Has there been any mention of anyone growing hops on the hoop? I'm starting up a half acre this year and hope to expand to 5 acres plus as time goes on.

I planted 3, with an irrigation system, and watched them die.

Best of luck!

Right now I'm setting up the trellis's and doing ground prep. I have to figure out how to get pix off my phone so I can post them. 180 plants will be ready for pickup 1 Jun and I still have plenty of work to do to get ready for them to go in the ground.

Just click the "Upload a File" button below, then "choose file" and then go to the place you store them on your phone. Select and hit done. It'll bring you back to the page. Click full size, then post reply button. I've never done more than one at a time in any post... not sure if it would slow it down too much or not.

You are the man! I never thought of logging on with my phone. I hate using it but that has to be the easiest way of getting pix onto the hoop. Thank you very much.

I've discussed with @H2S and @Runeman about growing hops.....they may want to get a look at how it's coming along.

The trellis support poles I cut from my property. All were 22' plus in length and are set 4' in the ground. Locally we call them iron wood trees...I don't know if that's their proper name or not. But in the day they were used for fencing and will last many years.

From here I need to finish adding in the horse shit.....till it in. Then top dress it with compost for the new plants arriving on 1 June. Hops are a high nitrogen feeder. I've been adding compost to this field for the last couple of years so hopefully I'm in good shape.

I still have to run the support cable that the string is attached to that the hops plants climb up.

I won't see any production of hops this year. The second season I should expect about a 40 - 60 percent yield. And then on the third season I should see full yields.

We'll see.

What do you believe was the problem with getting yours to grow?

The first year all three Centennial grew, but they were scrawny. I harvested maybe 6 cones in all. The second year only 2 grew and they didn't get far before starting to die. Nothing to harvest. 3rd year nothing...

If I did it over again, I would prepare the soil better. I think the problem was the crappy soil I used for planting. I was selling my house in year 3 so didn't bother fixing things..

Looks like you are on the right track though!

Cool! We've grown some small plants for medicinal uses, but not enough to use in any homebrewing batches. Had to do them in pots, so they didn't get very large and one year they just didn't come back. My assumption is they just starved to death slowly but we couldn't transfer them to the yard.

Good luck with yours...what variety(ies?) do you have?

yeah and no. I've bailed on the pf forum. I got pretty pissed at a couple of tards one night and decided being that pissed was counter productive to why I'm here. But as well..... in NY.....everything is thawing out so between winter clean up and getting ready for summer, there's shit to do.

:D I could do the same....but :tsk: I doubt hammer would be able to support the love of finer smokes....sponsors and all.

I was surprised to see Battle come to the Orange. I would ... almost ... feel bad if SU picked up Thompson as well.

Also....SU is after Omer Yurtseven. I don't think SU has room for both.

taking anything you read in the PF seriously is as futile as believing you can teach your dog how to drive. hell, I think I could teach my dog how to drive easier than changing minds in the PF. place is label-crazy, extremes-oriented, populated by assorted nuts & compromised bedmates.

o mai. so tis, so tis. times ain't changed THET much!

I just posted to the nba draft thread that one of SU's players (Richardson) signed with an agent and is staying in the draft. So it looks like another scholly became avail.

On the website....I just found out how to post a pix....so I doubt I'm much help there. But I'm hustling with local breweries and the hops/hemp relation comes up once in a while. I'll throw it out there.

lol...
was kidding on the website thang...besides
I can't see myself ever posting pics of possibly incriminating activities I may or may not have personal and/or financial interest(s) in.

re: hops. good for you making yourself known to local breweries (local, I assume, is anything within 500 miles of the fields, right?) and hops grower guilds. Interesting that NY used to be the #1 hops growing areas in the country - and is pushing for a comeback.

500 miles? lmao. There's 30ish craft breweries within 15 miles of my house. My half acre won't support even one.

Prohibition and Downey/Powdery Mildew pretty much wiped out NY state hops production. There are things today to combat the mildew issues. And I'm ordering my stock through programs approved by Cornell to ensure I'm starting off with good, clean stock to avoid pesticides.

I would like to stay organic.

fuk em!...let's make JonviDrool Chocolate Lager™...I'll take care of the marketing for just a teensy share of the business (say...um...42%).

gots a brother named Jim in RENO, soon be retired from the replacement window business, just started a cocktail accompaniment products business centered on dilled & spiced green beans (great as swizzle sticks & replacing celery in BMs)...I suggested he name the company JIM BEAN. He chickened out, for some reason, and went with another name.
