First half thoughts. the first goal might have sealed our fate but the second one likely did for sure.

Ream horrid passing in first half.

We can’t keep running out strikers that are invisible and especially against an elite defensive team. Ferreira just a wasted spot so far And I wouldn’t expect Wright to do better. Just shake up your alignment and get your impact players out there If you must. I blame Berhalter for this. You know coming in you can’t beat the top teams like this. give your team a shot at least.

Our transition and set pieces are just so lacking compared to these top teams. have we had a dangerous corner in this tournament even though we have dominated the numbers of corners taken? Other teams seem to put every corner in a dangerous spot. Pulisic has been poor on corner placement not just in this tournament but over the last couple years as well.

our only chance was to use our speed And hope for a couple of chances Because We just can’t break them down in the attacking zone. There is no movement the way we saw on both of the Dutch goals. It’s like we run into the corner and blindly attempt a cross. No attempt to create separation off the ball and nothing from our striker again and we can’t lose track of our man and expect to win

Finally Berhalter does what he should have been doing on and off this whole tourney. You can’t play guys like Ferreira or Wright and expect to beat good teams Even if it means playing guys a little out of position or changing up to little of an unorthodox formation

180 wasted minutes of useless strikers.
Only when losing does he try Aaronson with Reyna, but they've had no time on the field together to build anything.

Wasted opportunity.

Yeah, they played a very good team trying to win and the USMNT lost. Zimmerman is garbage, but so are a bunch of their players. They got to where they should have. Until they start getting some players the caliber of Van Dijk, Gakpo, Depay, De Jong, etc, they will continue to be short of contenders. I doubt the USA ever gets more than 1 or 2 top of the line top flight players though. Dempsey is the closest we have ever come to that. Pulisic might at some point. Our best athletes go into other sports and the prime competition to sharpen skills as players grow up is an ocean away.

2nd goal right before the break was a huge, cannot give that up so close to break.

Ferreira definitely a wasted spot... USA looked better bringing on Reyna and Aaronson.

In first half commentators here remarked Dutch marking Adams, McKinnie and Musah coming up field... forcing someone else to move USA up field trying to create turnovers.

I think Robinson has improved a lot and think he has room for improvement... but I think he had very poor game.

Don’t know if this has been discussed…

But is this really the best that the US has to offer?

I know soccer ain’t a top sport in this country, but how in the heck with so much here , is this the best we have?

We have a big contingency of Latino/Hispanic here in NY, not one player on this team from any part of those countries who now reside here?

Wow! Just wow!

SAVED all 3 PKs (well the post did on one but he had it covered)

2nd and 3rd Spanish penalty shots were soft and placement not the best, those were not difficult saves when goalie guessed correctly.

Bounou was doing some talking on video it appears... wonder if he got in the heads of the 2nd and 3rd penalty kickers for Spain.

Spain just looked so out of sorts that entire round. They expected to win during regular time and it showed during those terrible PKs

Today the first quarterfinal games

Brazil v Croatia
Argentina v Netherlands
And this is why soccer is stupid. Croatia knew they had no shot to beat Brazil by scoring more goals. So they played for a 0-0 tie to take a chance with penalty shots (much less disparity there) and it worked.

I'm glad Brazil is out because it's wide open now, but no sport has that feature where the massive underdog can win by playing for a tie.

While I understand your point, and it makes for a boring sport for normies, It's really no different from classic defensive football teams like the Ravens, that ran on every play to run out the clock and often a field goal was enough to win the games.

Brazil still scored and Croatia were good enough to get their tying goal.

But even then they don't win by playing to a 0-0 tie and then kicking more field goals than the other team. And they don't win 3-0 either. A low scoring game can be fun. A no scoring game is not.

Good point, it wasn't 0-0. Like I said, I'm glad Croatia knocked them out.

I get your point but it applies to Morocco vs Spain more. Croatia weren't massive underdogs, they were the runner-ups last WC, and they play a very disciplined tactical scheme. Yes, it's a defensive scheme which can be boring, trying to do damage in counters.
