Coaches are not really graded by wins or championships

Something that I have noticed is that fans don't put coaches on the hot seat for wins, they put coaches on the hot seat based on performance versus rival.

Some examples:

Harbaugh has a great overall record but has only beaten Penn State once and hasn't beaten Ohio State at all. Therefore he is on hot seat.

Pruitt didn't beat Alabama but UT fans have backed off hot seat talk since he was competitive against both Bama and Georgia.

Mark Richt fired for not beaten Florida enough.

Les Miles fired for not beaten Alabama.

Fulmer fired for not beating competitive against Alabama and Florida.

Mike Riley was fired for being a lousy coach.
But he was a nice guy.

Is Harbs really on the hot seat with UM or just pissed off fans vocalizing that he should be?

Richt wasn't fired because he couldn't beat Florida. That was a part of it, but he was largely fired because we had to use stop gap QBs in back to back years, and his message, along with the team had gotten stale.

It was a loss to Auburn that sealed the fate of Les Miles, but what ultimately did him in was the fact that every year he had an uber talented roster with no QB

Coaches sometimes are given a longer leash if they’re able to beat their rivals.

the performance against a rival isn’t going to change whether or not the coach is on the hot seat, it may change the temperature of the seat. But it won’t change the seat.

Two years ago Harbaugh went 0-5 vs. teams that finished the regular season above .500. He's 1-3 in bowl game. He's the only coach in UofM history to start his career 0-4 vs. Ohio State. Gave up an all time worst 62 points to the Buckeyes last year. And didn't get fired. It seems like nothing he does (and he's done alotta nothing since returning to ann arbor as The Savior) will get him fired. Which is funny.

If his name wasn't Harbaugh he would have been fired 5 minutes after the ass kicking he got in Columbus last year.

Phillip Fulmer had a winning record vs. Alabama (10-6-1) and Georgia (11-6). But he was 5-12 vs. Florida.

You’d think a Vol fan would know.

Fulmer wasn't competitive against Saban. Had we not fired him, that record vs. Bama would have gone the other way. Most of those wins were in the 1990s. Similar situation with Georgia. Fulmer beat them almost ever year in the 1990s. Closer to the end of his tenure, Georgia had the upper hand.

Kirk Ferentz lost his first four games vs. Iowa State (1999-2002) and got an extension and a raise! Just sayin'...The Hawkeyes were thinking long term, as he has won his last five vs. the Cyclones! :noidea:

Fulmer faced Saban twice, as head coach at Bama, his last two seasons 2007 & 2008. Hardly enough time to determine whether or not he could be successful against him in the future.

Fulmer was 1-1 vs. Saban at LSU.

He was fired at Tennessee because of the inept leadership in Knoxville.

Tennessee hasn’t been the same since his tenure.

They probably will never have the success they had under him.

Absolutely. There were countless times where I was pissed... not for losing to Iowa or Wisconsin or Ohio State, but because of HOW we lost.

Getting blown out is not acceptable, especially on a frequent basis.

Sure they will. Tennessee was successful long before Fulmer was their coach. They are the 2nd winning-est SEC Program in every significant category: Championships, wins, winning percentage, Bowls, etc. They'll be back, just like Oklahoma finally recovered after some poor choices between Switzer and Stoops. Interestingly, I think Jim Harbaugh could be a very successful Coach at resurrecting Tennessee. I hope nobody is paying attention to this! :)

Tennessee doesn’t have the infrastructure in place right now to produce any kind of success.

The best hire Oklahoma made in the late 90’s was Joe Castiglione.

The right AD, anywhere, who can make savvy hires, with the backing of the University president and Board of Regents members, can breed success.

Tennessee’s past success has nothing to do with their future trajectory.

I’d like to see Tennessee successful again. But they are light years behind Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, and Florida.

Fulmer was 1-2 vs LSU with Saban. LSU beat them at home in 2000 in OT along with splitting in 2001.
