With tighter enforcement of no contact after 5 yards the physical teams like Seahawks,Patriots,49ers are gonna be screwed

Patriots' Belichick tells of 'Redskins' connection | Boston Herald)

One thing the Patriots have yet to master: how to scale back downfield contact on receivers. The Redskins were instructed on the tighter enforcement of the rules last week, but New England won't get its visit from the officials until next week. That was evident Monday when New England's cornerbacks where grabbing and pushing well past the five-yard limit.

"I don't know if they've got that briefing yet, but we definitely did," Redskins receiver Andre Roberts said with a laugh as he walked off the field. "And we kind of noticed that today."

That was reported throughout the day yesterday. It was also noted that Rivas was not breaking the rule he was using his skill to cover Redskin receivers. On the other hand Browner was breaking the rule on almost every play.

This is a renewed position on the 5 yard chuck rule this year because of how Seattle defended with their DBs last year. As the playoffs progressed last year the refs put their whistles away and the league doesn't want to see this happen again. Browner played for the Seahawks last year although I believe he was hurt during the playoffs.

Remember last year everyone was talking about the need for bigger more physical corners? This re-emphisis on the chuck rule will make those big guys dinosaurs quickly.

This new take on the chuck rule is gonig to force corners to actually play coverage as I think they are gonig to start hitting DBs hard for basically blocking the WR if they are within the 5 yard barrier. As some one mentioned, the league does NOT want to see another Super Bowl where Peyton Manning gets basically shut out. This is going to put a premium on the pass rush and make things a bit easier on our WR group as it has been noted that Jackson and Garcon do have a bit of trouble with the bigger more physical CBs.

I think that's the idea, but I'll believe it when I see it. How many times have we seen the league put an "emphasis" on a certain rule, only to call it tight in the preseason and then completely forget about it as the season goes on?

GUess we wil lsee how it goes. All I really would like to see is the refs being consistent. One mans holding is another mans just playing with intensity. Thats what really needs to change. They need to be consistent.
