement on... But in real life... Who do you want at the plate with the game on the line. Miggy? Trout? Or harper?

Probably Miggy if I honestly had the choice between the three, but McCutchen is the only Pirate I would take over Harper right now, on that list, anyway.

A number of players have won the MVP with batting averages around or below .300 on the season. I don't think it's fair to cherry pick one month and say that just because a guy's numbers were slightly less good in that month than in other months, stretch run or not, even though they were still among the league's best in each category, and say that's the reason he didn't deserve the MVP.

His team and circumstance cost him the MVP, it was no fault of Trout's.

I cherry pick on that one month because they missed the playoffs. And he did fade. Which was expected, his season was waaaay more than anyone could have anticipated. And even with the late season return to earth it was absolutely outstanding. But he didn't win the batting title and didn't make the playoffs. Those two things happen, Cabrera might not be pushing for his second straight MVP. And he certainly wouldn't be pushing for back to back TCs. (Obviously)

Which is why the pirates will not win in the playoff.

My favorite thing about McCutchen, he actually looks like a Pirate. You put an eye patch on that guy and it'd going overboard.

Believe me, I'll be satisfied to just make the playoffs. But if we had Harper instead of our black hole right field platoon, we'd be in pretty decent shape, I think.

Now do the math and see what that does to ops and ba

Why don't you do the math for once? Why on earth do you expect me to do all the legwork to prove your blanket statements wrong?

Are you planning on admitting you were way off on your "40% of the time the IBB happens" claim?

You're simply just asking more questions, and ignoring points when I prove you wrong

I already showed you the sac flys wouldn't have the effect on OPS like you claimed...you never admitted you were incorrect, then moved on to IBB. I showed you that your IBB estimates were way off in terms of frequency (40%, really?), and you never admitted you were incorrect.

And you just keep asking questions to try to make me run in circles.

Is that not a fairly accurate analysis of what's going on here?

When you put it like that, it makes me have to say, I think Bryce Harper is a very good baseball player, just not the instant super slugger that was talked about for years leading up to now. (Nava, that's not me backing off my hard stance). I'd be pretty satisfied with him hitting 6th and starting in leftfield rather than Dirks.

The media may have called him an instant super slugger, but no one is instant is Major League Baseball. It might have the largest learning curve of all of the major professional sports in the world. Harper is on an expected and reasonable career path, and he's trending toward that super slugger level right now, as his approach is improving at the plate this year. His BABIP is way down from last year, but his batted ball profile is rather similar, which suggests his average should start to regress upward through the end of the year. He's also drawing walks at a better rate than last year, and his strikeout rate is down a little bit as well. These are all positive signs.

They're also all things most players work on while they're in the minor leagues. I will maintain until eternity that Harper was brought up a year too early.

The general rule for hitters is that after 1200 at bats you know who you have. For players called up too early, I think it's closer to 1600, since they have to experience a learning curve in the Majors most players deal with in the minors. In any case, Harper has at least 400 more at bats to show us what he's truly capable of, and a lot can happen in 400 at bats.

I absolutely agree he was brought up too early. He also was the focus of national attention at far too young of an age. And he drew unfair comparisons. At too young of an age, and period. Nobody is Babe Ruth. (And nobody who drew that comparison saw Ruth, making it more unfair) However..... Even if his hype and expectation levels were unfair, after 800+ abs in MLB, he had to be expected to have over 100RBI in his career. He has 39 RBI by driving himself in during his short career. I don't think it's a small thing I'm hung up on. As runs and RBI are significantly more important than any other stat. (Aside from games played)
