The players didn't like Matt Williams. I just wish we could have gotten a guy that players like to play for AND managed the game like a sane person. Is that too much to ask? :noidea:

I thought Matt Williams was a complete jerkass when he played, so I can imagine him being tough as a manager.

No question Dusty Baker is a nice guy and I guess he interviews really well, I just don't know how he keeps getting gigs based on his experience.

I remember when the Padres had the best bullpen in the league. Lockdown 7-8-9 innings. It's how you win games.

I know Baker probably doesn't want to have two lefties back to back, but Murphy is still red hot...might keep Harper from being walked so much if they slotted Daniel up behind Bryce for a while.

Bump:

I wonder if Dusty Baker is going to have any influence on Harper's hitting approach...Dusty is well known for being disdainful of hitters who take a lot of walks and had some issues with Joey Votto in particular. He loved to say that Willie Mays and Hank Aaron didn't go up there to walk, and they are obvious examples of guys who were tremendous hitters despite not having huge walk totals...not that I find anything wrong with Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle (even Bonds before the roids).
It's way too early to make a big deal about it, but Bryce is walking less often than last season (1 walk per 7.4 PAs compared to 1 per 5.3) and his OBP is 55 points lower, although he is hitting for tremendous power (slugging over 200 points higher) and also striking out less often.
IDK, probably silly to say anything after 18 games and you'd guess that Dusty wouldn't be suggesting that the reigning NL MVP change things drastically, but Baker has been vocal about such matters in the past.

Meh. He keeps hitting like this and his walks will come. He's got two already tonight.

Yeah, fucking Harper read my post and decided to make me look like an idiot by taking 3 walks!!!

Since this exchange on 4/26, Harper has walked 20 times (6 intentional) in 58 ABs. His BA in that time is .167, but his OBP is .466 - that's ridiculous. They aren't giving his shit to hit.

Zimmerman's slashing .236/.293/.340/.633 behind Harper. Until he quits sucking dong, Zimm needs to be replaced with Murphy or Ramos.

Ryan Zimmerman with 14 LOB? How is that even possible?

He's like a snake charmer, but instead of blowing a flute deal to make a Cobra dance, he's just blowing dongs.

Baker has to move him in the order.

I mentioned in another thread that Dusty told the press that Harper needs to stay patient and not swing at stuff outside the zone...guess an old dog CAN learn new tricks. There is a Dusty quote from a while back that basically said walks were only good for really fast guys who were going to steal lots of bases.

He did nothing that should be punished as part of the DV policy.

Firing a gun out into blank space is probably punishable elsewhere though.

LOS ANGELES -- New York Mets right-hander Bartolo Colon's historic home run helped earn him earn a Major League Baseball honor on Monday.

Colon, 42, became the oldest player in major league history to hit his first major league homer when he took San Diego Padres right-hander James Shields deep on Saturday.

Colon also went 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA. The first of those wins broke a tie with Pedro Martinez for sole possession of second place in career victories among Dominican-born pitchers. Juan Marichal leads that list with 243 wins, followed by Colon now with 221 and Martinez with 219.
