I'm pretty confidant that any cap changes from what LeBrun's reporting will probably take effect at the end of next year.

see i dont think doing it that way is fair.. you could see teams that already have over next year's cap committed in salary.. i think it would have to be an across the board roll-back so that everyone keeps relatively the same cap space.. otherwise you could end up seeing next summer's UFA's being left unsigned because so many teams are already up against the cap or already over it

It's still early, but the two sides wrapped up meetings today and say that they are actually discussing real issues. A statement from Bill Daly:

@saraorlesky
Statement from Bill Daly-"We had two productive days of meetings with the NHLPA & the Players, concluding this afternoon at about 1:45 pm...

Daly cont: "A number of important issues were raised on both sides of the table, all of which will be discussed more thoroughly... (cont)

Daly cont:..as we get deeper into bargaining. We are pleased with the level of engagement and look forward to meeting again next week."

According to Newsday's Arthur Staple the Isles are done for the Summer other than resigning Matt Martin.

Their payroll will be a bit over 48M. I think it's safe to say Wang & Snow believe the Cap floor is going to be lower this year. Since they know more about the negotiations & what the owners want than I do I guess they could be right.

One thing I do know is Isles fans are beyond fed up. The Isles acquired Visnovsky for his cap hit & signed Brad Boyes, Matt Carkner & Eric Boulton. Hello DRAFT LOTTERY!!:mad2:

@renlavoierds: NHL proposal to players:
1-reduce players hockey related revenues to 46% from 57 %.
2-10 seasons in NHL before being UFA.
3-contracts limited to 5 years
4-no more salary arbitration.
5-entry-level contract 5 years instead of 3

the starting line has been drawn.

This is gonna take forever. That's a huge drop in cap. HUGE. 2 and 5 are pretty asinine too. We're not gonna start on time. No way no how.

I always find it extremely difficult to sympathize with owners in these situations. They have legitimate beefs in many situations, but asking for those types of cuts when the league is bringing in more money than ever before...that's just hard to agree with. Obviously it's a starting point, but that's so far away from what the players will accept, that this is going to be a long battle. WHY didn't they start sooner? Every day is a waste now.

none of these are game changers though. it's just a matter of numbers.
I would assume the main thing they want is a higher % of revenues.
so for every extra % they get, they can "grudgingly" concede one of the other points.

I do find it odd that ALL of this is essentially writing language to protect the owners from themselves.
on the same day as this comes out, we have a rumoured ridiculous offer in the works to an over-the-hill (or at least at the top of the hill) Shane Doan.

don't want huge contracts? don't write huge contracts.
don't want 10 year deals? don't write 10 year deals.

also, I am surprised there isn't language to widen the salary cap range (ie. lower floor)

Having a lower floor would certainly help things...because so many guys are inflating the market because they're overpaid by teams striving to meet the floor. Then their deals are used as comparisons.

With the cap nearing or surpassing $70M, how much do we want to lower the cap floor? If it gets too low, outside of the revenue sharing agreement what's the difference between a "cap" and pre CBA times? The goal here was to bring parity and allow small markets to be competitive, widen the gap too large and small market teams that are already struggling will fall right off the map.

Brooks at the ny post is claiming they want the cap to be 4 mil over the mid point and the cieling be 8 mil under the mid point. Not sure what the mid point is, but that's 12 mil between the cap and the floor.

The owners are absolutely insane. 11% drop is crazy. That and 10 years til ufa are just ridiculous requests.

The 10 year UFA is the one that really jumps out at me. Most guys are going to be 30-32 years old at that point. Seriously? I am having trouble even seeing both sides of that one.

There has to be some give & take. I understand this is probably a first proposal. I can't see the players agreeing to any of these proposals. They will find a middle ground. What that middle ground is at this point is anyone's guess.

I think it should go (but what the fuck do I know?):

1: 50%
2: 5 seasons
3: I agree
4: I agree, a contract is a contract.
5: Keep it at 3 years.

Are you sure you want #2? Seguin would become an UFA at 23. Good luck keepping him. By the way LoweBellini don't approve either.:D:

I think the CBA has to protect the owners from themselves. Not that I feel a lot of sympathy for them.

An owner could be frugal and try to keep the term and lengths of his teams contracts down but he or she has to worry about what other owners are doing as well. Its wise to limit your signings in both dollar amount and in length but if you have a young very good player up for a contract you know he will want what other comparable players are getting. If one or two other owners are throwing around huge and lengthy contracts it will reconfigure the salary model for the league.

And oh yes, some games will be lost this year.

All this posturing, extreme negotiating tactics (ten years before UFA, huge revenue sharing cuts, five year entry level contracts) is ridiculous. EVERYONE knows they are playing games, just fucking meet in the middle and get it over with. The NHL is struggling already compared to the other major sports, another work stoppage, even a small one, would be a huge mistake.
