We need a Tyler LF more than we need a Marco as a #3 SP so I call it a fail, but not a Varitek/Lowe fail by any means. Thebad part is Tyler became the exact player we all hoped he would which cannot be said with the Varitek/Lowe deal.
lets...look..at the mariners rotation..........the mariners like..a dodgers stye...rotation...with a LHp...at the top....
cy young winner...strike out king...robbie..ray..fits...soooo nice...

Robbie Ray 38...L/L
Chris Flexen 77.....mets cast off..cris flexen....goes to korea...gets a makeover...and comes back with the mariners....and was there best pitcher..last year...goes..361 era..in 179.2 inn..that..is way good...125 strike outs...1.25 whip...that is good...went 14...and 9..felix..at his best...a diff style though..

if he can pitch....better than 20 20...at around a 4.00...then the mariners..can work with that....but...they..still have shefield and williamson...LHpers......
then...they still have dunn....at #6...Justin Dunn 35....3.75...in 50 innings....that is good folks..

now after giving margo...a chance...and williamson a chance...and sheffield a chance....if they still need...a LHstarter....the deadline or sooner..
jedi...will prob go get one............

or sooner....if he thinks he knows better..............but we dont.....yet..........

so...that...and maybe some re-work..the bench..or whatever..i can..see maybe..getting..a cbb..pick...2 would be better...for sure...

We've probably already discussed this at length if the trade was right in hindsight, but I think we all knew what that this was the player Tyler O'Neill would end up becoming. Honestly I'm surprised it took him this long to earn substantial playing time.

The only thing that saved this trade from being an absolute disaster is that Marco surpassed most of the expectations we had of him and the fact that we currently have a lot of depth in the organization at OF - albeit most of it is "potential". When we made the trade I honestly saw Marco as a soft tossing leftie with injury issues and a lack of production at the MLB level.

I'm sure you guys will disagree with this, but I'd consider the Marco trade to be even in terms of considerations going into 2022. The reason for that is because of the current state of the team. Marco has been a reliable starter and is on an incredibly friendly contract. If the Mariners didn't have Kelenic, Julio, Haniger, Lewis, etc. I would probably feel differently. I should probably add a disclaimer saying there are a ton of strong arguments against this perspective that I'm sure ya'll will probably point out, to the extent that I think it might actually be a bit of a stretch to say it ended up working out for both teams.
I thought I was by myself but I agree with you completely. I think what O'Neil showed last year isnt sustainable. If he's a 5+ WAR and 145 WRC+ guy going forward then fine, ill admit im wrong but I dont see that sustaining. Especially given he still strikes out a lot. He just was never gonna work in Seattle with what Dipoto is trying to sell and the players he is bringing in.

We can also say Marco is only a #3 starter but I don't think that's the extent of what he has brought to this team and what he has meant to it. He's essentially hopefully one of the first pieces that produces a turn around for the franchise. He had a very bad first half of the year but rebounded well down the stretch.

I still have no issues with that trade,

I will disagree and hear me out. The Varitek/Lowe trade was only a fail because the Mariners didn’t win the World Series. That was the intention of the deal because they had Dan Wilson, obviously hindsight it sucked but I still do not get the logic for trading for Marco. Dislike the Varitek trade but at least you can rationalize it IMO.
No. Sorry I have never followed that thought process. Because we had Wilson, trading Varitek for undervalue was fine? Huh? Trading him at all never made sense to me, but him and Lowe for a reliever and not a very good one? Fail! He had a flipping 5.79 ERA with Boston when we got him.

A bad case but at least there was bad logic for the trade. We all would’ve given up JRod and Kirby last deadline if the Mariners had a chance at the WS, which the Mariners had in 97 if they could get just average pitching.

if we truly believed the team was a piece away sure. But I am not trading Jrod for guys like Merrifield (rumored) or Reynolds. I dont think Kirby or Hancock was worth Berrios either. Even if they had Berrios and another bat, they dont catch Houston and still might not make the WC game.

anytime you trade assets for a reliever, its incredibly risky. Main reason on the other side of the coin, I never hated the Graveman trade. Optics and timing may have been awkward but now we have Toro when we were likely letting Graveman walk anyway.

my dad....was worked...in a baseball...card shop...after he re-tired...so...i have...had...a lot....and..now almost nothing.. but...i think i will.
get me some....
mariners rookie cards.............lol..

i suggest......dealers of baseball cards...start..dumping.....

why.....back in the 70...everyone put them one there..bicycle..wheel...spoke to make a noise...and they where..thrown around...and no one cared..
untill beckett...came out....a lot where thrown out by then.....early 90s....and baseball..cards..where back..in style...

and the older ones...of coarse...where worth more...after that..soooo maney..baseball cards....hit the market...it made them...wothless...again..

dealers.......ya gota...dump...a lot of baseball cards.....to protect...the value....of the good ones.......and to make them hold there value..

im prob talking to the wall.....ohhh well.............

I’m not advocating trading any one just saying as a fan if the Mariners were able to win the World Series because they traded JRod I think it would be worth. I and not trying to defend the Slocumb trade either, I think it was bad logic but at least there is some. I don’t see any logic in trading your top position prospect for a former top pitching prospect coming off of an injury who was expendable. Marco wasn’t going to help them make the playoffs nor is he ever going to be the work horse that gets you into the playoffs. O’Neill isn’t going to become Trout by any means but Jerry should’ve gotten Marco for less than his number 2 prospect.
