Source: Aqib Talib wants top-of-the-market deal

New England Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib wants to be paid as a top-of-the-market corner in free agency, Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports. This according to a source. Since the Dolphins signed Brent Grimes to a four-year, $32 million contract, including $16 million guaranteed, that baseline for this class of prized free agents has been established.
With that in mind, it seems unlikely the Patriots could keep Talib from free agency with an offer of anything short of Grimes’ neighborhood. It’s possible the Patriots wanted Talib for a less risky three-year deal, perhaps in the range of $7 million per year, but that’s well shy of Grimes’ mark. Since Talib has thoroughly enjoyed his season and a half with the Pats, he might take something of a discount, but it’s got to be close.

The Patriots have made Talib a priority since the end of the season, maintaining conversations with the 28-year-old’s camp and conducting a meeting during the scouting combine in Indianapolis. In that sense, the Pats have made their efforts to orchestrate an extension.

This pretty much seal it that Talib should not even be a blip on the radar for the Skins.

What Talib wants and what he gets are two different things Shark. Do you know how the Grimes deal is broken out?

Grimes deal numbers likely wont post before 4PM. Most contracts go to the NFLPA and the league at COB which is 4PM EST. And it usually takes 24 hours before its entered on the NFLPA site, and another day before its out in the world from there.

And you cant seriously think any one is going to get Talib for anything less than the deal Grimes just signed do you?? Talib is gonig to push for MORE than what Grimes got. And even if we got him for $7 million a year, I think thats too much money for him.

I'd still consider Talib, even make him an offer, but he's guaranteed to refuse it if he's looking for that much...at least until nobody else offers it to him.

I think Grimes' contract is severely back loaded b/c he is only guaranteed 16 million out of the 32. Talib is going to want more guaranteed up front money. So if we guarantee him 14 million in the first two years I think he would sign with us. Its all in how the contract is worked.

Again I will ask... why is it OK to do this with some one coming from the outside who will likely always be on screw up away from suspension. But when this same type of contract is suggested for our own.. its out of the question??

Personally I dont think Talib is worth that kind of move because he is one strike away from a long suspension.

I already answered you. talib is better than any defensive player that we have. Plus you cant comment on the CB market without seeing the guts of the Grimes deal

And so was Haynesworth, and Archuletta, and Bruce Smith, and Atogwe... and the list goes on. Smart teams allow their draft picks to develop, even if it does take more than four years and one contract. The not so smart teams do what we constantly do. Draft guys, if they arent super stars in their rookie contract, well we try and replace them with another teams super stars. Rinse, repeat, reload.

By the way, here are the Grimes numbers.

4 years 32 million

6 million signing bonus
Base salary year one 2.5 million fully garunteed
Base salary year two 8.5 million with 7.5 million of it fully guaranteed.
Base salary year three 8.025 million
Base salary year four 7 million

So even if they cut him in year three in effect they will have paid him $8 million per year period. Because the contract contains 16 million in fully guaranteed money. So worst case for them its 2 years 16 million which comes out too

[Drum roll...........] $8 million per year in real money no matter how you slice it.

And in reality $17 million of it is guaranteed because no way do they cut him year two and pay $16 million for ONE year of service.

Get used to it. Its the nature of the beast going forward. With the new 90% cap spend rule, guys are going to get paid and paid well. At most teams are going to be able to roll over around 10% of the cap from year to year. But as the cap goes up, salaries are going to go up even for guys you might not consider "elite".

Is there voidable years in that contract? If not guaranteeing a 30 year old CB 8 mill a year is crazy. Hall gets 4 million, he is not worth double than Hall. I guess we stole Hall. I would rather have Hall than Grimes. They are both the same age. Horrible deal for the Dolphins. Horrible. There front office has to be the worst. Elerbre and Wallace last year and now this.

NO voidables, no out clauses. Basically 16 million guranteed if he ONLY plays this season. $17 million total if he plays through 2015. In 2016 they could release him, but will have already paid out $17 million. His cap hits are $4 million in 2014 and $10 million in 2015. And as i have been pointing out, Talib is going to want a better deal. So think along the lines of say $21 million guaranteed in the first two years. Of which $18 of that ill likely go against the cap over those two years. Forget about the total value, is he worth what could be $9 million a year in cap space for the next two seasons??

Grimes is not even close to the CB Talib is. Plus Talib is younger. I guess Talib is going to hit double digits for yearly salary. Yes I will pull out if we have to guarantee Talib 21 million in the first two years. The Dolphins ruined the market as always. Wow!! Grimes!! I would rather have D. Hall.

I been trying to tell you guys, this is the way things are going to work in the world of the new CBA. Teams have to spend the money. Even if they could have gotten Grimes for 1/4 that contract... going forward you are going to have to spend it some where. And I think positionally you are going to see a shift towards bigger and bigger contracts period. Three years ago $100M for a QB of Romo's ability was unheard of. Now teams are prepared for the fact that a QB is going to be no less than $80 Million on the deal with as much as 40% guaranteed. Kaepernik is asking for $18 million a year.. and he will get it. Riley will get low end $5.5 a year on average and I seriously think he gets a little better than that. Rak when all is said and done will get $10 million a year with $25 or so of it guaranteed IF we get him to a long term deal.

The only bright side to all this is, the few teams who are tight against the cap at the moment are teams I have no problem with them not being able to do anything.

How is Riley going to get 5.5mil when Butler is getting close to 7? I think riley is going to want 7-8mil a season. If this is the case we should be extending Kerrrigan and Williams. I rather put the money into those guys then these bums.

All things considered its actually not a horrible deal. They keep one of their own. One less thing to worry about going into next year. It was a little steep. BUt I think thats only if you are thinking in 2005 cap dollars. Over all he is taking up less than 5% of their cap this year, and will be about 7% next year as well. Raks tag is roughly 9% of our total cap... so there is your real math.
