Did anybody else really want Bochy to pinch hit Renteria for Panda when Cox brought Venters into the game? Especially from the right side, you could kind of see a panic "I have to swing at the first pitch no matter what" moment brewing in Pablo's head.

It's easy to say that in hindsight, but yeah it probably would have been a good idea.

Maybe now Bochy will know to try that if Panda gets up in a similar situation and a lefty comes in.

Panda is dead to me. I will be very disappointed if he is starting for us next year.

Agreed, it's not just the huge decrease in BA or power, it's the mental mistakes he makes so often. The guy couldn't be any dumber out there unless he was Velez. I would love to see it if the Giants could package him and maybe Peguero and/or Neal to get David Wright next season. Pablo still has a great amount of trade value and the Mets should know at this point that they have too much bad cash invested. They should rebuild and plan on finishing 4th or 5th in their division next year, so I could picture them selling off their guys that are expensive and have value.

Exactly, easier said in hindsight. I wouldn't mind some more micromanaging when it's warranted though. It would have been nice for Boch to pull Panda to the side and say take any low pitch until you get a strike. If you see a pitch that you can elevate, have at it regardless of count.

Ouch, that's pretty harsh msg, lol. For me, Panda's future with the Giants will come down to this offseason. If the kid works hard and loses 35lbs or so and WANTS to try to hone his defense at 3rd base and try to get a little better with plate discipline, I'll be happy if he's starting next year. If he comes back as Fat Panda, I'd use him as trade bait.

Who second guesses a HOF, and the reporter was wrong anyway?!

I did in the GDT thread, based on how pablo and ross looked in their first ab against lowe. Still think it was a mistake not to pitch to pablo, then lowe admitted they should have just pitched around ross with timmy on deck. Bob Brenly, in real time, questioned that sequence as well.

That's just it, Bochy could pull him aside and say I'll give you a cheeseburger if you lay off the low ones, and he'd nod and say OK boss and go out and FPTOM anyway. You don't think they've been telling him how to think up there all year? He's not capable of adjustments.

It's not the extra 50lbs on his gut that's the problem. It's the 5 lbs between his cute panda ears.

Please trade him while he still has value. He is at best another Pedro Feliz, and we can always get another one of those.

We saw him make adjustments last year, so he's capable.

I don't know man, I still think Bochy/Muelens could do some more in-game coaching for specific at bats that warrant it.....but maybe you're right.

No, but the 50 extra pounds on his gut have made him a worse fielder this year in my humble opinion and will continue to deteriorate his defensive game as he ages.

I'm not against trading him, I'm just willing to give a guy who put up a .330-25-90 line some time to adjust. It could be a case of a trying year emotionally for the kid and a possible sophomore slump to boot. I can't remember who said it, but that's why you give a kid like Hinshaw chance after chance. You can't teach 90+ mph fastballs, you just have to hope he eventually learns how to throw strikes consistently.

Well, in 2010 he either lost the ability to keep making them, or he got readjusted to and has reached his limits.

He will never be 2009 Panda again. Like all opinions I could be wrong on this, but that's my take. 2010 Panda is who he is, forever. And to be fair, 2010 Panda is not total garbage. He's a 7 hitter. But other GMs might still see a 3 hitter in there and we should oblige them.

The thing is, I don't even mind if he EVER gets back to 2009 Panda. If he can get to be a .300ish hitter with 15 bombs and 75rbi's with Feliz type defense, I'll be more than happy (but he's got to lose weight and take some more reps at third to get to be Peter Happy in the field).

I think that's a stretch. I think .275/.310/.400 with 15 bombs and leading the league in FPOMs and DPs is all he can do, with adequate D.

A guy like that can hit 7th and not hurt you too much, but I think he's worth more in what he can bring back in a trade.

Bingo, I think there's a chance that he gets it together with the power, but I don't think we'll ever see him hit above .330 again. Most of the GMs (probably not the ones in the NL West that've seen how horrible he has been this year) will know his potential is greater than this season. They'll see the Giants having a poor offense and think that it could be due to the hitting coaches and think their coaches could turn Pablo around. I think we could either package him with a couple of B level prospects to get a proven all-star player from a rebuilding team, or we could get an A level prospect from a team that wants to compete next year. Each year he doesn't hit at least 20 HR with a .300 avg his trade value will go down, so the Giants need to make a move quickly.

Bottom line: he's getting himself out - it's nothing the pitchers are doing to him. Frankly, I don't know what to expect from Pablo next year, but I know he's still capable of squaring up almost anything thrown at him when he's totally in balance.

For all I know, you may be right. All I'm saying is, I'd like to see how the offseason plays out. See if the kid is serious about his future. If he is, I'd like to give him another chance. If he isn't dedicated to making himself better, trade him.

Fair enough. I'm just not sure he's capable of getting better no matter what his dedication. As gp said, he's getting himself out. Can he stop?

I think it's better than the pitchers knowing a fatal flaw of his. I mean did you see the way he hit Latos' high and outside fastball? The guy lines up pitches that were never intended to be lined up. There's talent there.....he's a bad ball hitter.
