Wait Ober sucks?!?!

No shit, he last started 11 fucking days ago. There was an all star break, The corpse of Maeda got a start and Ryan/Gray got 2 starts. ALl before Ober pitched again.

Unreal the way this team is run

Oh and Encarnocion Strand just hit a pinch hit go ahead 3 run homer for the Reds. Falvey needs to just flat out be dead.

Ober had a tough first, but settled down nicely. Finally the offense is getting to work. We are going to need that, because as evidenced by these first few games, the elite pitching was and is not going to continue.

I did not know that Steer was in that deal too. Just wow.

Encarnacion-Strand and Steer for 1 1/2 years of Mahle- who was hurt. 9 starts

Ober is really good. Limits hits a lot. But having him sit for 11 days was stupid. We are lucky the Mariners are morons and ran into two outs.

OPS+ update

Julien 153
Arraez 144

What a trade.

Gray, Ober and Ryan pitched as well as they can- highly unlikely they finish with a combined 2.50 era like right now.
Posted this on June 10th.

Since then:

Joe Ryan went from a 2.76 ERA to a 3.77 ERA. His ERA has been over 5.00 since then

Sonny Gray went from a 2.28 ERA to a 3.16 ERA. His ERA has been about 4.5 (a little more) since then.

Ober went from a 2.61 ERA to a 2.74 ERA. He has maintained his pace.

Pablo Lopez- who I did not comment on at the time- has been remarkably consistent from month to month

April: 4.70
May: 4.25
June: 4.46
July: 4.30

Maybe Kwan and Gimenez have turned the corner- or have just gotten hot and will slip back.....but both have .387 OBP's in July.

Kwan is at a .878 OPS in July at Gimenez at .917....need that to continue if the Guards have any shot at the postseason considering the state of the rotation.

Naylor at a 1.223 OPS in July....that WONT continue. lol.......though season avg. of .875 (after starting at .612 through end of April) is pretty nice.

I think about .850 or so for the rest of the season is very doable for him.

Bibee, Allen and Williams have been pretty solid- not great- but they are never allowed to pitch deep into games. Combined they have finished 7 innings twice (once by Allen, once by Williams). Bibee has not even pitched into the 7th. Combined ERA of about 3.5 with about a K per inning.

Woof bad loss for Guardians.

Twins just have to win 1 of the next 2 in Seattle for the split to have a acceptable week. Losing .5 game while playing 4 in seattle and them getting 3 in PItt is more than acceptable.

Lose both and its disappointing but not the end of world. Somehow win both(maeda v Castillo is ehhhhhhh) and we really got momentum.

6 games isnt enough of a determination but the Guardians biggest worry should be if the Twins offense can build off this and stay competent rest of the year. If it does(big IF) then ya'll are in big trouble.

But Seattle has thrown 3 great pitchers and we have worked the counts big time. Got them out of the games early enough and took advantage of the pens.

Polanco coming back. Hopefully Royce within the next month. If(again big IF) they can stay healthy now and/or Buxton figures things out even remotely. Lot of promise.

Looooooooooooooong way to go. But good to guarantee a split in Seattle.

I mean- from an outside standpoint I guess- but I would take Naylor and Ramirez over anyone on the Twins offense.

Obviously the biggest concern for the Guardians is SP. It is not even close. When you lose Bieber and McKenzie- and 4/5ths of your opening day starting rotation- you are in some big time trouble.

The rookies are pretty good- but they have season innings limits and game pitch limits which has also taxed the bullpen in a big way and we are seeing the consequences of that lately.

What do you mean you guess lol

The Twins for all their offensive flaws are objectively a better offense. Not one executive in baseball would choose the Guardians. As the teams are currently constructed.

Julien>Naylor.

Ramirez is and always has been amazing though.

Julien has 148 career at bats.

He is batting .318 with a .394 OBP and .968 OPS right now.

I would be willing to wager he finishes with an average under .290, an OBP under .380 and an OPS under .850. He is hot right now for sure---- typical small sample size.

but- again- time will tell who is right.

It is interesting how you say the Twins offense is better and SP is so much better but they are 2 games up despite the Guardians 2 aces- one not pitching, and one pitching hurt until he was shut down.

I wonder what it would look like if Ober was out for the season, and Gray had been pitching hurt most of the year and McKenzie and Bieber were both healthy. Standings would look a LOOOOOOOT different.
