Interesting thread. I’m a bit confused. Let’s say a 180-pound QB will not cut it in today’s NFL. Ok. Now how do we teletransport an intact HOF QB from the past and toss him into a football game 60 years later to prove it? Does Scotty beam him into the future? Trying to figure that one out.

Slingin' Sammy Baugh was a great athlete back in the 30;s, he played both ways and right now today could punt, great punter. He was 182 pounds of hard muscle. In his day he was a great QB, the best in the game, actually the best we had ever seen.

Now it gets a bit funky.....

If a time machine came down grabbed Slingin' Sammy in 1935 and dropped him off in Dallas 2021 could he play the 2021 season?

Not about if Baugh had been born in 2000 and had all the advantages these guys have today could he play knowing he won;t weigh 182 anymore. Actually somebody different than the 1935 version.

There is no way the 1935 version could play today.

Hard to compare across eras, give the greats their dues.

I totally agree about giving the past greats their props.

Disagree about it's hard to compare era's.

Athletes are constantly getting bigger, stronger, faster, college teams today could beat NFL teams from back in the day, high school teams beating once upon a time college teams. We continue to improve, to up the bar, to go places unheard of not so long ago. The NFL players today a totally different beast than we saw back in the day, and it really is pretty obvious.

But....when ya talk the greats you always go with dominance of era, not could they play today.

I have nothing official about the actual speed of Jim Brown, but it is pretty much accepted (for some reason?) 9.8 for a 100 yards a time John Riggins ran winning Kansas as a HSer pretty sure he was lighter then.

I can see a 9.8ish for Brown, that looks about right. Funny thing is the dude next to him Bobby Mitchell was a 9.6.

Histories fastest 1000 yard rusher was Texas A&M/Colts Curtis Dickey he was world ranked, a 9.2/10.10 guy, Big muscled up cat who stuttered.
Riggins was a two time high school champ in the 100 yard dash. For as fast as he was in high school and he still had some wheels in the pros. He only had a handful of plays of 50+ yards in 14 years as an NFL RB.

I just read that Bob Hayes ran a 9.1 in 1963, a record that stood till Ivory Crockett ran a 9.0 in 1974. I also read Hayes was hand timed running between an 8.5 n 8.9 as the last leg of the 64 Olympic 4x100 meter relay team among other impressive stuff.

Yep, twice 100champ and also won the long jump, over 22 feet. I have seen a video of one of those state wins, he was totally ripped and a lot lighter. He played at around 230ish, probably 190ish as a HS sprinter.

Hayes ran 9.1 numerous times, but he was never more impressive than that 10,06 Olympic win on a sloppy Tokyo dirt track, lane one actually.

Trenton Jackson and Mel Pender were our other 100m cats but both got hurt so there went the 4x1 relay, no not really enter our 200m dudes Richard Stebbins and Paul Drayton, yep, this foursome had never trained as a 4x1 team, and tha is why Bullet Bob was so far behind. And while that leg is legendary as you mentioned, neither Canada with Harry Jerome or Cuba with Enrique Figuerola were in the 4x1, actually.....no sprinter who anchored the 4x1 ran in that 100m final but Hayes.

Ivory Crockett was a good sprinter and when he ran that 9.0 he beat Reggie Jones in Tennessee, a feat in it;s self. High school kid Houston McTesr would tie that 9.0, and yes it is still the world record because nobody runs 100 yards anymore.

He was histories first 5.9 60 man, so from 60 to 200 he would run a WR what....12 times?

Histories first sub10,00 with a 9,91 but, windy so.....

That Tokyo Olympic 4x1 would be the last time we saw a white sprinter on a USA Olympic 4x1, this was Dartmouth's Gerry Ashworth, yep, an Ivy Leagurer.

If Hayes had stayed in track (no $$$$) until 1968 he is running a 9.85 UP there in Mexico City and beats Hines, He would have been 26.

Who was that small college QB who was converted to a RB once in the NFL and he responded with over a 1000 yards rushing his rookie season?

Come on people you can do this.

It's totally stupid to compare different eras.

Cap vs No Cap
Free Agency vs Stuck on one team for life
No touching of WR vs Beating the shit out of them at the line of scrimmage
Hands off QBs vs Hits from the ankles to the forehead

Most of you were not around to watch football in the 1950s. Players had regular jobs and went to practice from 6 pm to 10 pm every night. Prior to the 1950s they had to have jobs that allowed them to take a train to games on Friday and be late for work on Monday. Of course making that extra $5000 a year plus the bonus if you won a championship made things a bit easier. It was the age of smelling salts and taking 10-20 aspirin to let you play with a broken arm in the second half.

Steve Young's best passer rating (112.8) is 14th all-time. 11 of the 13 seasons ahead of him have come in the last decade alone.. the other two were in 2004 (Manning) and 2007 (Brady). The league passer rating was 78.4 in 1994, it was up to 93.6 in 2020. The last time a 93.6 passer rating would have been the best in the NFL was in 1986 (Tommy Kramer had a 92.6 rating).

Let make this clear, everyboby born in the 20;s, 30.s etc would be biggr,

Having fun and having a condescending attitude are two totally different things and you fall on the latter side. Maybe you should get that ego checked at the door cause trying to chest thump about Chris Carson makes you look petty since I knew what it would take to bring him back to the team.

Well since you weren't going to......good call on Carson, yep, you were right......hey!!!!

Stop battling it dude, old cat here seen a TON of football, ok? Embrace it man, learn something.
[/QUOTE]

Don't ever tell me to learn something jackass. My 7 and 10 yr kids are way more mature than your 80yr old ass. So sit down till I call on you to speak.

He's just a troll. Every one of his points has been directly and persuasively rebutted more that once in this thread. He simply ignores the replies and starts talking about something unrelated. Rinse repeat.

Oh, and I'm not seeing a 180 pound QB lasting long even in today's NFL. Hell, I'm not if many of today's QBs could handle the game the way it was played back in the 70s n 80s.

Then maybe you can tell me why his 182 lb weight alone would cause Sammy Baugh to fail at QB today. The other guy doesn't seem inclined to explain and I got tired of him moving the goalposts every time I asked.

Keep in mind that he was 6'2" and this wasn't just any 182 lb man. He was 182 lbs of barbed wire and the best athlete in the game by far, at the time, who was a star on defense as well and still holds the record for average yards per punt in a season.

Explain why him weighing 182 lbs causes him to fail at QB today.
