OK - playing devil's advocate here. If the Redskins can make these type of stops/plays at the end of the game then why can't they do similar during the remainder of the game - at least sometimes? This game was a little different since Philly had the edge at times & 7 of the pts had nothing to do with the D.

However - the Vikings & Browns games (mentioned in this article & involving late game D stops) were ones in which the Redskins led comfortably during a lot of the game. There really was no excuse for them to get the other team back in the game (especially against the Vikings where the D basically fell asleep in the 2nd QTR).

OK - time for the team to add some real talent on D, but also time for them to look at overall coaching and strategy (even if they retain the entire staff). I am not really on board with this whole squeak it out at the end & only worry about scoring 1 more pt than the opponent philosophy. That is just going to be burn you at times as it did during several losses this season. Redskins have to try to not make things so tough on themselves all the time. Maybe that won't be the case this season, but that should be a goal for next season.

Having the Giants personnel on defense would make things a lot easier. Hell I would love to have a player like Sean Lee .... when he stays healthy.

No doubt about it. I am just questioning things so that they can improve the defense in any way possible. Hopefully down the road we are having similar conversations in this area to what is discussed about the offense at this time. A few years ago nobody could have imagined Redskins fans talking about the depth on the O line or having too many good WRs. Would love to see fans stating that the Redskins have too many good DBs or depth on the D line in a few years. One can dream.

BTW - Callahan is a major reason for the Skins success on the O line so coaching obviously makes a difference.

Yeah I was actually referencing another post without quoting it.

You have said this before as have a few others. This is only year two of the rebuild under SM. I also thing Gruden deserves credit. We haven't had back to back winning years in 20+ years. With one more win we can say that. Is it where I want them to be? No. Sure seems like we might be heading in the right direction. :hope:

It’s kind of like a quarterback being called a “game manager”. No defense likes the term “bend but don’t break”.

But that shoe fit the Redskins against the Eagles on Sunday and they will be happy to wear it as it led to a 27-22 win.

The Eagles outgained the Redskins 383 yards to 334. Rookie Carson Wentz was operating the short passing game like a veteran, completing 32 of 46 passes for 314 yards. Ryan Matthews was efficient, running for 60 yards.

RELATED: After near brawl, Eagles fans get vulgar with LB Terence Garvin

But the Eagles got the ball into the end zone against the Redskins just once. The defense had the knack for tightening up at just the right time to force the Eagles to settle for field goals.

Or for nothing.

Philadelphia’s second possession made it all the way down to the three yard line before safety Deshazor Everett, who had played only on special teams until this game, picked off a Wentz pass in the end zone. That marked the first time that the Redskins had stopped a team from scoring a touchdown after it had attained a first and goal since Week 3.

They tightened up in the second half, holding the Eagles to just a field goal (Philly’s touchdown came on an interception return for a touchdown). But it got frightening in the late going after the Redskins scored to take a 27-22 lead with just under two minutes left.

The touchdown was a great moment but the finish by the defense was more like a horror movie sequel; call it Scary Movie IV.

The defense started bend and then bend some more. They gave ground all the way to where the Eagles had a first and 10 at the Washington 14 with about 30 seconds left.

It was the fourth time this year that an opponent has had the ball in Redskins territory in the last two minutes down by more than three points but by less than a touchdown. Previously they had held on against the Ravens and Vikings but they broke and lost against the Lions.

“We have been tested in every area that should be tested in situational football,” defensive end Chris Baker said. “I think this game helped us and let us realize that no matter the situation, if we continue to stick together we can find a way to make the play and win the game.”

This was one of the happy endings. Ryan Kerrigan got a sack and strip of Wentz and Trent Murphy picked it up to secure the win.

Interesting take. However, I maintain that you will not go far if this is the type of defense you expect to deploy. When you live on the edge, it only takes one mistake. Moreover, it stresses out the other 2 units that depend upon you to do your job at least occasionally. I may be wrong, but did Philly ever have one 3 and out yesterday? I can't remember even one.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of how our D is getting gashed on multiple fronts. Just saying that the argument that they have 'finished' more times this year than not (when push comes to shove) can't be dismissed.

What also can't be dismissed is that in many of those games, the defense should have never found themselves in those game ending situations. SO to call someone a hero when the put out a fire in a burning house that they set themselves doesn't resonate to well with me.

look we need talent , some are pushing the coach is the issue however the many of the films i have seen and the breakdowns are not as much schematic as it is individuals losing their match ups both physically and mentally

not getting off blocks , missing tackles , too slow to make plays are physical

mental ones are not taking correct angles , filling the wrong hole , and playing the correct defense meaning someone is blowing the assignment

some is coaching bad strategy

And that is primarily due to the fact that we just don't have enough playmakers on defense. Guys that step up, like Kerrigan did today, and beat his man to make a play on the ball. When was the last time we saw a safety ball hawk on a long pass? We have Ryan and josh on defense that have this ability. That's it. We have 6 or 8 guys on offense that can do it.

This is true: the defense lacks playmakers that the offense doesn't lack. Then again, can anybody say definitely that Joe Barry is coaching to ANY of his player's strengths? The Steelers have an awful defense, but the defensive coach plays zone coverages that play to their limited strength. The cowboys have a bad defense too, but THEY play to their strength. Good coaching makes mediocre talent better. Bad coaching makes mediocre talent on pace to have statistically the WORST 3rd down percentage ever.

You got me wondering that about you. RK didn't bail Barry out. There are serious issues with the Redskins defensive play and Barry's schemes imo. At that point in the game though somebody needed to step up and make a play. That bitch 3rd dn was just around the corner. Thank goodness they were wearing burgundy & gold and kudos it was RK. And that's what it was, RK making a key play at az key moment in the game.

Huh?

If "there are serious issues with the redskins defensive play" then that is on the coaches to make them play better. As John Lynch said, "having inside leverage instead of outside leverage when you run a casino blitz is basic defensive football," as the redskins gave up yet another 3rd down. That's on the coaches.

"...and Barry's schemes...." is EXACTLY what I was saying. RK bailed out Barry, who coaches terribly, and has awful schemes.

I did notice RK dropping into coverawge a few times, we have already discussed Preston Smith matched up with Darren Sproles. I think these moves have to be questioned.

I feel the same way about Joe Barry when I first heard that he got the job. I thought it was a soft hire on the part of Jay because he was on the hot seat at the time and didn't want a strong personality on that side of the ball that they could easily replace him with.

I think Jay has proven himself. His offense is prolific, the players love him, and I think he's earned Dan's trust by proving to be right on the Kirk/RG situation.

T. Bowles
R. Ryan
G. Williams

There are going to be some really good D coordinators out there this summer.

He needs more talent, and it may not be his fault, but there will be CLEAR upgrades available, and I think we should pounce on one.
