Over the past 5 years, 3rd place in the Metro has averaged 100 points, the 2nd Wild Card has averaged about 96 points. So to make the playoffs, you figure the Flyers probably need 64 points from their remaining 49 games. Something like 29-14-6 gets them in. That's a pretty darn good record. 65.3% of the points left on the schedule. Winnipeg, Calgary, TB, and Toronto are the only 4 teams that have managed that so far this season.

So to make the playoffs, the Flyers would have to be a top 4 team in the NHL the rest of the way. The Metro is a little down this year, but the Pens are still on pace for 94 points and had a very slow start. So I think a 96 point target is realistic.

Not trying to be a Debbie downer, just looking at the math. As of 2 weeks ago or so, I said it was no longer worth it to try to use picks/prospects to make the playoffs because the hill was too steep. After two good wins I'm feeling a lot better about the team, but the hill is still too steep to trade future pieces to get in this season. Hopefully we can enjoy the ride a little more for the next few weeks and see where we end up.

Dom Luszczyszyn tracks playoff odds daily at The Athletic, yesterday morning the Flyers sat at a 20% chance to make the playoffs.

The win was good, obviously. But last night the teams in the playoff spots the Flyers want..
CBJ - Won
Pitt - Won
Boston - Won
Montreal - Won

So in terms of standings, all that happened last night was the Flyers have one less game to catch up. That's why it's so difficult to make up ground. 8 points doesn't seem like a lot, just 4 wins, but it's damn hard to make up ground.

No worries. We play those teams a combined 10 more times this season. Plenty of time to catch up if our players are up to the task.

I'm with you Mav, I like what I've seen the past couple of games. And I still believe this team is leaps and bounds better than their record. I'll be ecstatic if they beat the odds and come February they're in a better position to add. But if I'm GM, I wouldn't make the move now. Have to ride it out for a while now, see if the odds improve.

I'm just saying I like what I see so far, don't blow the team up and don't tank for Hughes. We're a fairly loaded team that was playing lifeless hockey for a long stretch. No need to make any big moves if these guys are going to play.

This is my sentiment also, with the exception of Simmer, we need to get what we can for him, I see no reason to resign him. Keep letting Hart get his reps regardless of the seasons outcome. We could realistically still make the playoffs but if we do I hope it's because the team just starts hitting on all cylinders, to limp in would be a disaster IMO because I would hate to see it be a one and done scenario, whereas if we came in smoking hot and could do some damage. A lot remains to be seen. It's only been 2 games so either he plays well and grows and gets better or he is the 2nd coming and takes us to the promised land. Either way is cool for me.

Last year we were 28-14-7 over the last 49. Hopefully the slow start was a product of Hackstol, but then again, he should get credit for the strong finish. So far, I like what I have seen from Hart. He is a good positional goalie and puts himself in a good position to make saves. One of the Preds hit the post with about 2 seconds left last night, but when watching the replay, it looked to me if it was on net, Hart would have gotten a glove on it. He is still so young and he is at the NHL level a lot sooner than I thought. Without him, we lose last nights game.

Ah I was hoping someone would check in to what they did last year! I knew they were good, just didn't know how good. That's crazy that it was that close haha!

Let's hope they get a nice little run here and get us really going. Looks like Hart starts again tomorrow.

The next two games are enormous. Sweep this weekend and we are off and running. If Hart starts Saturday, who starts Sunday?

And we are back.

Getting to watch both Carter Hart games from the DVR, so I could rewatch sections and completely geek out, was really interesting. He is a lot more fluid side to side than I recalled in the Worlds last year or in Juniors...nice to see. He keeps his pad faces and shoulders square (no leeky spots). And he pops right up after a goal with no signs of ill effect. I can't say he doesn't remind me of a younger Carey Price, but he just seems to be a little more athletic to go along with the exceptional positional play. I think with experience and as he learns the league more he will be even more settled.

The other most exciting thing has been the subtle changes in the blueline. They no longer hold the puck looking for sure passes on the outlet, they are passing to zones. The pairings seem to make more sense and be more complimentary. Those who can carry the puck are now free to do so (that was a fight within the team since after Ghosts rookie season). Hopefully this change will carry forward and the youngsters will continue to improve. Who knows...maybe we see Myers this year and or Morin once he is healthy. We could potentially see a blue line of six Flyers draft picks!!

Coots saves us in the dying seconds of a power play and the period from what would've been a frustrating 0-1 hole. The power play still looks God awful, but he pumps one home on the backhand via a broken play out of nowhere.

Ghost and Provy still turning the puck over in our own zone, unfortunately. The lone goal against comes when Provy tries to beat a man by himself instead of going D to D.

Otherwise, it was a pretty decent period of play for us. Game on. I really don't want this to go to OT, so get after it.

Cam Atkinson enters this game with 20 goals and we leave the dude wide open twice in the second period for a couple of goals to relinquish the lead. MacDonald looked pretty guilty on the first and Voracek the second. Not much more Hart can do on these chances.

Down two with a period to go. Let's see if we make a push or roll over dead. What a disgusting way for the period to end on that set faceoff play. Have to let it go and get back after them though. Plenty of hockey left in this one.

That's a frustrating loss on home ice. Looked like we were going to tie it late. We didn't allow a lot of shots overall, but Columbus was extremely opportunistic. Some careless turnovers at or around our blue line just killing us. Hart not really at fault in this one. His goals against were mostly guys left wide open in prime scoring areas.

I wish a guy like Wayne Simmonds would start playing for a new contract and big money instead of floating around the fucking ice like he's butthurt that we haven't re-signed him or that we signed JvR in case he leaves.

I really think if the Wayne Train were fully engaged, this game would at least still be in progress, or we'd have already lost 20 seconds into OT...Lol

Yeah Bob had a huge game for them and the Flyers left a few on the table. Overall the effort was there but you can't let a faceoff set play beat you. They are the ones who need that shit to go their way for once. Can't win them all but they unfortunately need to!

Unfortunately, Neuvy probably gets the start tonight. So, based on that alone, he's either going to get injured or be terrible. It's two points that we desperately need to get back into contention, so you hope for anything else.

Will our boys continue to play hard in front of another goalie? The question has to be asked.

Either way, it appears that we are not quite ready to challenge the top 5 or 6 teams in the conference. Let's see how much progress we can begin to make, because it should be getting better from here on out, not worse.
