Scream (Instant, spoiler-free review)

This movie, like the others, makes fun of the genre and does it fairly well. It totally plays off of the soft reboot concepts and makes fun of those as well. There is an insane amount of fanfare in here for the original Scream lovers and it makes the movie pretty fun. With that said, there are some absurd scenes that just aren't based in reality. I thought it was pretty predictable and had it figured out probably 30-45 minutes in. The story/plot is different, yet original for Scream annnnd as of right now (first viewing) I think it works pretty well. The acting is ok, some spotty moments in my opinion. Spoiler-free is more difficult for me lol, I want to get into it and break it down, but I know most haven't seen it and I don't want to tempt with spoiler tags.

It's a lot of fun, mostly well done, but some scenes and character decisions are unforgivable and dropped it for me. I would still recommend it, but I am only going to give it 6/10. I will have to watch Scream 4 again to know how good it is, but it is definitely better than 3.

Ton of fun lol. Caught myself grinning multiple times throughout.

Tried to watch Archive 81 on Netflix.
Didn't make it past the 2nd epsiode.

Did watch the entire 1st season of Yellowjackets.
Highly recommend.
While there isn't exactly gore every episode, there is absolutely a horror element to this show.
Intrigued to see where they take it in Season 2.

I just finished this yesterday. I did not care for it. The acting was shoddy, the story feels like 2 or 3 different stories wrapped into one. It's a mess and there is no real payoff. Character dialogue and decisions are strange, unrealistic (imo) which is a reflection on the writing. It felt like a movie that was trying to be original, but thought that being original was just taking a bunch of elements that have already been established. Again, nothing really makes sense and nothing is really explained too much... 4/10 and I think I am being generous. There is some nice camera work and some solid production, but that's about it.

A coworker told me he is watching it too, I advised him to stop and just start watching Midnight Mass lol.

Re-watched Fright Night 2 (1988)-

So after the events of the original Fright Night (1985) (Note: not the sonewhat iffy 2011 remake), Charlie is at college and convinced that the events of the original movie were a mass delusion. But that view begins to change after a group of "performance artists" move into a nearby mansion. Things escalate as people start dying, and Charlie's friend Peter Vincent- (the always fun Roddy McDowall) and his new girlfriend fight to survive the onslaught.

This is actually a pretty decent sequel, but it isn't without it's faults.

The good-
*William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowall reprising their characters.
*The vampire group is interesting and fun for the most part. They aren't quite to the level of Jerry Dandridge but they have their moments.
*Great fxs! Lots of cool creatures and gore, much like the original. I can't emphasize this enough: lots of fun here!
*The soundtrack/score, often derived from the original movie, are goid and do provide a bit of cohesion betwwen the two.

The bad-
*My biggest issue with the movie is that it doesn't do great as a stand-alone. If you go into it not having watched the original (if so, WrF is wrong with you?? Go watch it!) then some of the characters, their interactions, and the story itself are not clear and defined. Combine that with a story that sometimes feels a little rushed and it can feel a bit rocky.
*Not "bad" persay but the supporting actors overall are not as strong as in the original. The vampire group is interesting and fun but they don't always impose a sense of dread to counter the comedy of the first film. The girlfriend character lacks the personality of the original gf.
I mostly feel the actors are ok to good, so maybe the direction/sxript/editing, etc are more to blame.
*The flow of the story can sometimes feel a bit rushed.

A solid 6 to 6.5 outta 10 range for me. I give the original Fright Night about a 7.5.

This was directed by Tommy Lee Wallace who did a bunch of work with the early John Carpenter. He also directed Halloween 3 before mostly moving away from horror.

Note that the director of the original Fright Night, Tom Holland (writer of Child's Play and the highly underrated Psycho 2) has gotten the rights to the story back and is doing a direct sequel to the original Fright Night. At first he was going to include this movie (Fright Night 2) in that lore but has now decided to bring back Jerry Dandridge and Evil Ed instead.

I seem to remember the chick vampire in FN2 being hot, but that may not be true.

Oh no. I watched Ep 1 last night and liked it, hoping it would develop. Gonna push through another episode to see what the let down is like.

I red boxed Antlers and Last Night at Soho last night. So far only watched Antlers and I was not impressed. The movie glanced over the lore of the creature and focused more on the kid and the teacher than anything else, the lore gets literally about 2 minutes. There is a bit of troubling backstory introduced that is never fleshed out or discussed, it is presented and never addressed again which makes it seem completely needless and out of place. The only reason it is there is to have a character motivation/relatability to the kid, as if a simply caring teacher wouldn't be enough. This is a mess of a movie that doesn't seem to care about story. The creature is neat, but without more lore, it just feels random. There are some nice shots and I like the cinematography, but that is kind of where this stops. Happy I didn't pay theaters prices to see this.

4/10

Spoilers below.

Last Night at Soho... not sure what the hype is all about. I found nothing impressive about it. Not that it was necessarily bad, but more blah. I have been avoiding learning too much about movies anymore as I just want to let the movie surprise me. So for a long while in this, I thought it was going to be some interesting expose on mental illness, similar to Take Shelter (which I liked) as it was hinted at in the beginning and nothing was really making sense.... but no, not really. The movie is very abrupt which hurts it in my opinion as it doesn't feel well written. The visions just start suddenly and the reason why/how they started is unexplained and remains that way through the whole film. The love interest doesn't feel very genuine in my opinion, it seems just as abrupt as the visions.

4.5/10.

She had a weird kinda hot goth-vamp thing going. The role was overtly sexual, (not quite to the level of The Hunger with David Bowie, Catherine Devenue back in the '80s) but it did require someone who could make the boys pay attention!

As we all know, the vampire mythos is steeped in sex, and remember that the original Fright Night followed that classic troupe with suave vampire Jerry Dandridge going after the still in high school Marcy Darcy.

We should do a hottest female vamp in movies vote. Some great contenders in there but Salma Hayek is already the winner!tenor-1.gif
