Report: Browns have been in touch with Washington about No. 5 overall pick | ProFootballTalk

This is being reported by Ian Rappaport, who's a pretty straight shooter. Note that he's not hedging his report with any qualifiers but is making a straight statement that the Browns have sought to trade up with the Redskins. Having said that, he's also stating the Browns have been in touch with other teams as well. So, take it FWIW.

The Browns are looking to trade up with someone. Who that may be, if at all, is yet to be determined.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns have had conversations with the Redskins about trading into the top five.

Cleveland sits at Nos. 12 and 19 in the first round, while Washington has the No. 5 overall pick. We suspect the Browns would be targeting a wide receiver, perhaps West Virginia's Kevin White. Per RapSheet, the Browns have "touched base with most teams" selecting in the top-ten picks. Cleveland is not one player away from contention, but this isn't an organization that has made many sensible moves since Jimmy Haslam took over as owner. Nothing can be ruled out.

If Fowler, Williams, and Cooper are all gone. I say yes.

I'm gonna need more than 12 and 19 to move off of 5.

And how many points did the rams win their trade with us by? Lol That value chart is outdated and is just a guide. That being said, 12 and 19 should land us Ray and Peat. Not bad.

That was for a QB kbso83432. It is different. The Browns want Cooper or White. Peat wont be there at #19. Ray at #12. What!!! Way too high. Dupree is the better player.

I think Peat will be there. Could be wrong. Than go Dupree. I'm not tied to any of the edge rushers. I'm on record for wanting a trade down first. If they aren't going to draft Scherff and pick a tackle or guard in the 2nd and really fix this oline, than go White who could be our answer to the Cowboys Dez Bryant.

I see your point about QB'S being different, but there are many other examples of that chart not being followed, especially when it comes to high 1st round picks.

We won't get 12 and 19 without also throwing in a lower round pick. I'd offer a 6 and settle for a 5. Or give them colt McCoy.

Than I'm staying at 5 if Cleveland ask for more.

Under the draft value chart, the #2 pick we got in 2012 was worth 2600 points. That year, we gave up our #6 pick and second rounder, which still left us about 500 points short. That's basically the equivalent of a high current year second rounder or a first the next year. By giving up our first rounder in 2013, that should've closed the deal then. But we added another first rounder in 2014 to complete the trade.

Did we get value out of the trade based on draft picks? We clearly didn't. But you've got to adjust things based on circumstances, not the least of which was the fact that we were looking to draft a franchise QB. Another factor in this deal was that Cleveland was offering more than us. So, we got a "discount" of sorts, and that was based on Fisher's relationship with Shanahan.

If you move to 12, Scherff, Fowler, Beasley, Cooper, and White are gone. Personally I would need more.

I guess I am in the minority on this, but I'm asking for a pick in 16. Those are some very good players we are passing up.

Scherf could be there. Yes those guys are gone but if he wants to upgrade the oline than Peat and Flowers come into play at #12.

With Cleveland, the price of admission is their two first rounders. Should we agree to a lower round pick to seal the deal? Sure, why not? But if we get those two picks, we get three picks in the top 39 selections. With those, we could select someone like a Dupree at #12, an OG / OT with #19 and the second rounder. We can any assortment of linemen such as Flowers, Clemmings, Collins, Cann, Tomlinson etc with those picks. By doing that, we can provide someone to complement Kerrigan and shore up the dreadful right side of our o-line.

My biggest fear is we trade down and draft Peat or Flowers and they turn out to be solid, but nothing more. Meanwhile Cooper or White are lighting it up. I guess I should qualify my trade down by saying as long as we can still get Scherff.
