He’s AJ Feely. He serves his purpose this year and then some team desperate for QB gives you a 2nd round pick for Mr. Irrelevant.

Rick Spielman is currently unemployed. If some team gets duped into hiring him, then they may be able to flip him there.

we both know the goal was championships when that trade was made. Thus the lucky remark.

SF looks strong for a run as long as Purdy doesn't turns into a TO machine.

Definitely. The Niners were gambling that Lance would be one of the young stud QB's like we are seeing with Josh Allen and Justin Herbert. I think that they still believe in Lance because he's got the talent. However, it gets harder and harder to believe when he's had so much time away from the field in the last 3 years.

The guy is still very young. He'd still have another year of college eligibility left if he had stayed. I guess I've got a soft spot for him being from my state, but he does have the talent. I think his health is going to be the difference in whether he becomes worth your investment.

Hopefully, Shanahan takes runs up the middle out of the playbook. Yup, I'm excited about Lance's talent. I had been wanting the Niners to draft him for a year or two before that draft. I didn't think they'd have a chance of drafting him, but then Jimmy got hurt two seasons ago and the Niners were able to use the draft capital to trade up.

The funny thing is with all the talk of Mac Jones to the 9ers a couple of years ago they basically got a similar version of him in Brock Purdy.

I still think Purdy ultimately lands as a high quality backup fringe starter when it's all said and done but I'd love to eat one healthy plate of crow on that one.

There's two ways you could eat crow on that (he could be a total bust too, although that's looking less likely). I tend to agree with his ultimate role in the league, a replacement level starter, or top level backup.

Gonna be interesting to see if Purdy can continue to play at a Jimmy-type level when he plays against Washington's top 10 defense. I think there is still plenty of crow for every one to eat no matter how this game turns out.

always flips me out when fans know what a guy is after such a small sample size.

Hell, Purdy could be Joe Montana for all I know.

I hope he continues. I am enjoying claiming how he is gonna Tom brady all these other QBs on the team :becky:

By being Mr. Irrelevant, it's impossible for him to be a bust. That's what's so beautiful about this whole thing. Anything the Niners get out of him is a blessing. I'll be thrilled if he is a top level backup. It's a tough road, but teams have won a title with a QB who is a replacement level starter/top level backup.

That's absolutely correct. The QB centric model doesn't seem to work well once a QB is established and highly paid and eating up a big chunk of the cap. Maybe having a good enough QB and great players all around him especially on defense works just as well.

So far, his numbers are essentially the best of what Niner fans want out of JImmy. He's had to play 3 straight playoff-level teams and he's basically been Jimmy in each of those games. If he can do it again against another playoff level team, he's going to start winning over some of the doubters.

So far, even hard core Niner fans are seeing that he's more than Mullens was, but just how much more is he? Can he continue to play at a JImmy-level? Few realistic fans expect him to be a truly great QB, but the issue is whether he can play at or above a Jimmy level. He's gonna have a bad game or 2, but so did Jimmy. And that is the point. If Jimmy is the expected level of play, then Purdy has to like his chances in teh future. It's still too early to tell how he will turn out, but Niner fans have every reason to both doubt and be optimistic about him...

Jimmy's gone next year. I think that without a doubt.
My question will be. If he gets the Niners deep enough into the playoffs, will the powers that be allow him to Tom Brady, Lance (who they spent a lot of draft capital on)

I'd be optimistic, it many times comes down to the decisions made & not made. Purdy seems very coachable thus far.

also...great situation for the kid

Oh Jimmy is definitely gone next year imo. So, I agree on that. As for whether he can result in Lance being on the bench...if Purdy plays well enough for the Niners to even get to the NFCCG (again, a Jimmy-level of play), I think he should be the starter next year. At the worst, he'd be in a "QB Competition" with a Lance. He's basically auditioning for the starting job and so far, he is killing it.

I am also optimistic that Purdy can be a Jimmy level player or a little better, as Purdy is more mobile and so far, isn't prone to the big mistake that Jimmy was (but it's still a VERY small sample size). Lance was supposed to be that "tractor" level player that "pulls" a team into success, but Jimmy wasn't that type of player and Purdy doesn't have to be that level of player either for the team to be successful at a high level.

No doubt, he's in a great situation. PB level players at LT, RB, WR, and TE. And a great defense. Can't ask for a better situation for a young QB.

If Purdy earns the job next year you think Lance is tradeable?
