Dalton is not worth the time or the monetary commitment.

Has he ever gotten past the first round of the playoffs?

It is not like they made this huge commitment to him. At least that is word on the contract as we still haven't seen the numbers. This is a move of "We know we don't have that franchise quarterback on our roster at this time but we have a guy that can keep us competitive while we find that guy." This gives them a 2-year window to maybe find that guy while still seeing a young guy develop and maybe see if something happens that takes him to that next level. It is not like he is that bad really. He has some games where he has shown he can take over and go out and win it. Hasn't done it in the playoffs obviously but during the regular season they have put the team on his back and he has responded well at times.

I can see that. At the same time, it's not as if going out and getting a QB that gives the team a significantly better chance of certainly winning a title is easy to do. And there have been some fairly mediocre QBs who have won titles without being a main reason that their teams have done so.[/QUOTE]

Yeah, but did those teams pay their QBs like stars? When you give a guy $100M in a salary cap World he needs to be a main reason the team wins. The devil is of course in the details on this one...

I give you Joe Flacco. Mind you he got a $100 million dollar contract and preceded to follow it up with a 19 TD 22 INT 48 sacks and 59% completion season.

Listening on the NFL Network today they seem to think it more a 2-year deal. Everybody sees the 6-year $115 million thing and freak out. Those numbers mean jack squat for the actual contract. Essentially after 2-years they can cut ties with him with very little to no dead money hurting them. This gives them a chance to groom somebody to take over for a couple of years or if they don't find anybody keep him around. It is not like he is the worst quarterback in the league. He does do pretty decent at least in the regular season. Plus AJ Green seems to really like him and said he won't play with any other quarterback. I could see this as more of a let's keep our star player happy in AJ Green kind of thing while we lock him up long term.

LOL. Do you really think AJ means that?

Horrible comparison. Flacco is 10 times the QB Dalton is. He also put the team on his back and had one of the greatest playoff runs in history for a QB. Also, not like he was the problem with Balt last year. Didn't we all seee that year coming? Where was that D? Ray Rice? TE basically out for the year.

Its the nature of things with the QB position now. Dalton might not be Peyton Manning, but teams are going to have to make that choice. Pay our guy who we know is at the least god to above average, or roll the dice and see what we can get from a new starter.

Agree with that theory, but it's not applicable here IMO. Dalton is not above average. He is the type of guy you play hard ball with and say goodbye to if he doesn't like it. Nothing at all special about the guy.

The defense was still decent for Baltimore last year. They really were not the issue. The offense though was terrible from the run game to the pass game. Yes he was missing a weapon or two so that hurt. Flacco I think has a lot to prove this year as well though. He showed he has to have some weapons around him last year to be successful. When those weapons like his TE went down and losing Boldin he just couldn't do hardly anything.

Also that playoff run for Flacco. Yes he did well but he had some miraculous things go his way such as throwing into triple coverage and somehow his receiver is the one to come down with it or a safety mistiming his jump leading to a 70 yard touchdown type thing. He caught some major breaks.

The Bengals have made the playoffs three straight years with dalton as their starter. And I realize he has never won a playoffs game. But he wouldnt be the first QB to get a mega deal without a single playoffs win to his credit. the Bengals made the smart move, especially if they left themselves a decent out clause. You also have to think, what happens if the Bengals didnt do this deal but managed to make the AFC title game this year??? The cost of this deal skyrockets.

Spin it all you want. Team was a huge underdog and he flat out carried them to the title. 11 TDs and 0 Ints!!! Plus almost 300 yards per game and an average QB rating of 117. Sorry, you can't change facts with what ifs...

Flacco has been money in the postseason since 2010. That is why he got paid. He's very similar to Eli. Both are very streaky regular season QBs who show up when it counts most.

Bottom line he is not a good QB. That trumps all generalizations about what QBs get, what other QBs have signed for and scenarios that may or may not happen (in this case, won't happen).

Mediocre arm, mediocre decision making, holds on to the ball too long

They are going to regret this

I'd rather have him than to be like some of these teams who have been searching for QB's for years - he's not great, but he's pretty solid and he has a great WR in AJ Green who he has chemistry with - they just need to get a playoff win this season in order to get on the right track

6 years / 96 million (17 million guaranteed) with 19 million in escalators based solely on playoff goals.

Plus, the team can cut him after 2 seasons if he is still not winning playoff games with little hit to the cap, meaning that AJ McCarron has had two full seasons to learn the playbook, and practice against the Bengals top 5 defense including their stable of 1st round CB's (Newman, Hall, Jones, Kirkpatrick, Dennard and Nelson).

From what I was reading online, forget where it was at, the cap is expected to potentially double within the next 3 seasons, which means if Dalton earns this contract, his contract will be grossly underpaid.

Bengals management made a great sign even if Dalton doesn't win another playoff game, because after two seasons, they can let him go and start with McCarron, and they still have plenty of money to resign AJ Green and Vonteze Burfict to long term contracts.

Why does everyone act like Dalton is an aged veteran. Everyone seems to forget that he has only played in the NFL for 3 seasons... Let me say that again... 3 SEASONS... Don't give me that "russell wilson did it" crap. Nothing against RW, he is going to be a good QB as well. But it's still quite the accomplishment to have been in the playoffs for the first 3 seasons of your career. He definitely has room to improve.
