Bret Bielema spent much of his B1G Media days appearance talking up the possibility of a Ball heisman run. He talked about how the O-Line was excited for the chance to block for a Heisman winner and everyone associated with the program wants the increased attention.

To go along with that, the university has unleashed a campaign. Here is the website with the well thought up slogan "This fall belongs to Ball." There is also an official twitter account, and video. This is the first time I can recall us going all out for a Heisman campaign in the preseason, so that tells you that they are very confident that he will have a great year.

I never understood the point behind these "campaigns". The whole point of the award is supposed to be based on the players performance on the field, not what the coach of the kid has to say or what some PR department has plastered all over their respective college. I know VT has done this in the past as well, but I just think it's a waste of money.

Just another way to add to the excitement.

its sad that schools have to start "heisman campains", we all know that the Heisman no longer goes to the most outstanding player in the country as it should, its skill + popularity contest. Having a "campaign" for the Heisman is a slap in the face to what the award used to be, and to those who won it in the past based on their production on the field, and not the publicity and media awareness that his school got for him through his "campaign"

edit: just saw Taz's comment....yeah what he said, lol

No, it isn't. Teams try to market the player to the committee so he wins, and then they use that as a way to make more money from fans/alumni and attract better talent down the road. Which is unfortunate, because I agree with Hokie on this one - let the season stand on its own.

And I'd be VERY surprised if Ball wins the Heisman this year. He won't match last year's stats because Wilson was a terrific threat in his own right and that made defenses have to respect the PA pass and PA keeper. And I don't feel our squad this year is good enough to win enough games to keep him in the Heisman race without those same numbers from last year. We'll likely win the division pretty much by default, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 8-4 or 9-3 year instead of a 11-1 or something.

Of course I'd be perfectly alright with being wrong on this one... GO BALL!

I think these "campaigns" are stupid, especially before the season has even begun.

Earn it on the field, not a media blitz.

Except that we've also been shown time and time again that preseason or early season hype is helpful in getting votes. Long story short, if two guys both have great seasons, and one of them was at the too of preseason watch lists while the other was not, I'll bet you can figure out who wins the trophy.

RGIII had a ton of early season hype after that game against TCU on national television. At the end of the first week, I think it is safe to say that he was the #2 favorite (behind Luck).

I pretty much agree with everything you said. I said it short and sweet, but the excitement keeps the fans in the stands and sells jerseys. I don't care about the Heisman. I just want them to run the conference undefeated.

Hey, man, I'd love to see them run the table too, but if wishes were fishes, then everything would stink. Little drama makes the highs better.

At least it would if we'd ever win the big game...

I pretty much agree with what you just said. All hype and no substance.

Padded stats and no real talent. A slimy coach and no real class.

Ever Dayne's last season they seem to have so many of those heart breaking mistakes happen right at the worst possible moment in the worst possible way. I still can't believe how the ball just stuck to the ground on that Abbredaris fumble. WTF?
