I Like Football Less Today Than Yesterday

My grandson, who turns 14 on Monday, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital playing in his first game of the year. He was taken in for a concussion. Tests showed he had a spine compression fracture in his mid back. Now they are concerned about soft tissue, nerve damage in his neck and possibly moving him tonight to Children's Hospital in Denver.

Really takes the joy out of the game. I'm quite certain this will be the end of his football career as it's his second major concussion. I guess the good thing is that he is "sports boy" - whatever sport is in season is his favorite. So my guess is that he will get serious about golf since it's also a fall sport here.

I think that the good thing is that, at the age of 14, the body can heal with excellent results - kids are very resilient with less "miles" on the frames ..

Hey Spring....so sorry to hear about your grandson. My grandson is 13 and has played tackle football since he was 6. Fortunately for him, he's never had a serious injury.

I will pray for your grandson's total recovery and the ability to master a sand wedge.

Thanks for the well wishes - and especially the prayers. He spent the night at Children's in Denver and is currently having an MRI. We believe most of this is precautionary, and hope he is home soon. (He and the rest of his family are living with us while they are building a house.) I'll update later.

Definitely prayers being lifted up George. Thanks for the update. Unfortunately with this sport that we all love there is a terrible side to it as well that we all always hope never have to experience. Golf though is a great alternative! Heck I was playing earlier this summer with a walking boot on from a torn Achilles so even injured it is a sport you can play.

I've been texting with George about this since it happened last night so he knows I feel bad and all that good stuff that yall are leaving, but I just wanted to make one note and since Bryce was in 8th grade I am not saying in this case.

But as much as I love football and liked to play it in HS and college it really bothers me that kids are playing tackle football before the age of 7th grade nowadays... I had two concussion in HS, and still to this day suffer from an injury in my shoulder that I suffered returning a punt in HS.. My point isn't to feel bad for me as I am over all that (cept my concussions might explain some of my mental issues you all witness) for the non KFFLers that was a joke (at least to me. Mingo and SpringStein may say it is true ) and I live with the back injury bothering me, but I just can't imagine with all the injuries just in HS alone that people are encouraging kids to play tackle football as early as age 6.
