You can't fault the D for the 7 following Gibson's fumble. Herbert passed all over them but I think a lot of people are going to do that. I would say the D got lucky on the "touchback fumble." Bad call.

The thing I heard that bothered me most was that the coaching staff was trying to fit Fitz into Turner's offense instead of trying to work offense around him. Shades of Jay Gruden. The protection from the Oline was disappointing. We will have to wait and see if that was a one game thing or not. They might be better with TH back there based on his ability to escape. I'd love to see Heinicke excel but I don't expect it.

The team should be 1-1 after Thursday's game. Except for QB I do not think we are in "the sky is falling" .... yet.

Hump outperformed Brown. Neither was anything to write home about.

Well said! What I felt like I watched earlier today was the same movie we trotted on the field week after week last year with a few different actors. I know, one game is a small sample but I've got a feeling this same movie will be shown a lot again this year.

Agree ... I had the same feeling. I think we will compete in a lot of game because of the D but the team will be offensively challenged again.

It is really early, lets see what adjustments the coaches make. The Chargers went through the D easily on that first drive but clearly adjustments were made following that. The D's red zone defense (zone) was good and they stopped the run down there for the most part.

I really enjoy listening to DeAngello Hall's commentary after every play on the WTF radio network so I listen to that while I watch the game with the tv sound off. All game long today he kept saying our defensive secondary was giving Herbert anything he wanted with their stock of playmakers by playing their receivers way too soft with very little tight coverage. He said we've got to fix that quickly or we will make all opposing QBs look like pro bowl material. He complimented our run defense a lot.

I like DHall too. He is informative. JDR is still playing a lot of zone, hence the bend but don't break. Herbert is talented. There were plays when the coverage wasn't too bad but Herbert threw the ball where only the receiver could make the catch. Jackson and Curl had moments. Fuller and St. Juste not so much.

I thought the Dline got gashed on that first series. They ran right at Young and Allen but they played it much better after that. JMO but for now anyhow I like Chase at LDE and Sweat on the right side. I still think Ioannidis is the best DT.

I think I heard RR say the D was out of position a number of times.

They played soft and also didnt blitz. It was weird, especially after the front four didnt get home with regularity in the first half.

I know Hebert excelled when blitzed last year, but I am not sure why Del Rio didnt overwhelm a side and roll coverage at all.

Seemed like the obvious move to me, given the new oline the chargers were sporting.

I forget who caught the ball on one play but folks on the forum said "who was covering that guy?" They ran an overload blitz on that play and Herbert saw it all the way.

You have to give credit to the Chargers too. That last TD was easy to see what was coming when they stacked 4 guys on the right and isolated St. Juste on the left. Welcome to the NFL rookie.

I would also like to see a little more aggressiveness with the blitz. The D bowed up in the red zone. Lets see how they do Thursday

I agree, Herbert is talented. When I watched him play college football he didn't look like anything special to me which explains why I am not an NFL talent scout. If Herbert can stay healthy he might have a chance to challenge some of Phillip Rivers Chargers records one of these days as a QB.

They actually kept us in the game until the last drive, that was absolutely awful. After the Hopkins missed Fg LAC was driving then we get a pick by Jackson, Next play, Gibson fumbles inside the 5. Cant expect the d to stop them there. When you fumble and miss Fg's in a close game you wont win.
When a defense only gives up 20 points while surrendering 27 first downs, allows 14/19 on 3rd dn conversions and over 36 minutes of possession. Somewhere along the line they either came up with some big plays and/or they got lucky. The Skins defense did both today. IMO that was a bad call on the Herbert fumble. Not that it made much difference as Gibson gave the ball right back.

Thed worst uni of the day today though was the coaching.

Fitz was done when he signed here, Allen and Hieney aren't much either. I've been saying it all off-season... This team is a QB away and they don't have one!
Sigh., you did call it. Scott Turner didn't give him much help either with his playcalling..
