I want to convert this year. I know you can convert from gas to the electric heat pump but does that cut off your gas fireplaces? do any of you have any recommendations for what brand is best?

Long as you have a direct line from your gas meter to the fireplace you'll be fine (and I can't imagine why you wouldn't but...). Ditto if you have a backyard BBQ hookup. They just cap the line that goes to your furnace.

Brand-wise, just stick with the more well-known ones. Trane is pretty solid, my office uses one that's 10 years old and the only issue we've had is a breaker burned out this winter.

I'm still not entirely sold on them being better - if we keep getting winters like the one we just had you're probably going to spend more on auxiliary electric power than you would've on gas, and if not the pumps tend to go after 10-15 years of use.

One thing I will just say, do ALL. YOUR. RESEARCH and make sure that if you're going for the tax credits you've done everything you're supposed to do to get them (including disposal methods of old equipment, etc.). Don't rely on the guy who stands to make 5 figures off you to get all that in order for you and be caught holding the bag.

My limited experience, maybe 2 cents worth...

Lived in a rental for while in Vegas, house had heat pump/AC unit on roof that provided great AC, but ironically poor heat. I'm sure units were old & cheap, but I guess new ones are much better.

Not much to add to BBB's post above except that I have had a Trane heat pump for 12 years now and it's been operating trouble free in that time. I have had it serviced annually and it just keeps on humming along nicely.

I think it's between 100 and 150 dollars - I have a service call for the heat pump coming up, I'll let you know
