Only reason Cleveland is a legit contender is you throw Lebron on the team. Take him off (with just about any other team honestly) and Cleveland is just a middle of the pack Easter conference playoff team.

Ok, if you take him off Miami they werent that good either, better than Cleveland but no championship contender, especially with all the Wade injuries. I think this is common sense.

Arison is paying the tax right now - has been every year since the new CBA. Something Gilbert is finally learning how to do.

Miami Heat, Pat Riley in tough spot vs. NBA salary cap - Sun Sentinel

Also, you apparently don't watch any of the Heat games. But this team was injured most of the season last year. You know, the same excuse Cavs fans use on why they lost to the Dubs.

you know what's funny? this board would be absolutely buzzing if the Heat and the Cavs DID meet in the EC playoffs. kinda was thinking of how they'd match up...

Mozgov/Whiteside-gotta like the effort of both bigs in the games last season, ESPECIALLY with Moz in the finals. both can rebound and defend the rim. depends on scoring as far as which way you'd lean...

Love/Bosh-Love is a good scorer, but as noted, not all that great a defender. imo advantage Bosh...

LBJ vs. -doesn't matter. advantage El BeeJay...

?/Dwade-if he has anything left in the tank Wade, hands down imo...

Irving/Dragic-this would be a very interesting matchup- Kyrie for his natural talent vs. Dragic and his basketball savvy. guess in fairness i slightly lean towards Irving, though in honesty it's a very close call...

Coaching-Spo imo has proven his mettle...

benches- the Cavs had the worst bench in the league last season. 'til i see different i'd lean towards the Heat...

opinions/counterpoints welcomed...

Lebron would be that glaring strength that the Cavs have over the Heat. Deng is a great wing defender, particularly on Lebron, but he wouldn't do the job that Iggy did in the Finals. It all depends on what the Heat finalize the roster with as well as what the new offense and defense looks like. For now, I'll give the Cavs the edge. But as you mentioned earlier, this team goes as far as Lebron takes them. Lebron will be 31 this season and he's trying to go to his 6th straight Finals. That's rough on the body, no matter who you are.

Then you go to the depth of both teams and the argument is really over IMO, at least right now. Plus if Shump can play pretty good defense on Wade and harass him that makes things that much easier. Lets wait for the season and teams to fully form before we talk matchups though. Heats fans say they have the advantage though....bc of Whiteside potential

This is the 15-16 roster btw

This Mo Williams pickup is actually pretty huge. Kyrie needs his minutes played like Wade at least at this point in time and be ready for the playoffs. Wade has progressed over the last couple seasons, injuries wise. Mo can be a starter, he proved that averaging 17 points a game with a 7-game streak that was very impressive. Very underrated pickup, just like the Spurs getting West.

Let's not act like getting out of the East is all that tough. If their current roster is healthy, the Heat could very well end up facing the Cavs in the ECF. Remove Lebron from the Cavs and a healthy Heat may be the favorite to come out of the east, especially if Whiteside is close to as good as he looked last year.

If Whiteside gets away from the stupid fouls trying to block every shot, the league better look out.
He's extemely motivated as well as talented.

Once again, you miss the point. How very typical of you. You were the one who originally made the "remove Lebron" statement.

Agreed. It's definitely a step up from Delly. Sad though that at the age of 23, you already have to start monitoring Kyrie's minutes. To Pop's credit, he didn't start monitoring Manu and Tim's minutes until after they were 30.

It's about having more depth. So when injuries do come up it is still like they are almost at full strength. It mostly helps in the playoffs when the main guys rest. It doesnt make James do less, it gives him more rest especially in the regular season. So he can go hard deep in the playoffs. He really hasnt had a team very deep before in his career. He either had no help, good help but no much depth, or injuries have been a concern.

I agree in premise, but if the players are being thrown together without any real time on the court together during the season, then it doesn't work. Obviously they have all season to address that.

And you don't think the Heat championship teams with James had plenty of depth?

We could easily go 8-9 deep.

James now wants to go 12-13 deep which is fine, as long as you have your owner by the short hairs and can make him pay 250,000,000+.

POINT STILL IS, that if you use this approach now and don't win, it's going to work heavily against you moving forward when everyone can add and you can't.

Tax offenders can't even do sign and trades.

So, you guys better hope for the most part that this core is good enough.
I look around the league and rate it as highly questionable.

We could remove Wade this year and still be very good.

The game is stupid though, because whoever has James, has James (until he leaves).

Your inability to be even slightly objective re: the Cavs is pretty ridiculous. You come off like a 5 year old talking about how he can beat up Superman.

Same guy that when I pointed out that Kyrie was injured during the Finals, instead of agreeing, told me to 'call him when we are back'.

You're analogy is perfect.

This is pretty much exactly what happened with the Lakers after the last title. They had an aging (Kobe, Pau, MWP, D-Fish) and injured (Bynum) roster and had so much money tied up that their only option to improve the team was trades. They had no room for FA's, especially max FA's.

Once Stern vetoed the CP3 trade, they were effectively fucked and stuck as a team that was good enough for a 2nd round exit every year. When the Dwight/Nash deal blew up in their face, it left them where they are now, a full scale re-build.

It was/is worth it because they made 3 straight finals appearance and won 2. If the Cavs don't win a title in the next season or 2, they likely won't be able to.

Cavs had the best record in the entire NBA after they made the 2 trades in January. After that point they rolled the West to the tune of a 15-1 record (only loss OT @ Houston). With the development and steps up KI and Thompson, and Delly made last year- combined with Love/KYrie/LeBron all working to get on the same page- the Cavs did not have to make one single move besides retain the team they had to be favorites to win it. Adding Mo helps- and getting Varejao back helps, and they are not done yet.

Their is a reason the Cavs were the best team in the league from January on- they were deep and extremely talented. The only thing that can derail them is bad luck. The Heat and their fans are insane if they sit hear coming off a year they couldnt make the eastern conference playoffs and try and say they are legit contenders. the Heat are NOT legit contenders- not until they prove that they are more than a lotto team without LeBron. Period.
