Maybe I'm just that out of touch, but what rumors and coaching offers? As far as I know the Saban to Texas rumor is the only one that has gained any serious traction. Besides like I said, it is also the only one that makes sense. Outside of the NFL (which I doubt will ever seriously look at Saban again) there is only a handful of schools that can pay Saban the kind of money that Alabama does. And that's why the Texas rumor gained so much traction, because it is one of the few.

Saban had offers from other schools/NFL teams (he would not say which schools or teams although I know the Browns were mentioned) either earlier this year or last year. I can't remember. And he went on record as saying that he thought about it, but that Bama is where he wanted to be.

I stand upgraded, I do now remember the Browns rumor. But let's be honest, part of why he didn't go is because it was the Browns. Romeo Crennell only makes $1.75 million, far less than Saban makes/made at Alabama. And I will make a slight amplification to my assertion, Saban also likes to win. So he isn't going to go to a job that might pay a lot of money, if he isn't winning. Which is another part of the Texas equation, not only can they pay a lot of money, he can also win championships there. All other things being equal, Saban is just as likely to have the same kind of success at Texas as he has had at Alabama. So if Texas is willing to separate itself with dollar signs, I have no reason to believe Saban won't jump ship.

Saban stayed/went back to college football because the part of the job he enjoys is developing kids. AKA, the actual coaching part.

Let me put it this way, if Saban's commitment to Alabama was so strong, why did the contract extension raise his salary by about $1 million? He already was the highest paid coach in college football, and that was a big jump. If he truly cared about Alabama, he would have down played the rumors with the Alabama folks and signed a deal that at most had a nominal increase.

Fact is he milked this situation to at minimum get $7 million from Alabama (higher than several NFL coaches), and maybe more from Texas.

Uh, probably because he's not stupid. If you could use the possibility of leaving to get more money out of them even if you had no intention of leaving, wouldn't you do the same?

That was me and I stand by it. Texas won't hire some guy who has never won more than 8 games like USC did. You don't hand the keys to a guy who hasn't proven he can drive a car like USC or Texas. Your hire just might turn out to be great. It sure looks like a gamble though to everyone on the outside.

You mean like they did when the hired Mack Brown whose best finish prior to being hired by Texas was 8-3 (9-3 after a bowl win) at UNC?

As for "everyone on the outside", most that I have seen and heard say that Sark to USC was a great hire.

Yep, Texas has really "shown us how it's done". They go through an embarrassing "is he leaving or isn't he" because they don't have the balls to just cut him loose, then they don't get Saban, now Mack resigns and Texas is left with having start a search all over again.

And here I thought the best way to do it was to target a few coaches, talk to them to figure out the best fit and then hire him. Silly me.

But thats just it, they are not equal. What Saban has at Alabama he will not be able to get at Texas. That one thing is control of the program with no outside interference and no administration interference. He has that at Alabama. He even has so much control he locked out the Greeks and their free tickets for a couple of games because they were leaving games early and emptying the student section. He has that kind of control, which he could not and would not be given at Texas. Mack didnt have that kind of control and Saban requires that kind of control to coach his way. So all things are not equal and that one thing is a big part of the picture(almost as big as the money aspect you seem so fond of bringing up)

I tried to say that to Texas fans a few times during all of this. The only person Saban answers to at Alabama is Mrs. Saban!! At Texas, he'd have fatcat boosters thinking they were going to be golfing with him and discussing the program and his coaching.

You cant tell anyone anything about Saban and his possible reasons for wanting or not wanting to go to Texas, they all know him better than his own fanbase and boosters. He doesnt fit the programs needs in terms of the style of ball he coaches and the style of Big 12 ball. He would have wanted full control(complete and undeniable control) of the football program and its facilities. He would have told them to shove the LHN and its demands up their ass. boosters he would be polite to, but would not give them the time of day unless he felt it served his programs purposes.

Mack Brown did way better than 9-3 at UNC. The firing/resignation was handled poorly. The coaching search will be done well. The Saban rumors were internet bluster and our own admin tried to quell the rumors with public statements saying there was no direct contact with Saban at any point by the school. You can't help the media and fans from speculation.

P.S. There is an entire thread of non USC and Washington fans giving a WTF for your hire. You just choose to ignore it apparently.

Texas fans were not saying Saban was coming to Texas. Everyone of those threads was started by somebody else. Every Texas fan that I know (myself included) said that we did NOT think he would leave Bama.

Keep your mouth shut and your ears open and you might learn something. All agents take advantage of open coaching jobs and the possibility of their client (Saban) leaving. It doesn't mean they were ever going to leave but the school will either pony up or not In this case a few things had happened. Texas A&M had just given Kevin Sumlin a huge raise paying him $5 million and some change annually. The other is he has not won squat. Alabama has a great coach that has won 3 out of the past 4 NC's and almost a 4th! When Texas A&M gave that contract to Sumlin they changed the market and Alabama was smart enough to not play games and accept it especially with who's their coach. If a coach who hasn't won a thing is getting close to $5.5 million which is almost what your accomplished coach is making what you going to do? What? No need to answer..,most people know! Not sure why it bothers you Saban might just love it at Alabama? But, then again, when one reads your post it's hard to figure out why you think half the things you think?

Really? What about '93 10-3, '96 10-2 and '97 10-1? ... and that included playing the at the time super hot Florida State, which won NCs in '93 and '96.

:agree: It was all the non-Alabama and Texas fans saying it. Auburn fans were loving it and saying he was gone. There was one, who is a troll in disguise IMO, who kept making posts that would basically say he was leaving but would always leave just enough of an opening so he could deny that. Now they have to worry about their own coach going! They will talk about just signing an extension but Texas could buy that out in a heart beat and I do believe if they want Malzhan they will get Malzhan! :suds: Enjoy the ride if he becomes 'one of the names!' :suds:

I'm just glad it's over. Me and Codaxx may have been the only Texas fans on the PLANET that didn't want Saban to begin with.

Not true, I didn't really care for Saban coming to Texas either. I was more like if he did, ok, if he didn't, ok. I was also on here stating this the whole time: READ MY LIPS, NICK SABAN IS NOT GOING TO TEXAS......

AMEDNMENT:

Fixed! I am amending my above post. I meant all the non-Alabama fans and non-Texas fans. It sounds like i was saying all the Texas fans thought he was coming. I think most wanted him but they weren't saying they thought he was coming.

I actually figured that's what you meant all along. AFA me, I didn't think he would leave Bama and didn't really have an opinion on if I wanted him. His methods might not be agreeable to all Longhorns.

I think the next choice as the Longhorn HC will be a bit of a surprise.
