RISP seems to be pretty brutal

They're hitting .264, which is tied for 10th in the league with the Mariners. Their wRC+ is 95 is tied for 15th with the Pirates and Cards.

20+ home runs is pretty good for a middle infielder, especially for one with plenty of speed. He's also walking in 13.6% of his plate appearances. He's also the 6th youngest position player in the league at 22.

Not seeing it... at least not just yet. Sale has a pretty decent case, but you have to wonder how many writers will refuse to vote a pitcher MVP (granted that didn't stop Verlander from winning in 2011, and that was with a pretty strong field of MVP candidates). Altuve's having another fantastic year.

To be fair, you're ice-skating uphill if you try and argue against his resume.

You can give all the credit in the world to Rob Gronkowski. Brady's got 4 rings without him.

Same for Edelman. 3 rings without him.

You can say all you want about the Bruschi/Vrabel defenses of years gone by. 2 rings without them.

Everyone likes to point to legendary drives like Montana vs the Bengals or Elway vs the Browns.

Brady going 92 yards, down 8 with 4 mins to go vs the Falcons trumps them all.


You're throwing punches at ocean waves at this point if you try to dispute his resume.

The Red Sox are 5th in the league in OBP, so they're making fewer outs than most teams. What's hurting them is a lack of power and poor production from 3B/C.

Inability to hit with RISP (at least recently)/inability to have productive outs/etc


Could just be my half empty view, but seems like they get RISP and it's invariably GDP, strikeout or shallow pop up next AB.

Before Hanley hit that homer last night, that Jays scrub reliever was mowing the Sox down. He had the old 4 strikeouts in an inning.

Yeah the GIDP is bad. I'd like to seem them try to steal more - could be my imagination (and I know they had the old double steal friday) but as they've slumped at the plate they've become less aggressive on the base paths.


Oh, and age old complaint - if you don't hit great, you need to be at least a semi reliable bunter.

they have been pretty anemic with the bases loaded (.250/.280/.316 with 0 home runs), though it is a small sample size (93 PA).
