Rak and Riley Update

As I have stated, I have been beaten into submission. But I do have to ask, why would you be disappointed if Riley actually got a deal on par with what Ellerbe and Lee got last year, and by all accounts what Butler was asking for in San Diego?? Hell there are atleast three ILBs who made MORE than $7 million last year and didnt out perform Riley. Maybe if we actually had a pair of safety's worth a crap, a D Line that could actually apply a LITTLE pressure on the QB, and an offense that didnt hang the defense out to dry until the 4th quarter, Riley, RAK and Kerrigan might have been considered more than average. But when you got 3 out of four LBs dropping into coverage half the time, safetys who couldnt cover my grand mother, and almost no pass rush on a 3-13 team... every one looks bad.

This is why Riley is not worth Ellerbe money. This is just one play but his over all hustle and determination on this TD catch is pathetic. I'm sure I could come up with 30-40 other plays to critique Riley but he is just plain average man. Having said that, I could also critique 5-6 more players on this play including the DC.

You are going to call the man out for doing his assignment which is contain on the run where he was flowing to where the play would have gone as a run. the ball gets thrown on the other side of the field and its his fault?? Show me ONE ILB who would have been any where near that play without a blitz being called?? You guys are ridiculous, you would gladly pay an injury prone player if he is considered a play maker (and came from another team first). Your ridiculous Shark. Riley has back side on this play action play and yes, I would expect him at some point to read pass and disrupt Carlson who released late. I'm not saying he should have made this play, I'm saying he never read pass until it was way too late and his hustle once he realized what was going on was not what I expect from a guy seeking $6-$7M dollars a year to play the position. In all likely hood it was Doughty's guy but even he got sucked in on play action. At least Doughty hustled once he realized what was going on. "Instincts", Riley has none...
Btw, Riley is not better than Ellerbe under any certain terms.

Apparently based off of what we have seen so far last year and this year, $7 million is the average salary for an ILB. But I guess Riley wasnt injured enough or didnt miss the requisite number of games to rate that kind of salary. If he had two more INTs, but missed five games, some of you guys would be all in on paying him.

Dude, I would not have paid Ellerbe, Lee or Butler that amount because all three have injury histories. Then again I also wouldnt pay $250k for a car either. Now considering that aside from rookie contracts, most starting ILBs are playing for $5 million or more and the last three contracts for Injury prone ILBs has hit $6.5 to 7 million a year... its simply the cost of doing business and I do think you pay to keep your own. Im not drooling over Sean Lee and his broken Vag or what ever this months injury is. Play maker dont mean shit if you miss 1/4 of the season on the regular.

If he is willing to return to his familiar place and his starting position, he can return for $4-$5M which is what he is worth based upon his play the past 3 years. Film doesn't lie...

Dude Riley isnt the first player I have outright said the team is being stupid over. He isnt the first guy that the fan base has felt was easily replaceable. I have listed the possible replacements, and pointed out the flaw in any of them actually being worth more or a better solution. Fact is any one we could get for cheaper than Riley likely is a guy we HOPE can start, or a 2-3 year rental. And even the 2-3 year rentals are going to cost roughly the same as I expect Riley to get.

Accept that apparently he is only asking for $5.5 a year. He is also five years younger than Jackson so also should have a longer shelf life.

Well, that's not too bad. Riley isn't necessarily a game-changer at MLB. However, he is solid and is a very hard hitter. He's worth keeping in my honest opinion.

I think thats the real problem. Every one wants a game changer so badly. No one seems to want to think about how much the defenses game would change if we have two new ILBs both trying to learn our defensive calls and termanology on the fly. We are going to have enough holes to fill without creating more if its avoidable.
