I feel the same way about Joe Barry when I first heard that he got the job. I thought it was a soft hire on the part of Jay because he was on the hot seat at the time and didn't want a strong personality on that side of the ball that they could easily replace him with.

I think Jay has proven himself. His offense is prolific, the players love him, and I think he's earned Dan's trust by proving to be right on the Kirk/RG situation.

T. Bowles
R. Ryan
G. Williams

There are going to be some really good D coordinators out there this summer.

He needs more talent, and it may not be his fault, but there will be CLEAR upgrades available, and I think we should pounce on one.

I agree with this. I like Gruden too, think he may be a good coach for a while. But there is nothing to date to show that our DC is the right man for the job.

Wow,, could you imagine Rex Ryan as our DC. Not sure that would be a positive thing or a negative. Leaning towards the latter. However, these retread coaches always find another sucker to hire em. Wouldn't be surprised if Fisher is coaching next year.

I like Rex a lot but don't like him as a DC right now...EGO. I do believe he is a brilliant defensive mind.

Todd Bowles...absolutely.

Gregg...no way he comes here.

Everybody seems upset we don't send both OLBs every play. That would mean blitzing every play...unless you think it is wiser to drop a DT back.

Sounds about rt. Williams certainly would not view DC as high on his list after not getting the HC job several years ago. I just want someone who can help make the young players get progressively better from their rookie year until year 3-4 & beyond. Maybe Barry can do that, but I am just not seeing it. I am much more concerned about that then game day strategy.

Typically, is it the job of the DC to get his players better? I would think their job is the game plan and the calls, but the coaches improve their twchnique.

The guy I wanted before Barry was hired was Wade Phillips. Worked out well for Denver. He did not seem to be a popular choice here. :noidea:

look i am not saying barry is the best thing since sliced bread but the players are about 65% of the time being over matched on their assignments

now if we blitz more we expose our crap safeties and if we rush the typical 4 our up front guys cant bring pressure by themselves

this is what i have seen

we need some young investment in young talent

i like to give a guy 3 years however i am not goimg to jump off a bridge if we let him go

Fair enough. I would hope that he has input in terms of the rest of the staff. In any case the Redskins need to develop youth on the D just like they have appeared to have done w/ the offense. I don't care about the name of those persons - just make sure that it is happening to a decent degree. HTTR

The issue with Barry, and the Defensive coaching staff as a whole is.... we DONT see young talent improving. In more cases we see them regressing under Barry's watch.

Amerson had a killer rookie year, the next year... gone.

Preston Smith... some were proclaiming him as a possible starter after his rookie year... regression.
Breeeland and Dunbar.... the more time they spend under Barry, the more they regress.

We have a pattern forming here. Raw talent got these guys through in their rookie years. But the more time they work under Barry, the less development we see.

I agree 100%. I am all about improving this defense by whatever means possible. I just trust that they will do whatever they can over the offseason in that area. They know more than I do so I will leave it at that.

Also, I cant be the only one screaming at the TV when our defense is supposed to be trying to tackle but instead they are holding the guy up and trying to pull the ball out while they walk him an extra 5 yards for the first down. Turn overs are great, but I think a three and out more often than not would be awesome. We give up more yards after contact than any other team in the league. And i get the feeling its because they spend more time trying to force turn overs than actually tackling.

Yep - almost the complete opposite of the offense where you see guys like Crowder, Cousins and Long getting better & all were mid round picks. Sure a big part of this is their work ethic and talent. However - coaching certainly played a big role in their improvement.

I just want to ensure that not only guys like Breeland and Smith get back on track but also that players like Cravens & any picks moving forward reach their potential & are used in the most effective manner. I guess that Barry is still capable of serving in this role, but it gets harder to believe over time.

Or freaking Whittner with his no armed tackles that more often than not result in whiffs. Perhaps he also makes good plays - I just don't remember them.

I agree 100%. And as you rightly point out this falls not only on Barry but also the position coaches. After all, they are the ones working day in and out with our young players to improve them. Of course, the player does bear some responsibility also.

What does Bowles have to offer other than being an ex-Redskin? His defense in NY is awful schematically but I would argue he has more talent than we do. He did wonders with the Cards defense from the outside looking in or was Arians more involved than we thought? I'm not sure but watching the J-E-T-S this year I wouldn't being doing back flips for Bowles return to DC should he become available?

I too wanted Phillips in DC and was disappointed that did not pick up more steam. There will be suitors for DC next year and quite possibly, one or two candidates on staff as well. (Fewell & Manufsky)
