The Plan… (Actually, the ONLY one that makes any sense)

Now that the season is over and Washington once again faces yet another off-season in search of a QB, here’s what they must do! Washington has to understand what’s needed and they already have plenty of evidence pointing towards what type of QB makes this offense go in Taylor Heinicke. He has the heart of a lion, can and will move in order to extend plays and if necessary, scoot under duress. What he isn’t… is a force multiplier because he lacks the pedigree and physical tools to make everyone around him more dangerous. So, what they need is a force multiplier with the positives of Heinicke and better tools.

No more attacking the problem with more problems in the form of has-been talent. This means silly experiments with the likes of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Carson Wince and known backups are over. You’re NOT smarter than the rest of the league and if you were you would have better win/lost records to prove it. You don’t! Forget about Aaron Rodgers, Bratty (sp), Derek Carr, Jimmy G or hoping to find another Kirk Cousins… been there done that, and when you had him things weren’t any better than they are now. Physical evidence tells us that there are currently 12 teams in the NFL with a winning record. 10 of them start QBs acquired in the draft. There are plenty of blown QB draft picks, but the data pretty clearly suggests that getting your QB in the draft is preferred. So how do we get there without costing an arm and a leg to move up in this draft AND possibly, if necessary, put the team in a position to finally draft a high-end talent next year? (2024 draft) Clearly, my historical posture on drafting QBs screams objection to getting later-round QBs like Howell and Washington would do well to focus on drafting QBs in the first 2 rounds from here out IMHO, whether my plan works out or not, just as long as they actually warrant that draft status. Why? Because you’re drafting pedigree over a long shot, a hopeful developmental player which is what you get in later rounds.

THE PLAN…

First step… rid themselves of the Wince albatross and offer Heinike a fair but below-market contract to stay, if he bolts, he bolts but never overpay for a career backup. Then understand what you have with Sam Howell whose claims to fame thus far is being better than the two desperate fellows Rivera fielded before he got his chance in the season finale. Honestly, I’m not overly impressed with Howell but he did earn the right to compete for the job next year. The question now is… if you’re ridding yourselves of both Wince and Heinicke, who will he be competing against? Well, Ole’ Sty is here to answer that question for you and this brings us to…

Next step… trade!! Immediately inquire if the Bears have any interest in trading Justin Fields. If they have any interest, be open to it and see what it would take to get him. (I’d trade our 1st and something mid-round next year(3rd ??) for this guy) If we can get him for a cheaper price… say a player (Perhaps multiple) and a non-first-round draft pick, I’m open to that as well. Right now Chicago has the 1st pick in this upcoming draft and may be interested in selecting one of the two young gun QBs or trading with Houston and then selecting one of the two young guns.

If there is no interest in parting with Fields, send a 3rd (2023) or 4th2023 (not both) and 4th2024 or 5th (2024) (not both) to the Green Bay Packers for Jordan Love. I understand that he’s unproven but that’s a key part of this plan should they not be able to acquire Fields who in time will prove, especially with the weapons that we have here, to be the best QB of his draft class, Lawrence notwithstanding.

With the acquisition, your QB room becomes Fields/ Love, Howell, and possibly Heinicke* (read on for more on Heinicke)

Yes, I’m well aware of and willing to risk the acquisition of Love knowing that there is one year of team control (2023) remaining at 4 million dollars, plus that fifth-year option that will be in the $20 million range in 2024.

Additionally, with or without Love, this team absolutely must draft Hendon Hooker in round 3 or 4 if he’s there, but ONLY if there is no deal for Fields. With the addition of love there’s still the unknown and I see Hooker as a solid second-round talent who will drop because of his injury status and add a level of competition and excitement to the long-suffering QB-starved fan base.

(*I honestly don’t think that Heinicke will remain because of cost) For those of you salivating for Will Levis, here’s my perspective. While Levis is two inches shorter and approximately five pounds lighter, his NFL comparable isn’t Josh Allen but… wait for it… Carson Wince!! Neither of these types of players are force multipliers so, no thank you!!

Best case we have Justin Fields with his added dimension to run and a very powerful, accurate arm taking the field with weapons unlike any he’s had since entering the NFL. OR Jordan Love, Hooker, and (IMO) the long shot Howell all vying to prove to be “that guy” and you’ve increased, actually tripled your chances to have found “that guy” at QB all at a very low price, even considering the 5th year option that comes with Love or the injury status of Hooker.

Worse case… You’re finally off of the trade and pray for other teams’ cast-offs to be sprinkled with the football gods' restorative holy water and on track to do what so many have been calling for on this site, drafting one until you find your guy. Appropriately, without Fields and if the three alternative QBs all fail, you’re likely in a position to draft either Mike Pennix or Caleb Williams in 2024. To me, the biggest drawbacks to this plan will be their costly love and a possible willingness to overpay Heinicke, plus a short-sighted unwillingness to trade for Fields or Love, which ultimately forces the Commanders to select Wince II (Levis) or Hooker earlier than what the plan calls for. Equally important, if all goes well with the Fields-less plan, who will be in charge of their development? Hopefully, it’s NOT Rivera or anyone currently employed by Washington… I absolutely hated what they did with DH and fear that all of these guys will suffer through the same unprofessionalism that got him out of D.C.

To be honest, as long as Rivera and Co. are around we will never know if any young QB can be developed properly.

I need time to warm up to this idea but it is plausible with a new OC and hopefully new QB's coach. Offensively we need Olineman and a more dynamic pass catching TE and this offense could be explosive with Fields at QB.

Thanks, The plan has to be focused on the offensive side of the ball this off-season. Fields is a pretty accurate thrower but his main targets weren't very good and truly nothing in comparison to what Washington currently has.

Rivera and the team aren't offering the right incentives to potential candidates. What they should be offering is the chance to replace him!! LOL!!

Nor would I. I’d draft my own. In fact, there are maybe 2-3 qbs in the league right now I would give up a 1st for. Mahomes, Allen, maybe hurt…..after next year. Need to see another year from him to prove this season wasn’t a fluke.

i like what purdy is doing but he isnt available . in fact he was getting the SH treatment in SF before the injuries to Lance and grap . look i am not trying to be down on SH or overly high on fields . i am saying i would roll the dice on him because he has mobility and he has the arm and we have tools around him . tools he or SH will have to rely on

One of the biggest problems facing every Washington team when trading for either a veteran or the idea behind getting someone like Purdy. You DON'T get the coaching that made them good, you don't get the supporting players that made their job easier, and you certainly don't get a managerial staff that knows what they are doing!!
