TM has improved under barry , foster and compton became starters under barry , cravens is doing well under barry

BB ran his mouth thinking he is better then he was dunbar is 2 years removed from being a WR and i think he is doing ok , smith is playing like most of his rookie year though

but lets get real the skins have 4 guys who could start on a contending defense , cravens , RK norman and possibly baker

The Giants defensive game plan last night vs Dallas was a thing of beauty and way beyond Barry's comprehension.

Do you believe the Skins have the personnel to run that type of defense?

I know I wasnt asked.

But here is my take. These guys are a part of a very select group of people. Less that 2000 people make it on an NFL roster any given year. While we might not have 53 of the top players in the league, things like tackling, rushing the passer and basic assignments should be doable. I think we have enough on defense that we should not be as bad as we are in certain areas. I think we have the ability to be better, but I think the issue is more about what he coaches are coaching as apposed to the players being that horrid. Yea some guys shouldnt be starting, but to say that we are so talent starved we cant even think about stopping the run..... I dont know man.

Cravens is a rookie & did well almost from the start so I would give very little of that credit to the D coaching staff. Also - the Redskins have drafted quite a few defensive players in recent drafts but many are in mid-late rounds. Are we just resigned to the fact that only 1st & 2nd rounders are going to do well? The offense didn't rely strictly on that & is doing well.

I put this on both SM and the D coaching staff. They are going to have to do a better job both finding the rt players and getting the best out of them while they are on the Redskins. At this pt - whatever - stay with the coaching staff or find someone else, but the current staff damn well better do better & not just blame it all on the players. I am on board w/ rebuilding, but I am not OK w/ say a 5 or 6 year plan. The Redskins have not had a decent defense in a very, very long time & it is getting old.

We tend to get into these either/or arguments here. The reality is that our defense is in the state that it is in because of all of the above. Coaching, player performance, and talent level. All three areas need improvement.

100% agree & that is actually the pt that I have been trying to make. Also - as I alluded to above - SM is not blameless in all of this. He is going to have to do a better job finding defensive players in the draft & free agency.

Yup. It appears that his focus has mostly been on the Offense. Maybe that's because of the talent available to him when it was our pick, maybe its because exciting offense put butts in the seats and eyeballs on the tube. But for the most part, our offense is homegrown. Now he needs to do the same for the defense. This draft must be defensive focused.

Bowles created Arizona's D.

The Jets D suffers from the Jets O.
I would agree somewhat however, the Jets defense blows right now. What Bowles did in AZ is past tense. This is a "what have you done for me lately" league. The Jets defense rivals the Skins defense.

NO! Nor do I think Barry has the bandwidth to assemble the scheme either. We need a new DC also next year.

That was a good article. The trick will be keeping the players with the "fight and toughness."

If you watched the Pats vs the Ravens that was a thing of beauty especially early. ILBs were jumping in the A gap like they were going to blitz and then dropping to the precise spot Flacko's hot read was in. Talk about film study. Give the Ravens credit though too, they changed up their game plan. BB had their number from film study and his guys were executing at a high level. If you like the chess of football it was a thing of beauty.

A closer look at the Redskins’ defense and its struggles on third down

You be the judge . I think our talent and execution is killing what Barry wants to do . Barry has issues but we're are getting beat individually

Good info. JB tried different looks vs the Cardinals with no success. Some of the poor play can be laid on the players not following their assignments. Remember the GB game, Starks TD came on a blown coverage. This has occur all season and here we are at wk 15 and our D still sucks with no change in sight. The article is right, we can't continue to survive like this. We will like all season depend on the OFF. Watch how Cam and company look all world against us MN.

I like Cravens upside big time. But right now he isn't even starting on a bad defense that is really weak at his position. It's premature to proclaim that he could start on a contending defense. But the theme of you post is on point, the defense just does not have many players who would be playing on a good defense.

I truly hope that the Panthers go out of their way to attack Norman. That would be a huge mistake on their part. Why put effort into that strategy when it is so much easier to attack the other members of the secondary? Maybe that is not their plan & this is just a creation of the media.

They are not going to do that. They are going to do what every other team does. Attack us in the middle of the field. Run it between the tackles for huge gains. Pass it to the TEs on crossing patterns where our ILBs and safeties can't cover. Hit the slot receiver one slant routes because our slot CB is playing 10 yds off the receiver. Combine that with Cam escaping the pocket regularly and running for big gains and I see a potential very high scoring game, assuming our offense is playing like they normally do. If they have an off night, we could be embarrassed on National TV once again.

Our best defensive strategy should be to not blitz Cam, but to contain him (I know many will have issues with this as you believe that blitzing solves all problems). He is not an accurate QB. Make him stay in the pocket, press the receivers at the line and see if we can get him to throw an couple of ill advised passes. Once he gets outside the pocket, all bets are off. We are really hampered in this game with Cravens out. He would have been the natural guy to shadow Cam. We don't have anyone else who is fast enough, athletic enough and strong enough to follow Cam and bring him down quickly if he breaks out for a run.

Your text, Gods Iphone.

Do I think we have what it takes to win this game?? Sure. But as I stated else where..... these are the types of games where we proceed to step on our own dicks. I would love to say, we are beyond being every ones feel good game.....

The Arizona game says.. we aint quite there yet.
