Odd Russell gets penalized for the era he played in but not Wilt.

I already mentioned Russell was lucky enough to play with many damn good players. Much more than any other of his era. Shows how great Red was at judging talent.

And Elgin Baylor's a bad example. He was a 6-5 SF. Not a PF or C.

If he's so overrated why has no player had his number retired?
Because Wilt dominated on offense. Dominated just like he should have.

Lacked refined skill? He carried a Rockets team to the finals in his second year. After that Sampsons body disintegrated and he spent so many years under horrible rosters that KG would blush at the thought.

Olajuwan had an elite 13 year run that was for the most part squandered on bad teams.

Haha.

No.

Carried them?

Ralph Sampson was there and still playing at an all star level. That team was about the twin towers. They had a couple other really good players too.

John Lucas, Rodney McCray, Lewis Lloyd, Robert Reid were a really good top 6.

Had some decent bench depth too.

You ever watch highlights of young Hakeem (or should I say Akeem) trying to dribble?

He didn’t have the dream shake yet or the touch on his shots. He was just a monster athlete starting to figure things out.

Hakeem was very good for 13 years and great for 5-6.

Kareem was very good for almost 20 years and great for 10.

Even if you make the case that Hakeem’s peak was better (it wasn’t), Kareem’s peak was just so much longer.

Malone did join a Lakers super team with Gary Payton. He just Maloned hard in the playoffs.

Malone was far past his prime then, Reason I mentioned those two players at in 1997 was because they were both All-NBA first teamers.

I don't blame old superstars trying to get a ring with a team as a role player, but KD was in his prime when he joined a 73-9 team

The mark of, what is greatness? it's the pinnacle of your sport. The argument always has this guy or that guy based on rings, stats, etc but the real mark, the unchallenged measure is simple, the sport you're in changed BECAUSE of you, no other reason. If the sport has to change to accommodate your play, you should be considered the greatest since nobody else can challenge the metamorphosis of the sport.
I can only think of 1 man in basketball that had such a profound impact on it, and after watching the NBA for just over 50 years I think I could in all honesty say, Wilt Chamberlin was the best player I saw and the one who fits that description of greatness

NBA is currently the way it is because of Shaq. They allowed zone defense to try and stop him. Led to the rise of the perimeter game we have today.

Which was crazy, you didn't need new rules to stop Shaq, you only needed Mark Masdsen

Steph Curry deserves mention for that too

Well Wilt was arguably one the best offensive players ever and dominated smaller guys? Why couldn’t Russell do that if he was athletically more superior than most of the athletes? I’m sorry if are only averaging 12 ppg vs that competition than you don’t belong in the top 10.
You need to be elite at both sides. Wilt, Shaq, Keem and Kareem were all elite on both ends of the floor. Russell was an amazing rebounder and defender. He doesn’t deserve the spot.

He changed the game and the greatest winner ever but that doesn’t mean you need to include him in your top 10 imo

It wasn't just that dream shake. That entire series was making a point on who the real MVP was. He destroyed him. He also destroyed Shaq and Ewing in the playoffs on that 2 year stretch. Early 90s was a bad time to be in the playoffs as an elite center.

To this day, Shaq calls him "Mr. Olajuwon" because of what Hakeem did to him in that series.

Maybe .and the game benefitted, not changed. Rules were not implemented because of Shaq. Shaq was a damn good center and big man (I can't really say I ever saw anyone like him )
The game is different for sure, 3pt line makes a huge difference and aids in a lot of stats being inflated.
If I were to suggest anyone else over Wilt, I'd have to give that to MAGIC. Magic was the BigO, Pistol, and Doctor all rolled into one. Others may have had a better single facet of the game but Magic had it all. A well-rounded player someone if you wanted to build a dynasty around, he would be the cornerstone.
I'd take Magic over Mike any day for that.

Allowing zone defense was almost exclusively for Shaqs dominance. Zone defense favors defending the paint, but allows shooters free reign. They capitalized and the game changed. For sure not as big of an impact as expanding the paint, still changed the game for 1 player.

I also think the absence of Jordan led to rule changes. Only reason I can think of to remove hand checking is trying to produce the next Jordan.

The response...

1. Michael Jordan
2. LeBron James
3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
4. Magic Johnson
5. Kobe Bryant
6. Bill Russell
7. Wilt Chamberlain
8. Larry Bird
9. Shaquille O'Neal
10. Tim Duncan
What's wild is 6 out of the top 10 had significant time with the Lakers

I think the rules changes had a lot more to do with what the game became in the 90's than anything to do with MJ.

Not much respect for Jordan. To me he was a product of advertising and mega endorsement before the game itself. I had conversations with Joey Crawford when Jordan broke in and the mandate was let this guy have the calls, he's going to transform the game and save a dying sport. They built a whole new NBA around him and his talent was no better than Magic or Bird at that time. Most people don't know the half of it.

I'll give ya the change without argument knowing it was a cosmetic change and not a rule change. I really don't have anything bad about Shaq or his play and am not trying to belittle any achievements or asterisk any awards. Lets just say we have reached an understanding and loved watching the game.

lol

Wrong. It was a dying league when Magic and Bird entered.

They saved the league. MJ took it global.

ChatGPT4 is an idiot.

Yo ChatGPT, who are top 10 Rock Bands of all time?

So they just chose to give some random guy endorsements and advertising and this random dude just became the man we know today as Micheal Jordan? The absolute luck of this random person being picked and him suddenly being able to dunk from the free throw line, etc etc is astounding.
