Had no rooting interest. That offensive foul call was atrocious.

Probably technically correct call, but man the timing

Well that’s my issue

It’s not called enough in the first 4 minutes of the game

This is why I push back at all the ref haters on here.

The defender was around the edge of the screen to get to Buekers. So the screener leans out with her hip and extends her elbow to make contact.

That is absolutely 100% an illegal screen.

That gets called in the first 4 minutes and nobody says a word about it.

We just don’t like seeing a whistle end the last possession of the game like that.

But what happens if Buekers catches the ball and is able to get into the paint because of the advantage gained from the screen?

Not making that call also impacts the game in a way that isn’t fair to Iowa.

People in general need to be more realistic with refs.

In this situation, they are getting roasted after making the CORRECT CALL because people don’t like the timing.

Impossible job.

Most of the time you see an illegal screen, it’s really not the fault of the screener. That applied last night. Bueker rushes it (likely because of the time component left) and doesn’t allow her teammate to get set as she attempts to use the screen.

It’s definitely a foul. I’m in that group though that says this is a play on but I do admit that your analysis is dead on. My thoughts on that stem from game score and situation. I don’t think any fan of basketball wants to see that kind of call decide a high stakes game like last night. And I agree with your conclusion that moments like there are why it’s so tough to be an official.

Texting with my wife’s cousin this morning who is a girls basketball official for high school and lower level college ball. She says she would have made the call. She had the exact same situation earlier this year in a Div III game. She said she doesn’t like having to make that call but she said the other side of that is would it be fair to Iowa if Beucker gets loose on an illegal screen and gets a clean look at a game winner. Like @tlance she attests to the fact that if something is a call in the first quarter it has to be a call in that spot. She pointed out that the crew had whistled 2 other illegal screens similar in nature earlier in the game so the crew had established much earlier that they would be whistling that action.

Not sure if it matters to anyone but she really doesn’t like Clarke at all. Doesn’t like the way she conducts herself on the court with the constant chirping to officials so she’s not playing the homer here in defending the call.

Good insight

I think most people hate that call simply because of the spot just as the Virginia Auburn game I posted about from 5 years ago

I've never agreed with the "you can't make that call in that situation/at that time/let the players decide the game" narrative.

A foul is a foul no matter when it happens and a player making a mistake by committing a foul in a crucial moment is no less "the players deciding the game" than a player committing a turnover, missing a defensive rotation or missing a shot.

Which was clearly a foul

They should be using the Purdue/Tenn game from that tournament

Or how they ignored Jerome’s double dribble before that foul in the final four

He was looking great with improved velocity. That just means they will get a head start for a guy or too. Maybe Joey Cantillo. Gavin Williams on IR is really weakening their rotation.
